    As someone who turned 45 last week, i just love skincare and taking care of my skin. I have no negative feelings about aging...I enjoy learning about ingredients and sharing what I learn with others. I love helping people learn what works for their skin. Nothing is more exciting than someone coming and showing me the results my help and knowledge ( obviously I'm no professional, but I'm seriously thinking about changing that in the future ) but I love when I can help someone else feel better about their skin. I think there is something so beautiful about a person who ages naturally but takes pride in their skin and appearance. I haven't had any in office interventions done YET. I will likely cave and get botox one of these days but nothing to obvious... I guess all in all i just LOVE self care and skincare. Obviously, I do what I do to keep myself looking my best. Recent life events with my mom being sick and has brought a perspective that so little is important in life when it really comes down to it. I've learned to just do what makes me happy and not really worry about the little stuff. I love skincare because it's my happy place😊

      @@AliceintheRabbitHole thank you so much! My mom hasn't ever been into anti aging anything, but she always loved to look nice... Outfits, jewelry... She was great at taking my products and actually panning whole eye shadow palettes like nobody's business. Then overnight that all changed, literally none of those things matter. Great conversation on anti-aging and ageism, and I especially appreciated the internal vs external part. When I got into skin care a few years ago, I saw how the whole anti-aging, "gotta do anything to look younger" messages started affecting me into internalizing ageism for myself. Fortunately, my mom is a fantastic role model, as well as a couple of friends who are 1-2 decades older than me. They're too busy with their friends and activities to obsess about how they look, and I'm trying to model them!

    Anti-aging, I don't feel is a bad word, at least not to me at 54 yrs. old. "Shell shock" is now "post traumatic stress disorder". A rose by any other name.... As far as external ageism, karma is a B. They too will get old, and if they don't... they won't be around to be biased, therefore, us old people win!😂😂😂
    As a Gen Xer, who's parents had to be reminded to check on us, a commercial came on at night " It's 10pm, do you know where your children are?", I'm lucky to be here and getting older.

      Yes!! Yeah that’s something I didn’t touch on in this video, but in so many ways: we are all so fortunate to be on this planet now. We live in a time where we not only have longer lifespans, but better quality of life as well! So much so that we CAN think about how we “look older” - even just 100 years ago, I doubt people had the luxury of thinking about that! Just because we can doesn’t mean we have to though 😄

    My view on aging is unfortunately connected to death but not in the way you mentioned. My friend David lost his life when he was 24, or rather someone took it from him. I was 23 and it changed me in so many ways, including my attitude to aging. Life can be short, if I'm aging it means I'm still here and I can't complain about that. I got my first grey hairs shortly after his death, possibly caused by the trauma of it all (I didn't cope well), so he may actually be responsible for my premature aging - David had a sense of humour so he wouldn't mind me laughing at that irony! I'll be 40 this year and the grey hairs are starting to take over but when I look in the mirror I think of David and I'm perfectly okay with that.

    I think that at my age (I'm 46 years old) I make better decisions and I have learned a lot to live well with myself, I don't think I would like to go back to the age of 20 when I did so many stupid things, but it is very true that there is a stigma with older women . There is a very negative stigma in relation to the age of women and not so with men, but women also have that mentality of criticizing older women, I think we need to evolve a lot in relation to age and respect ourselves no It matters how old they are. A hug Alice and I hope you are better 😘

    • @AliceintheRabbitHole
      @AliceintheRabbitHole  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Big same. I’m perplexed by the supposed glamorized age (at least by the media, it seems). Early 20s!? I would not want to go back to that!
      Funny enough, I was reading a study that asked participants, “if you could be any age for the rest of your life, what would you choose?” I can’t recall the exact results, but I do remember how many people responded with 40s-50s! I was surprised at first, but I think it actually does make sense: that’s probably a stable time in our lives, and before the advent of age-related illness (many reported that aspect kept them from answering a higher age, although they were still overall happy at 70-80).

    • @tiahnarodriguez3809
      @tiahnarodriguez3809 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I feel the same way. I didn’t start feeling like a person till I was in my mid 20’s. At 18- young 20’s, most people make mistakes (some worse than others) as they navigate the beginning stages of adulthood, and why anyone thinks this period of life is the best is beyond me because most people I talk to, including myself, cringe when we remember our past selves 😂. With regards to women, I’ve noticed that many in their 40’s report feeling freer at this time in their lives because they’re able to focus more on themselves instead of societal duties. I’ve taken note and while it can sometimes be hard to ignore societal pressures, I do feel more at peace with myself for choosing to prioritize myself first. Not in a selfish way. Just in a way that will lead me to having less regret, but still staying true to myself, my values, and my goals.

    • @tiahnarodriguez3809
      @tiahnarodriguez3809 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AliceintheRabbitHole I’ve often heard women in their 40’s say they feel the most free and at peace they ever have because they’re able to focus more on themselves and what they want instead of what their husbands, kids, or society wants. I’ve often been told by women in this age range to focus more on myself while I’m young and accomplish my goals because marriage and kids aren’t everything. Of course this doesn’t mean don’t get married or have kids if you want to. Just recognize that we are people with our own desires and goals and it’s ok to pursue them.

I do find myself internalizing ageism from time to time, but try to remind myself that my goal is skin health, and each smile line, and crowd feet are evidence of a life well-lived. I also try to look in the mirror less 🤣. But that does have me concerned for my beautiful 15 year old daughter whose entire generation's gaze seems to be directed inward- self ageism will hit the snap chat generation hard.

    I don’t think anti-aging skincare is inherently ageist, you don’t have to fear something to want to prevent something. I look just like my grandma and I always thought she was beautiful up until she died, so I’m not afraid of looking like her at all, but there’s nothing wrong for me to want to delay that either

      "Preventing" aging is a delusion (in the neutral sense of the term). It's a perception illusion we construct in our heads because our bodies change, die in some ways, fatigue, and yes age. We have a very real delusion when it comes to control in our societies, especially our bodies. Everyone can do what they want, just like you can try and act on something happening in your body to *support* it, but beyond that don't expect anything.

    Luckily my mama, 55 years young , has raised me to never think anything negative about age. She looks beautiful for her age (& in general) she’s got a heart of gold & is just an amazing person overall. I couldn’t care less about my age. She gets insecure about her wrinkles sometimes but I know deep down she knows she’s beautiful. & she’s always made sure that I know that she thinks I’m beautiful too.

I graduated in like 2017... But other than that, I do like probably everyone else here put a lot of effort into my skincare, although rather than anti aging, hyperpigmentation and hydration were my main focus, and I use retinol as it helps with so many things. I hate ageism and I do think is absolutely exists. I think women who are in their 60’s and 70’s + have had to deal with it a lot more in their past than what we have now. For example, my mom who is 71 used to get glammed-up but within the last 10 years she won’t wear any makeup, and refuses to have her hair dyed, or even hair a tad bit longer, because she doesn’t think women her age should do or wear anything like that. It just breaks my heart when I hear her say she can’t wear certain things because she’s too old. 😢 I’m always telling her “you can wear whatever you want mom! There’s no age limit in any of it! Wear whatever makes you feel great!” But she’s stuck in the old ways unfortunately. I wish these beauty standards for women, or beauty “rules” never existed.

I definitely resonate with the study, and I think it’s mostly due to the “fear of dying” or the realization of the finite nature of life 😂 I’ve been more positive and charitable to myself recently. I’m sure a lot of why I felt that way recently had to do with Covid isolation and image focused social media ramping up in the past 5 years. I really appreciate your insights on the subject!

    I'm a woman in tech and all of those things are RAMPANT here. However, it is RARE that ANY of that "protection" is enforced because all of it is so insidious and underhanded. You don't know if you're being treated differently because of your age, your race, or your gender, or if you're just overthinking it. And even if you DO know you're being treated differently, it's so difficult to prove because it's so fucking subtle now that reporting it is often just opting into gaslighting: "Oh that isn't what was meant," "That isn't what was going on." IS IT?
    We've hit the point where people rarely say the quiet part out loud (except the Republican party these days, which their constituents LOVE *shiver*) so it is SO HARD to prove. And because of that low-key nature of all these -isms, it's easy to internalize these messages from media too.
    Anyways - ageism is *absolutely* a real thing and women are still HEAVILY dealing with this shit in 2024, from beauty to the workplace. I know men deal with ageism (esp. in tech) at work, but for women it's like a whole other level. Sure, we're not called "spinsters" if we're not married by age 18 anymore, but that's just transformed into angry incels shouting at women for being comfortable growing old with cats and a Kindle instead of a man.

    • @AliceintheRabbitHole
      @AliceintheRabbitHole  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Mm. Good points. I hadn’t really thought about underhanded ageism (…for lack of better phrasing there), but that could indeed help to explain why the studies are “inconclusive” in terms of correlations. It’s kind of hard to get to the bottom of an issue if it’s not being faced head-on. Which annoyingly could still subconsciously contribute to internalized ageism. Real vicious cycle there!
      I wish people were direct. Heck, I’ll take people being direct jerks (easier to know who to boot from our lives lol!)

      @@AliceintheRabbitHole For sure! It's basically Lee Atwater "You start off saying this but you can't say that anymore. It hurts you - backfires. So you start saying these things. You're getting abstarct now..." I know this statement was about racism, but it's applicable to any form of discrimination, particularly in 2024.
      Also, something I forgot (but you landed on here) was that our culture is SO racist, sexist, ageist, and classist that all of this is just baked in. Being ageist, sexist, and racist is just a cornerstone of our culture - how we perceive the people around us, behave, and develop values - that it absolutely impacts everything from women being dismissed by medical professionals to researcher perceptions. It's like a feature, not a bug, at this point.
      Sorry if this got off topic. 😅😅 I'm very passionate about the topic of invisible discrimination and how it warps our actions or thinking without much notice.

      Okay! I finished your video (I’m so sorry for being one of those responders before they finish the video 😂) and wanted to tell you the Prequel Vit C is REALLY nice. I know it’s L-AA but it is lovely and feels nice. I prefer it over the G&G L-AA and Timeless (10% is too little for me, 20% too much). Never tried Skinceuticals because I ain’t got that kind of cash but it is similar to the Paula’s Choice Vit C, but a bit nicer. And for $22!!! And yeah, I bought the VitC right as they restocked the Urea lotion that I so badly wanted to try. 😑
      Gleanser breaks my face out but my body loves it and it helps my KP and eczema so I’ll likely repurchase.
      I’m pretty excited about the PC Mandelic since I haven’t found a Stratia product that works for me. Ive been using the Pillowtalkderm flash mask and love it (it is strong but minimal ingredients and high glycerin makes it work so well for me). Would love a mild option with Mandelic.
      Anyways! I’m excited for your full thoughts on Prequel and Experiment. :)

    Gut reaction to this before listening to the the video "anti-aging skincare is not intrinsically ageist, but the marketing and conversation around it often is due to scrutinizing looks specifically those naturally associated with aging". After watching the video I was shocked you didn't tie this back to 3-year olds demanding Drunk Elephant retinol products given the drama in the news. Beyond that though my post watch concept is in a similar light. I will be honest that I do use products both for personal enjoyment and to reduce visual effects of aging like wrinkles, sunspots, etc. That said I don't have that I'm aging or look down on others, I just like slowing down the effects. I could qualify that as internal ageism, but I think it's an overall healthy outlook and assume many are in the same place.

    Welcome back, Alice. I hope you're feeling better. Another great review/try on video! I've been eyeing the Medicube Eye Shot device for a while. How does it compare to the Foreo Bear Mini? I noticed Foreo recently released an eye and lip care device. Still, Medicube appeals to me more.
    Regarding Medicube, I received the Age R Booster Pro device on Monday. It's set to launch in the US next month, possibly March. Are you planning to get it, Alice? 😃 It's early days, but so far, so good! I almost bought the Age R Booster but opted to invest more in a device that combines several existing devices into one with LED.

    This was such a great video, and so perfectly timed! On January 7… just a few days ago… I turned 40 and I’m definitely still digesting that! I already knew that I had a lot of internalized ageism, but I know at least for me a lot of it is tied to not being where I want to be in life. That being said I’m still not thrilled about seeing my face change either. Sometimes I think it’s easier to kind of battle the wrinkles than it is to face some of the other things that I know are actually the cause of my anxiety but nevertheless, I guess in a lot of ways I handled it better than I expected, because I didn’t actually have a meltdown 😅 one thing that I’ve seen recently that has helped me, in a very unexpected way, was seeing all the stuff that that billionaire guy is doing to fight aging… I think seeing what somebody with unlimited resources can do and seeing how it certainly doesn’t seem to lead to happiness kind of put into perspective how I would never want to put that much energy into something like that! It’s sort of highlighted for me how toxic it can get I guess. On the other side of the coin, if I had say Paris Hilton resources, I wouldn’t be complaining lol. Being realistic though fighting it is not really a solution because everything is temporary anyway! it truly is more about acceptance and I don’t want to spend my life relying on people telling me that I don’t look my age for self-esteem. at the moment I get a lot of joy out of skincare, but I know that if I’m in my head too much about it, I need to try to figure out what the real reason behind that is!
    Idk that i’ll ever have the peace that my husband has, who wears his birthday on a T-shirt lol but if I could have at least some of that, I will consider it a success! 😂

    Anyway I am probably older than all the guys and he found me and I’m past 40 and I was the right voice for the band ( he had been searching for years)
    I don’t feel there is any age anyone can or can’t do things .
    Keep in mind it wasn’t that long ago actresses were washed up by 30 no leading roles anymore ( while their male counterparts still got to be the leading man next to a girl half his age ( hey I still love old movies) ( I’m talking 40s 50s 60s )
    ( especially Hitchcock )
    Thankfully that’s changed or at least changing and I’m seeing brands introduce older models too .

    Look after our skin our bodies and not limit ourselves . 🤘🏻

    Yk....this is obviously personal preference I suppose but I loved how you looked at the end with the treatment lip balm and then the "stickier" gloss version. It was a very nice natural color look! (imo)
    Oh- well this is related to the topic sorta- I dont usually wear make-up. And when I do I wear a more natural look, and not a lot. I do have a weakness for nice-colored (blue/gray!) eyeshadows but I've found a way to even incorporate that into a more natural makeup regimen!
    But anyway my point here is that I use even less make-up as Ive gotten older because I feel like it makes me (not everyone....just me lol) look older. Ill never forget the time my mom saw me for the first time in 3 years (I'd been living in the Seattle area and that's where I fell in love with makeup!) and the first thing she said was that I looked older.l! I was 25 😐
    And then, AND THEN more recently one of my little ones (6yo) told me I looked old because I was wearing lipstick. Come on, family!
    But yeah anwyay I was going to say two of my favorite lip products give a sheer but THERE color: the Versed lip oil and Fresh's lip balm in "Plum".
    Also, wrt peptides: I'm with you, Im all about peptides. And oh my goodness yesterday my last bottle of TO's Buffet (old name) fell off my counter and broke. Glass was everywhere. 😢 I was only able to save maybe one application out of the whole jar. Luckily it was TO and not something way more expensive. But I was gonna say, I agree with you about their Buffet/Multi-peptide serum. I've tried so many and I think it's my consistent favorite. And when I apply right after a nice antioxidant toner or mist like Indee Lee or something similar, it even feels...well, not cosmetically IN-elegant. Like it goes on smooth and nicely. Ill be picking up a new bottle this weekend, I hope!

      I’ve noticed a few things with lip products: one is that bullet lipstick is practically “out of style”, and moreso that this happened in 2020 (for obvious reasons). So yep, we’ve hit a point where lipstick does make someone look a bit older. It’s not because of physical characteristics though, it’s because of shifts in trends (this is exactly what I don’t like talking about though, because it’s easy to let this really spiral into a hyper consumptive mindset. Oh no gotta change the entire wardrobe/makeup/hair…). Still, I deeply, DEEPLY believe that most folks who experience someone saying they look older are probably just experiencing someone saying their appearance has some kind of dated element to it (gah! This is so icky but it’s true, it’s just subconscious to the speaker, and can cause a panic in the recipient. Gah.)

      2. Balms go so much better with very minimal or no makeup, while gloss looks better with a heavier eye look. So yep, the balm does look better in this video, agreed 🤣 I feel that’s a lot of the trick with makeup though. I think anyone can wear anything they want, but the end look will be complimented by certain other elements (all of this is subjective at some point though!)

      @AliceintheRabbitHole You know, that's a really good point about lipstick in general having a dated look. I think you're right, although it's never really occurred to me before this conversation.
      Most of the lip colors I wear are balms or oils, or occasionally something like Clinique's "almost lipstick" (I think that's what it's called?) It's in a roll-out stick form but the top is slanted and the formula is very sheer. I was wearing that in Black Honey for decades before it became a TikTok thing lol.
      But yeah, it's true. And I never put 2 and 2 together, but truthfully whenever I do actually wear lipstick like this style ->💄 these days, I tend to blot and blend it really well and usually add a balm or something on top. So it won't have that "lipstick" texture-y look, if that makes sense

    Anti-aging can be ageist especially when taken to extremes but I don’t think I was being ageist to my mother giving her skin firming cream for her now fragile and thinner skin. Ant-aging can be this compulsion because society is obsessed and terrified of being older of looking your age (unless you’re a kid then you want to look older) but it can also be just self care. (Like how a lot of dermatologists here say the best anti-aging treatment is daily application of sunscreen.)

      I agree. Using anti-aging skincare isn’t agist in itself. It’s the why and how someone is using it. Personally, I think the ageism is more so with how anti-aging is marketed. Media shows young people without signs of aging using these products, and were also hearing talk by Sephora kids saying they don’t want old people in stores because it’s too late for them to use anti-aging skincare as if anti-aging skincare magically stops aging 😂. I thought that was funny, but it also speaks on unrealistic expectations people can have with anti-aging and results which is another issue that is a source of insecurity for many.

The problem with young ones seeing "anti-aging" is they are way too concerned about fine lines, etc etc at a VERY young age. It's sad to see that for me.
