- Harley Davidson Road King oil and filter change. You will need 4 quarts of mobile 1, 20-50MC oil and HD oil filter. Tools needed 5/8 socket, and a Harley oil filter wrench. Pan and oil funnel. All the steps from draining oil and filling too checking levels.
#Harleydavidsonfix
When removing the old filter instead of a rag I use a long strip of aluminum foil and make a slide for oil to run to the waste oil pan.
Thats a great idea. Thank you for your Support. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Cut out a strip out of the bottom of an aluminum turkey tray, it's much thicker than just the foil, and you can save it and use it again. Regular foil is too thin and ripps easily.
Thanks Rocco, I’m tired of paying $125.00 for an oil change at the dealership. My wife bought me a motorcycle lift for Christmas and I’m doing my own changes here on in.
You will love doing your own maintenance. Avoid Dealer they will get your money. Any question just ask. Thank you for your Sub Derek.
Shit they tried to charge me 200
One thing I like about Harleys is that they are not complicated at all in order to perform most things. There are a few things here and there that can be challenging like anything really. Thanks for the video.!!! Ride safe!
Happy to help. Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching and your sub Hector. Ride safe and have a great day.
Thanks Rocco for the vid, going to change the oil on my father's neglected King tomorrow. This video was a huge help, tired of the dealer stealing $150 for something so simple.
Happy to Help, Any questions just ask. Let us know how this works out. Thank you for watching and your sub Alex. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Thanks. Love your videos. Purchased a 2001 Road king in may with 21,000 miles on it. i swapped oil, transmission, and primary oil. Really liking the bike. You make it so much easier. Once again. Thanks for the videos.
Happy to help, Any questions just ask, Graduations on your Road King. I think they're great motorcycles. Thank you for watching and all your support Larry. Ride safe and have a great day.
I like Rocco's maintenance videos, he's easy to listen to and explains things in very simple terms , just makes your job simple , following his directions, keep up the good work Rocco !
Happy to help. Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching and your sub Jerry. Ride safe and have a great day.
I haven't done this task in a while, your video was a great refresher! Thanks Much!
Happy to help, Ride Safe and have a great day.
Thanks for this one and I can use that tip about removing only bottom plug first. I always get a hand soaked in oil every time with cap off too.
You WANT TO take off the oil fill cap before removing the drain plug so the oil DOES rush out fast helping remove any metal shaving or debris that might be in the pan.
I like the video, but also wanted to add once thing. I watched a guy on a video here go over the difference in a HD oil filter and a Fram. Several viewers were giving him a hard time about Fram, so he did one to show the difference. You have got to watch the difference. It will make you purchase Fram in the future if you love your bike. Its: "Harley Davidson doesn't want you to see inside the new oil filter vs Fram". It is a fabulous video and will open your eyes!
Happy to help. I stopped using Harley Davidson filters about three years ago. I use high flow 170 C or 171C ones for a sportster and ones for a dual cam. Thank you for watching and all your support Rob. Ride safe and have a great day. I agree totally that Harley Davidson oil filters are cheap. They don't even cover them so when you buy them. There's no seal on the filter. Who does that. Let me not get started.
Thanks for your videos, I've recently bought a 95 Road King and I'm looking at doing a full oil swap. Your videos have been excellent.
Happy to hear this video helps...Thank you for the Sub...Have a great day..
Always come back here when it’s time for a oil change. 😊
Happy to help. Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching and all your support Dae Dae. Ride safe and have a great day.
I'm getting a road king this week. Gonna go with amsoil oil and filter. No need to change oil that often. I have an 03 vulcan 1600 thats like new. I change the oil every 10k and the bike is 17 years old with no issues. Thanks for the vid.
Great Bike, I love my Road King. Good luck with your new ride, Any questions just ask. Thank you for your Sub and comment. Ride Safe and have a great day
@@TwoWheelRocco how often do you change the transmission and primary oils?
10,000 is what I do.
@@TwoWheelRocco cool I think I'll have it done cause the bike has been sitting for over a year. Gonna try it myself. Thanks for the vid!
Any questions just ask,
compliment, from ITALY, I have too harley softail fat boy 2004, you came in italy fro holiday in ROMA end you speak how i none work in harley. ))))
I would love to..Thank you for the Sub Carmelo. Happy New Years.
Thanks for great video, I don't think I would have the courage to start it up with only 2 qts in
Happy to help. Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching all your support Joseph. Ride safe and have a great day.
Another great video thanks Rocco. I gotta say though anyone else see that oil filter thing looked old and cracked! I wonder if he was showing old filter just for video purposes post new filter install?
Happy to help. But you are so right. That was the last filter I ever bought from Harley Davidson. They're not sealed. Yes that hurt. Thank you for watching and all your support. Big Nord. Ride safe and have a great day. I like High Flow oil filters, eBay very reasonably priced 171C for twin cam motors..
Thanks for that info and you too keep the rubber on the road brother! @@TwoWheelRocco
You WANT TO take off the oil fill cap before removing the drain plug so the oil DOES rush out fast helping remove any metal shaving or debris that might be in the pan.
Why is my oil fill cap stuck?
Never fill the oil filter bc if its already filled then the shit that does get in there at first startup wont filter the debris out
Just trying to help. Thank you for watching and your comment. Rob. Ride safe and have a great day.
Great vid,Im about to do my first oil and filter change on my '13 FLHR.
Happy to help, Any questions just ask. Thank you for your Sub. Let us know how this works out Moonie.
@@TwoWheelRocco worked fine! I'd done roughly 6000 miles, well over due.New oil and filter and the bike was as responsive as when I first got it. Its done 53,000 milesand hauls nicely.Still in factory condition.
Do u have videos for transmission and primary as well. Video was great thank you
Sorry no I don't. I will put them on the list and get to work..
rocco ...... do you do the oil change and fill while the bike is on it's side stand ? or upright ?
I like to have the bike straight up and down. Get a 2 x 6 and you can put it onder the kickstand and that will get you almost there. That's how I like to do it. It helps to get the drain pan under the bike and for you to remove the oil filter. makes it easier. I hope this helps thank you for watching Dale and your sub. Let us know how it works out. Ride safe and have a great day
Awesome Video
Thank you for your support. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Another good video Rocco, hey I was in a pinch for time & was near a Harley Dealership and needed oil changed, they changed it and 2 days later the (2) hoses near the filter started leaking & dripping oil,, so I took it back and they said the top
hose is needing replaced due cracking and clips are needing replaced, do you have any video showing how to replace those (2) hoses near oil filter? I looked (I’m subscribed) & couldn’t find one anywhere .
Thank you again Two Wheel Rocco
If I'm not right you have a 2016 Road King. I don't see the hoses or clamps being the problem. It sounds like your oil cooler plate is loose. This happens when they loosened the oil filter. I would suggest remove the oil filter. You will see the threads that the filter screws into. they'll be a nut at the end of that threaded pipe. tighten that, that will reseat the seal on the plate for your oil cooler. That's a common problem. before you do anything clean with brake fluid around the hoses in the clamps and see if that's where it's leaking. If you can take a picture and send it to erocco3964@gmail.com. Hope this helps. this happened after they worked on your bike.
Google. road king oil cooler leak. Hope this helps.
@@TwoWheelRocco
Thank you Rocco, yes it happened 2 days after they changed the oil & yes, I personally sprayed the hoses off myself and cleaned it good and you can see where that leak is,, it’s just coincidentally that it’s leaking right afterwards. I will email you pictures. Your much appreciated Rocco.
It looks to me at the top hose next to oil filter.
@@babybugspaw7085 sounds like they were a little rough when removing the oil filter. Should be no big deal to fix yourself. You know an A mechanics don't do your oil changes. Sounds like a helper. But Harley dealer will never take ownership for nothing..
@@TwoWheelRocco oh I see! Baby starter mechanics. “Helpers” I want to do my own and have fair amount of basic knowledge to do maintenance stuff I just was in a pinch for time that day & needed it changed, lol!
Anyway, if I change those 2 hoses myself do I need to drain the oil, otherwise I will have oil pouring out those hoses when I remove them?,,
nice video i will never pay for a oil change again
Happy to help. That's what it's about. It's rewarding to do your own surface and fully understand your motorcycle. Thank you for watching and all your support Bradley. Ride safe and have a great day.
I am new to Harleys but thinking of getting a Road King second hand. Are they generally good bikes ? Any advice welcome.
They are great bikes. That's what I ride a Road King. Very enjoyable ride and usually reasonably priced. Make sure you buy it with low miles. And you will have a great ride. Any questions just ask. Good luck with your search. Lots of them sitting in garage with low miles, find one.
@@TwoWheelRocco Thanks for the advice and sorry if this is a stupid question but what would you consider High /low miles.I'm in the UK and a guy is selling some ex- Texas Police Road Kings that he imported for a business that is now closing and I'm interested.
@@skoot2u That's a hard question. It's all about service of the motorcycle. Oil changes make for a long lasting motorcycle. Since it's a police bike you have to know it was serviced. What year and how many miles?
@@TwoWheelRocco There are six bikes available newest 2015 oldest 2004 mileage ranging from 34,000 to 103,000.I know they have had regular servicing at a Harley dealers but I think i will give them a miss ? Thanks for your advice.
@@skoot2u I think you're making the right decision. Find a bike with 10,000 or less miles. And you will know the history. Plenty of bikes in garage just setting. Be patient and you will find a ride for you. Good luck ride safe and have a great day.
Nice bike! Looks familiar. Mine is a 2006 FLHRI Black with blue flames... and my flames are identical. Is yours factory? Mine is obviously factory paint.
Yes it is factory paint. 2002 SE CVO Road King.
Oil cap as no treads you just pull it ? My dad just got one and i was try to help him dont want ro break someone's bike
Happy to help. Yes there is no threads, rocket back-and-forth and pull. They can be a little difficult the first time. Thank you for watching all your support. Ride safe and have a great day. Road King are great motorcycles.
A buddy of mine says I can use Syn throughout the entire change. (primary, trans, gear0. Is that true? Can I use the 20-50 you used in this video for EVERYTHING? I' a new rider. Any info helps. Thanks in advance!
Yes you can. Ride Safe and Thank You for your support.
Two Wheel Rocco, why do you start the engine after 2 qts. of oil? Air bubbles or what?
Happy to help... Exactly, air in system , with a new oil filter . Thank you for watching and your sub Shawn..Ride Safe...Have a great day.
What...no K&N oil-filter! Just Kidding. Looks Great, thanks for reminding (riders) on the oil-filter cap! (Time/Frustration saver)
Hey, Rocco! How about oil change indicator? Is there any service indicator to reset?
No there is not. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Two Wheel Rocco thanks very much for the quick reply 👍🏻 It’s good to know 🙂 Have a great day too!
You have to step up to a Honda VTX to get that feature.
James Garrett 🙂
Are you aware of the o-ring on the drain plug? Occasional replacement of it seals the plug making thread sealer unnecessary.
Happy to help. Thread sealer is just an extra. Very cheap and works well. Thank you for watching. And your support Travis. Ride safe and have a great day.
Let me know if you have any question
Two Wheel Rocco is bike straight up a and down or on stand ? What year bike ? And I have same stick but mine swivels at cap but looks exactly like yours
Is the bike upright while you’re doing this?
Happy to help. Yes it is upright. Thank you for watching and your sub jeffy104.. Let us know how it works out. Ride safe and have a great day.
Do you need to jack the bike up?
Happy to help. No you do not. But when you do the primary side put a 2 x 4 under the kickstand so the bike is straight up and down and when you remove the primary cover you don't leak oil onto your floor.. Thank you for watching and your sub Maze. Ride safe and have a great day.
Rocco, I know you were trying to get the best image for the camera, but it is important to keep the oil stick as level as possible when checking the level. As I am sure you know, checking oil with the stick elevated can give a false reading. Thanks for a good video.
Happy to Help, Just trying to help... Thank you for your input and sub Steve.. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Love your videos! But dude - That funnel is nasty as hell! Wipe it out completely before pouring clean oil through it! Also clean up the outside of your funnel. You wouldn't want any of that nastiness in your engine would you? Anyway love your videos!!!
Happy to help. Thank you for your comment. I will keep that in mind to clean the funnel which I do before and after every oil change. But sometimes your hands just get a little greasy and the yellow funnel shows it. Thank you for watching and all your support Earl. Ride safe and have a great day.
Why did you use the Mobil oil & not the Harley Davidson oil?
I like Mobil 1 Syn. Harley Davidson is not that close to me. I order my filters online and buy my oil from Auto Zone. Hope that helps. Thank you for your Sub. Ed. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Harley Davidson does not make oil and at one time there was testing done and the HD oil did not do so well. That may have improved but they still do not make oil.
love that new york accent
Thank you for your support, Ride Safe and have a great day. NY NY
Are you changing the oil hot or cold?
Hot is how I do it. Thank you for your Sub. Ride Safe and have a great day.
How do you use the primary fill funnel
Happy to Help. Clip it in and she slides in place. pour oil slowly. Thank you for watching and your sub Seth. Ride safe and have a great day.
Thank you sir

Just rebuilt a 2002 touring model, rode bike for about 75 miles, drained the oil and very little came out. I kept the oil filler cap like you to control oil flow. When I removed the cap still very little came out. I put 3 and 1/2 quarts in. Any ideas.
If you put 3 1/2 quarts in, then. 3 1/2 quarts got to come out. 75 miles that much on miles. Take a better look at the drain plug you could have used a little Allen head that is at the bottom and that could be a problem. Take a look, might have used wrong plug. Let us know how this works out.
Thanks!
Happy to help. Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching and your sub Jimmy. Ride safe and have a great day.
What is the other plug for the big one
Happy to help. What year Road King? There's three plugs Primary, transmission and your oil. They will all have the same hardware most times. Then the rest are casting holes with Allen heads.
I have a 2002 Roadking
Great bike. 5/8 drain plugs. Threedrain holes the rest are castings holes with hardware. not to be removed.
@@TwoWheelRocco thankyou Rocco

make sure you use the right filter, some of those bastards will sell you anything, twin cam filter has anti drain valve,( rubber in the small holes) EVO has nothing in the small holes.

One Harley Davidson oil filter......hundred dollas.
