    Thank you! I have watched several "openwrt on proxmox" videos, but none care to explain the networking aspect of openwrt in a virtual environment. This one does!
    Please publish a similar vlog with OpenWRT running in a container, explaining the meaning of each option of the CLI commands you use to create the container. Thanks so much 🙏

    We're currently using OpenWRT VM in Proxmox as the router for our medium sized LAN party, lanmine! Thank you very much for this clear and concise tutorial

      That is really cool! I'm happy the video helped! I searched the name, and I found a LAN in Fredrikstad. Is that the one?
      If you have any quick tips for hosting LAN's, it would be much appreciated! I have helped set up BitLAN, which starts today.

      @@Divgitally The most important thing is to have fun, even if you're busy as crew. My biggest tech tip must be LANcache. Lifesaver when you "only" have 1Gbps uplink but got to serve about 200 people.

    I am trying to get openmptcprouter running, based on openwrt, so a lot of guides link to openwrt. The installation works fine, but I can't connect to the web admin page. My network already has a dhcp server setup, and the linux bridge I am using is the same connection for proxmox web management, so I don't know how it can distinguish proxmox's ip and the VM router's ip.

    Thanks for publishing this guide. It worked great for me on 7.3.x. Do you have any advice about the number of physical ethernet devices that are needed for a secure openwrt install? Best practices? Thanks.

      Personally I actively use 2 with a backup interface for Proxmox in case my router on it fails.
      I do not host any services like web or mail, but if i were to do that I would use 3. 1 for WAN, 1 for LAN and 1 for DMZ which I would host my servers on.
      This separates your services you wish to host from your devices minimizing the risk of all your devices falling victim of hacking in one go.
      Anything specific you are planing to do or setting up?

      Agree with the author. If your server has a spare pci-express slot, then a multi nic card (4) can be dedicated to the openwrt vm.

    Im very new to proxmox , and was hoping to host some websites in containers or vms. The proxmox host only has one network card , is it possible to use openwrt to set vlans for my website vms and have proxmox management on a separate vlan? Great videos by the way. Thanks!

    the disk import command fails, tried with both .img file and also with .gz file just to be sure but it fails saying non-existent or non-regular file while sha256 matches provided at openwrt website. rest all process is same until we get error importing the disk image. any other workaround for the same step?

      Thanks for the message. I know Proxmox is continually doing changes. I don't have anything right now sadly, but I'll try to look into it when I get the chance. Which version of Proxmox are you currently on?

      @@Divgitally yeah i can understand, i am using 8.1.3 version and i used helper script to find a new url for image, just didnt get time to test new url image yes the image is different in the helper script compared to what seems to be publicly available on their website as in your video. so will try that from my side as well once i get back the acces to my stuff. gud luck to me 🤞

      @@Divgitally yes that is another issue, i also used to be adding iso to ventoy but this current version of proxmox iso doesnt boot with ventoy. so had to format the bootable media using traditional etcher or other full format ways like usb write or rufus, balena etcher etc. currently either ventoy or proxmox someone has to fix the bootable option for ventoy to work.

      Hello! Might be a few different things. have you checked that you have the correct network bridge all the way? Also you might have to "disconnect" and then "reconnect" the interface. there is an option to set it as disconnected in the network interface in the windows VM hardware menu.

    ive got a minipc with 2 ethernet ports, and one is used to access proxmox, so i cannot use it in the openwrt vm?

    • @Divgitally
      @Divgitally  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sure you can! What I would do is to have the same interface you access Proxmox with as WAN for openwrt, then you can easily add Proxmox to the LAN side when you have gotten the router up and running.

  • @avillp

    I only have one network card, so I can only create one bridge. Should I just add the same bridge twice to the VM?

    • @Divgitally
      @Divgitally  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is one way of doing it, but then you need to have another router like your ISP router be set as the gateway. This approach is called router on a stick.

    • @avillp
      @avillp 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have a ONT already to turn fiber optics into ethernet. I added the second bridge with VLAN tag 6 and it worked!
      I am wondering, you mention that’s one way. Which other ways is there to accomplish this with just one network card?

    • @Divgitally
      @Divgitally  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @avillp if you want to use a virtual router, but only have one network interface, it is able to just have the ISP router be the gateway to route traffic to the web by disabling the DHCP server there, then setting that up on your virtual router

      Hello. I have seen something about changing the size of the drive, but I am unable to find it right now. It is simple to do in Proxmox, but quite a few commands to run in openwrt.
      When it comes to wifi, I need to know more about your setup before I can say anything.

      I currently do not have access to my lab with OpenWrt to try this myself now but:
      First increase the size of it in Proxmox. Once you have restarted, SSH in or open a console window. Then you can take a look at this link: teklager.se/en/knowledge-base/openwrt-installation-instructions/
      A ways down they install and use parted. This was the one I found with the least steps and most straight forward.
      Yell out if you run into issues and I will look further into it when I get access to my lab.

    I don't understand why so many things need to be done in command line such as importing a disk on proxmox. On virtualbox you can pretty much rely on GUI solely.

      Two different products, two different approaches.
      VirtualBox targets desktop users.
      Proxmox VE targets server admins who are adept at scripting and automation.
