Ion thrusters work by creating ions (charged particles) from a gas, like xenon. These ions are then accelerated by an electric field and shot out of the engine at high speed. As the ions are pushed out, the spacecraft gets pushed in the opposite direction, similar to how a balloon moves when air escapes from it. Even though space has no air, ion thrusters don’t need air to work-they use electricity to move the ions. This allows the spacecraft to slowly but steadily move forward.
