Well, this could definitely count as lost media found this year. After hearing Eddie Korbich (the Onceler) performing the song at If It Only Even Runs a Minute in a video uploaded on TH-cam and hearing the official demo, I’m glad to finally see footage of the song number what it looked like during the Boston tryout and it’s a shame they ultimately cut it out as this shortened version would’ve worked very well in the final version of the show without making the runtime feel TOO long as well as all the effort Lynn and Stephens put into adapting the book into song, the choreography of the assemble playing the Barbaloots, Swamy Swans and Humming Fish, the set for the Onceler’s shack, the staging of the song and the performance of Eddie Korbich himself as the Onceler and the late Alice Playten as the titular Lorax. You could tell this was going to be the stand out number of the show and it’s sad it had to go to keep the pace of the story straightforward.
I’ll admit I do like the touch of The Cat in the Hat being the customer that bought the Onceler’s first Thneed. That’s pretty clever. The number’s also completely different from how I imagined it. I always imagined a bunch of Truffula trees on the stage and during the number, them literally chopping them down. Almost like them literally destroying the scenery. You can almost picture it. 😂

"Now our trees are cut down, and our world is at war
and nobody knows what to do anymore
The thing that will save us is anyone's guess
No, nothing is going to get better... UNLESS..."

1000 times better than that heinous movie version they shoved on us in 2012. I'll never forgive the idiots for tacking on a happy ending the way they did. This version understood and respected Seuss' message as it was meant to be.

If they wanted this song to stay I think a better place for it would be when Jojo is with the soldiers and he comes across the Once-ler who tells him the story of the Lorax and that gives Jojo the courage to speak up aganist the war

You mean after Solla Sollew in Act 2, or as a scene in between Notice Me Horton and Mayzie's reprise of How Lucky You Are(imagining Jojo being momentarily displaced from General Schmitz and his platoon, due to the Whoville's fall into the clover field, and ends up in the Street of the Lifted Lorax before being found and dragged back to the military school at the end of the number) in Act 1?

A shame this scene was axed. Think the reason the team tried hard to keep the Lorax was that it teaches Jojo why it's important to think, to question and change one's mentality. If you don't, horrible mistakes could happen. Mistakes that make people villains of their stories, leaving them with nothing but deep, bitter regret. It happened to the Onceler and the tree animals. And it might happen again to the Animals of Nool and people of Who.

Oh I am so grateful for this. The original was so wonderful. I understand why this was removed, but it pains me also.

I really would like to know what the costumes for the Lorax sequence were like for this sequence. All I can make out is the Swa-Mee Birds were ballerinas and the Hummingfish were a barbershop quartet.

A handful of the costumes were used on Broadway during Circus McGurkis, Including the bar-ba-loots!

@@broadwayarchive3652 really? So the Barbaloots were repurposed as circus animals? What else was used? What did the Lorax and the Once-ler look like?

@@broadwayarchive3652Poor Barbaloots. After their original home was deforested, the owner of Circus McGurkus captured them and brought them to his circus. Well, at least they have a new home and hopefully they’re treated well.

      "Unless I ask questions..
      or plant a new tree...
or think of think being as small as can be...
The kind of a think that gets better as its unfurled.
And like a balloon it flies off to sky,
collecting new things like 'what if!' and 'let's try!'
Soon everyone's thinking of ways they can save the world.
      It's possible!
      (it's possible)(it's possible)
      Anything's possible
      It's possible!
