Hey Dave, thanks for doing this work. I’m a 64 year old Fire Protection Engineer who worked in the nuclear field. In March of 2019 I had hernia surgery and that caused me to be placed in a medically induced coma. That coma damaged my memory.
I find that watching your videos helps to kick in my long term memories. I wanted to say, thanks for your help.
    Regards,
    Paul

Adam-12 is still one of the most realistic cop shows. My 20 years as a police officer saw many similarities of the day to day life on patrol.

Adam-12 ( along with “Dragnet” ) helped inspire me to choose a career in law enforcement ( 1974-2008 ). Looking back now, on many of those episodes, with Reed and Malloy, I, too, can easily relate to some of the calls they responded to and the situations ( and persons ) they encountered while on patrol 👮‍♀️🚔🚨🇨🇱💙

    • @charlesmartel5907
      @charlesmartel5907 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

... And family disturbance calls ( many of which were featured in episodes of “Adam-12” ) were among the least desirable. They were volatile, unpredictable, emotionally-charged, and often extremely dangerous ! No two were ever alike and you never knew what you were walking into !!! In my 34 years of police work, I don’t know of any officer ( myself included ), who liked responding to “A Family Dispute” call 👮‍♀️🚔🚨😮😡 ( but, of course, they were unavoidable ) 👮‍♀️🚔🙁 ...

Oh, man! I forgot ALL about that commercial. What I can't get over is I remember when I was fed up with all the same commercials showing over and over, at the time. Now, I watch them and just get a massive injection of nostalgia.
Adam 12 was one of my must-watch shows as it seemed to be the only drama that had wonderful humor and genuine warm chemistry with the partners. My most recurring memory was one of them desperately looking for the other, who crashed and couldn't get out of the wreck. It's one of the examples that got me so heavily in disaster assistance and rescue operations. While Scotty may have been my hero, I saw how just a little knowledge of how things work could save lives. It's also why I've spent so long volunteering as a tutor, that I do online now, to this day.
Thank you for making my day, Dave! I hope you have a wonderful one!!!

I like videos like this. I keep Adam-12 and Emergency alive in my heart through one of my stories. My sanity projects help me to cope with my not so wonderful life. Pete Malloy and Johnny Gage treat my 17-year-old character like a kid sister and tease her that the squads would be watching out for her if she every went on a date and Johnny teased they could follow her with the engine. I can see it all in my head and it makes me laugh every time I'm reading it through it to make changes. Keep up the good work.

I’ve been a police officer over 42 years. When I started, excerpts of the show were used in our training classes (which was very little except at the police academy) and the academy. We had heard that Jack Webb was adamant about making sure the shows were accurate according to LAPD policies which helped us in other departments learn new ways of doing things. My favorite show of all time. (On my TH-cam channel, TCAPDMike, I did take offs on ADAM-12 in the video “APD 1998” with different scenes in between videos about PD employees. I grew up watching Adam-12 during it's initial incarnation. A decade ago, I rediscovered it on TH-cam and Hulu, this time sharing it with my oldest daughter, who adored it. Over the years, we would sit and watch the patchwork collection of episodes that were available. Earlier this year, in anticipation of her leaving for college this Fall, I purchased the entire DVD collection. I also got the Emergency! collection. We've spent the intervening time going through both series chronologically, and are now alternating Adam-12 with Emergency! It's been a great revisit of two shows that were firmly in my zeitgeist.

Dave, I too consider myself a pop culture historian. Having said that, Kent McCord's portrayal of Captain Troy on Galactica 1980 was one of the few things I liked about that short lived series. He played the part with a serious and down to earth demeanor. Thank you for realizing that ABC did turn it into a kid's show by bringing on those super scouts. That show could have gone places if the network had stayed with the original premise of Troy and Dillon pursuing Xavier through pivotal moments in Earth's history.

Galactica 1980 was a clusterfrak from the get-go. ABC was being inundated by letters from fans asking for the show to be revived. They wanted to shut them up by bringing back a show so hamstrung they'd hate it.
Glen had already decided that if the show were to be revived, it would have to start with an event. Finding Earth would be that event. Glen couldn't pick up with his scripts he pitched the network in the spring of 79 (bringing back the Pegasus with the crew, including Cain, replaced by humanoid Cylons, Sheba dying in combat and Apollo retreating into a bottle to lick his wounds and Starbuck stepping up and being a father figure to Boxey/Troy, etc), especially since both the studio and the network slashed the show's budget in half as compared to the original series. He comissioned a script from Isaac Asimov, only parts of wich ended up in "Galactica Discovers Earth" as dictated by ABC (they didn't want to pay Asimov ongoing back-end). So a pilot was greenlit and McCord was cast as Boxey/Troy and Barry Van Dyke as Dillon (a kind of consolation prize as he was up for the role of Starbuck; the network wanted him, but Glen wanted Dirk Benedict and he won out). Setting the series in a modern-day Earth would cut production costs and give them more locations to film at ("A rock is a rock, a tree is a tree, go shoot it in Griffith Park"). So "Galactica Discivers Earth" aired as a three-part miniseries and was relatively successful. The network greenlit a weekly series, but...
They didn't want the time-travel motif. Enter the Super Scouts. Besides, the show was airing an hour ahead of the original series' timeslot, which was mandated as having to contain educational content. Glen kind of detached himself from the studio around this time, accusing them of not paying him what he was owed (a legal battle that played out right up until he passed). He wrote scripts from his condo in Hawaii, overnighted them to the mainland, and hired two writers, Allen Cole and Chris Bunch, to write educational script beats and insert them into the script. Other than that, the scripts were to go straight into mimeo unchanged and distributed to the cast.
The show was rushed during production due to the network's demands to meet airdates. The production ended up breaking the bank each episode, so it ended up costing $1M per episode in union overtime pay for the cast and crew.
      SIDEBAR:
One Sunday, Larson was on the mainland and on the Universal lot. He was wandering around and saw a Colonial Warrior walking toward him. He thought that the Battle For Galactica attraction on the studio tour was raiding the G80 wardrobe. He confronted the young man who informed Glen he wasn't part of the studio tour, they were filming the series on weekends. Glen had NO idea. That's how detached he was.
So, as the series ratings tanked, Glen decided to buck the network and give the show a shot of epinephrine as it were. He wrote "Starbuck's Great Journey" and contracted Dirk Benedict to reprise his role. (The title would be changed to "The Return of Starbuck.") Dirk was paid the equivalent of his entire original series salary for this and one other episode (more later). Kent and Barry felt put out that they weren't in the episode. They returned to work and were filming "The Day They Kidnapped Cleopatra" when the cancellation order came down. Larson was returning to time travel despite the network's mandate. The next script on the sked was "The Wheel of Fire," which would have Starbuck being revealed to have become a translated being with his own Ship of Lights.
      Sorry for writing a novel.

@@nortondumont9711 Glen pitched a stripped-down Galactica in the spring of 79. It would have jettisoned most of the recurring cast and recast Maren Jensen, whom a lot of people felt was miscast in the first place. (I was at an event held at the [San Fernando] Valley Relics Museum and talked with Morgan Brittany. [A birthday party for Johnny Whittaker, may he rest in peace.] She told me Glen wanted her for Athena, but she was committed to a feature film.)

Before cable TV became widespread across the country, it was an "event" when the networks ran "Gone with the Wind" and "The Wizard of Oz" in prime time. I remember when the Peanuts specials would run for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and the title sponsor was Dolly Madison snacks. They always looked so good, but they weren't available here in the Northeast, which was dominated by Drake's and Hostess. It was only until I became older and started to travel when I could find Dolly Madison bakery snacks!
