      1. does it have very large/deep indentations that allow you to wrap the steering wheel at 9 & 3? If not then yes it's poorly designed
      2. the square portion is never an issue if the steering goes to full lock without crossing your arms. If the ford gt requires you to cross your arms then yes it's a poor design.

      Every modern Chevy car I’ve driven has had an awful interior design from a human factors standpoint. The Chevy Cruze has the same wheel design that you are describing. It’s horrendous and impossible to manage.
      We don’t even have to get into the interior buttons which have all be “re-imagined” by Chevy to be in the worst positions and the logos of standard operating gear are sometimes redesigned.
      Be like Toyota. They have had the cruise control stalk for over 30 years because it works and you don’t have to change it. And if I get into another Toyota I can always actuate cruise control because it’s always the same. I can always actuate the wipers and the headlights. It’s all consistent. Lots of companies are trying to push the design boundaries by re-designing the human-machine interface and it doesn’t work.

      @CaseyPutsch  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not in a street car. ESPECIALLY in a steering rack ratio where there are numerous turns lock to lock. That is a race car thing only for rack ratios where you don't have to take your hands off 9/3 positions. It is bad in a street car. Period.

    What you talk about in the video makes 100% sense. The problem with this video is that most individuals who get luxury/expensive cars don't get them to race or track them, they get them as status symbols for their wealth. The average person doesn't care about the ergonomics of the steering wheel, engineering of the car, etc. Most people purchase nice cars to either show it off or want to put their foot on the throttle and go fast from time to time. The engineers and designers making these cars know 100% what there doing, they don't appeal to the minority of people like you who are super interested in the entirety of how the car works and performs, but to appeal to the majority that want style , tech and features.

Most try to do both a little, but really cater mostly to one camp, usually as a result of risk tolerance and pefrence of the owner. In this case the owner is a soulless comglomerate, run by boomers assisted by a "artsy types" who they tolerate in the design building, with low risk tolerance on an already low margin product.

    part of it, imo, is the simple fact 99% of drivers have no clue how to properly drive. Not saying I do either but at least I hold the wheel as proper as I can, don't text or use my phone, eat, drink, drive with tunnel vision, left lane hog, etc. But these companies are designing these vehicles for your casual driver. The guy just hops in his car and drives as a tool. A boring task they need to deal with to get from point A to B. Not driving because it's enjoyable. Same reason the manual is dying imo.
    Whats funny is I've hated most steering wheels I've had in my cars but couldn't figure out quite why that was. Simple stupid, yes, most cars have several electronics attached now so there's that bulking piece of plastic at 3 & 9....

    Casey, just found your videos this morning I really enjoy them. I agree with you about the C8 steering wheel especially it not being round. However I also understand why some of the design is like it is. I am a recently retired automotive engineer and spent my last 10 years working on the design and release of steering wheel switches for one of the big 3. I have an idea why the spokes and switches on the C8 steering wheel are packaged where they are and I am sure it was dictated by packaging space/feasibility and also cost.
    This steering wheel definitely does not work for sport driving or racing and that is because it was designed for the majority of the drivers that will buy a C8. Those C8 buyers will use the car as a daily pleasure vehicle and will never do any sport driving or racing in the car. Based on your comment about making your own C8 steering wheel I think it would be a great idea if you could start a company to make race inspired and designed aftermarket replacement steering wheels for current vehicles that would be compatible with the vehicle’s OEM electrical architecture and airbag.
    As for why the C8 wheel is not round you need to watch the TH-cam video "2020 Corvette Chief Engineer Talks C8 Stingray - Autoline After Hours 489" as the C8 Executive Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter talks about the car. In the video Tadge addresses the C8 steering wheel design and he also addresses why the C8 has no manual transmission. The steering wheel discussion starts at time is (21:20) and the transmission is discussion is at time (48:35).

    Question: do you really get that "tactile feeling" on an electronic steering wheel in modern sports car ? (I haven't driven one so idk) In a bit older stuff you have hydraulics so you do absolutely feel everything, but on electric ones I doubt simulation is that precise, so that's why they can get away with worse designs maybe ? (Correct me someone if I'm wrong)

    • @cg8212
      @cg8212 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Speaking from my current ride (2016 Mustang GT) that has electric steering, it's not as clear as the old hydro days but there is communication in the wheel. Depending on how they tune it, at minimum you'll get tire load. Better systems will give road undulations, but the road surface type will rarely get to you. If you've driven 90s German sports cars or any motorcycle, you'll know what I'm on about. Closest analogy I can give is listening to the exhaust of a N/A V8 and a turbo V8. Both have a nice burble at idle and cruising speed, and you won't notice most days. When you lay into the throttle, however, there's a fine musical quality that is missing from the turbo V8. A muted turbo rasp that on the N/A exhaust would be wailing off walls, loudness volumes being equal.
      I'm not a fan of Ford's or Mercedes's implementation (even with their driving modes set to sportiest). Modern Porsche and GM are reported to be the leaders in electric feedback, but I can't confirm.

Had you actually owned or driven a C7 with the round steering wheel you would completely understand why Chevy went into this direction. People with thick thighs find it difficult to get in and out of the C7. The flat button steering wheel solved this. The C8 top is for max driver vision. I think your issue is false and very contrived. You didn't sit on any C8 design Engineering team or design this car. Stop the foolishness...

    Today the C8 should be classed as a very capable sportscar. 20 years ago it absolutely would have been a full on supercar. I do think you're probably overreacting to the wheel though, it can't possibly have got through all the development and testing and ended up being as you seem to put it, unusable. I haven't touched a C8 steering wheel myself but logically it can't be as much of a disaster as you think.
