My method is to overfill a bit the chip/scratch, let it dry 24h, then wet paper sand it (2000) to level it and finally polish the area to get back the brightness of the varnish

I never got on with dr colorchip's thinning stuff but globbing it on and then going over it with a polisher worked well.
