The great thing about these simple traditional dishes is you can customise it to your own tastes (so no issues with you adding the spices!). I do skin-on lumpy mash, because I prefer the texture that way. I also like putting broccoli into the meat mix, chopped into very small florets. And I tend to forgo the wine because I don't drink wine, and it's kinda wasteful buying a bottle just for a bit in cooking - worchestershire sauce or hendersons relish, or even a bit of soy sauce, adds the depth of flavour just fine for me. Yours looks great! I'd eat it!

If you’re in the UK Oxo now do a stockpot which is a wine pot; they do red or white.
There’s no wine taste to them (I, like you, don’t drink), but they really do add flavour to stews / gravy, etc.
One of the wine pots equals half a glass of wine.

i have a solution to that! buy an inexpensive bottle of red and turn it into icecubes and store in the freezer - then you can take out 50 or 100 ml 'wine' as required.

Hi, it looks great ... only thing I do differently is get a pan, sweat down onions, carrots, garlic and celery, then add the mince to the pan ... keep it all moving until mince is brown, then add the wine to cook off, then add the flour (off the heat) then add stock bit by bit, then after it's reduced, add the tomato purée, and the Worcester sauce. Simmer until thickens (stir occasionally) ... just before putting mixture in baking dish, add the frozen peas. Then top with your lovely mashed potatoes. 👍

As a proud traditional English Auntie who lives alone in my cottage with my cats I can say that your cottage pie looks absolutely lovely!!!! Some lovely green peas and gravy on the side would be my only additions for this gorgeous pie. Proper comfort! To answer a previous comment about 'starching out the pots'...for a pie like this where you want the mash to be stiff rather than creamy, you don't need to...but there is absolutely no harm in doing so and it would not effect the pie topping if you just add less butter and milk when mashing the pots. If you are making roasties or wedges then that is when 'starching' is noticed more because it effects the outside edges. Also your casserole dish was absolutely spot on. There will always be regional variations to the meat recipe, some people ad wine some don't, some add garlic some don't, some use Bisto, some use no tomato, etc etc. Your final pie looked perfect and looked like it tasted like a Classic Cottage Pie. Sorry for the long message :) take care and all the best x

When the weather is damp & cold there is little to top comfort foods- cottage pie, chunky beef or chicken stew with herby dumplings, beef cobbler, bangers and mash with onion gravy. My favourite soup is Mulligatawny soup which is curried beef.
As you topped your delicious cottage pie with cheese I would call that a Cumberland pie. If you have leftovers it will taste even better reheated the next day.

This can be made with lamb mince and it's called shepherd's pie instead.
There are regional versions of these, the Welsh versions typically include leeks. In the Yorkshire versions it's saved on top of a Yorkshire pudding.

Lovely looking cottage pie. It was traditionally made with left overs from sunday, with left over roast meat minced and left over mashed potatoes, do it was a reasonably quick dish. Few have the big riast dinner with left overs these days, so making from scratch is now the norm. Im old enough to remember when leg of lamb was a very cheap meal and putting the cold mest through a manually cranked meat mincer ("spong" brand).

Yep, looks good. Comfort food for a cold day and we have plenty of those in the UK. Personally, I make it a lot simpler than that. Basically all I do is the ground beef, an onion, a carrot, salt and pepper and a mash topping and that's it. I forgo the wine, and peas are usually a side and maybe sauteed with celery if you like. In Sheffield (UK) we never use Worcestershire Sauce. We used a product called Henderson's Relish which is a similar product but not as sharp in taste and it has a fuller/rounder flavour. We splash it on when the pie is on the plate

Just sat down to eat some homemade cottage pie and this popped up on my suggestions. That looked really delicious, every family has there own variations on the regular recipe so the extra spices are all good. The only suggestions would be on your method and cooking pots, like sweating the onions first and using a bigger pot to put everything in, but all things considered very well done 😀👍

Im not sure exactly what you've tried to make so far but if not toad in the hole then that! especially as you're working on your Yorkshire pudding game. Toad in the hole with mash and onion gravy with a sice of peas or carrots or something would be my recommendation to try make next!

That looks really good but I don't add the spices or the cheese and make it just a little bit wetter than yours, still yummy and serve it with cabbage, one of my favourite winter meals

Good thing about home cooking is it's for you so you can add exactly what you like, i add ghost pepper powder to most things i have made at home because I like a good kick to my food😂 it looks delicious well done, it also makes me happy that you know the difference between cottage pie and shepherd's pie 🥧 cheese on top of both, i would also have extra gravy on hand to put on once on the plate 😊

Looking pretty good, personally follow my grandmothers recipe for this you got in ingredients correct the only thing I would say to me is “wrong” is the order that you did things.
Brown mince, add onion brown it off a little, add garlic cook till can smell the garlic, add red wine and reduce, add Worcestershire sauce and reduce slighlty, add tomao purée cook till combined, add beef stock, add herbs and spices, add half precooked carrots to the mixture and peas simmer till softened, add mixture to oven dish cover with mash potatoes make lines on top with fork, put small knobs of butter over the top, place in oven till light golden brown then add the cheese and cook continue to cook in oven till golden brown and melted cheese

You need an onion aswell as the caramelised texture is great when fried with your minced beef.

Add a spoonful of horseradish sauce to the meat when you cook it, and grated cheddar on top is a must. You’ll thank me next time.
I don’t use tomato or wine or nutmeg as the horse radish is overpowering to them. But it makes it soooo yummy

Great job. When my Mum used to make it she would use the beef leftovers from our Sunday roast dinner.

The tomato paste is something I never put in mine. I also use a red wine stock cube instead of red wine because I can drink alcohol because of medication. If you add tomato add a splash of milk to get rid of the acidity. If you like spice try curry paste to add the spice. You can add cooked swede and cabbage to the mash with the butter which really boosts the flavour.

The only thing I'd really do different is skip the Worcester sauce because I don't eat fish.
There are alternatives out there like mushroom ketchup or a sauce called Hendo's that's popular in parts of Yorkshire, so I'd just use them instead, and/or a good stock.

My missus always puts in a teaspoon of Marmite in the cottage/shepherds pie and it really adds to the flavor.

Spicy 🌶️ cottage pie, interesting 🤔 I’ve never tried that before. I might have to give a try one day.

English man here - just some tips for your cottage pie. Bake it in the oven WITHOUT the cheese on top, then take it out, add the cheese and put it under the grill. Makes it lovely and crisp all over. Also, add some Worcestershire sauce to the meat and some white pepper. Pour the meat sauce into the dish and let it cool down to almost cold, THEN add the mash. Putting the cheese on first prevents the mash underneath from crisping. Add it at the end then grill. Cheers bro.

100 Best Dishe in the World - This came in 30th but called Escondidinho and Brazilian - typical. Escondidinho translates to Shepherd pie. I always forget the cheese...and would like to try some wine or beer to the meat. Homely, warming comfort food great for winter.

Nailed it!!! Try using Bisto gravy granules or oxo cubes? Add a little Dijon mustard to the sauce 👍

Looks luscious Kalani.... Try adding a tin of chopped tomatoes and just a teaspoon of tomatoes paste another time you make it.... Plus have other veg on the side as well like a nice savoy cabbage....
    But yours looks brilliant.....xx
