Not having salt n vinegar on fish and CHIPS is like a brit going to America to try texas bbq and saying "hold the marinade just plain meat" 😂 then dipping it in milk
Many of us don't put vinegar on anything from the chippy. I prefer not to mask the tastes and soak the food - be it nice crispy battererd haddock, haggis or black pudding - with vinegar. iI always made me laugh when I went to Europe, in the 60s, and saw some Brits put red wine vinegar on the chips (or frites).
I hope someone has already explained to you:- tap water in the UK is perfectly good and safe to drink, so you don't need to drink expensive bottled water all the time! I know it isn't often drinkable in the US.
If you're planning to spend any time in the uk, I recommend teaching your kids to eat with a knife and fork and not speaking with your mouth full. As a brit I found that very difficult to watch.
The very nice man in the Fish n Chip shop made you all very welcome, gave the boys lollipops, watched you struggle to use cutlery, ignored you talking with your mouth full and rudely demanding hot sauce and you had the ignorant audacity to rudely critique his food while playing with it, with him stood there. That was incredibly disrespectful, ill-mannered, ungrateful, and unkind. Just because something is different does not mean it is bad or wrong. Americans are used to highly sugared and chemical filled processed food normally covered in yet more sugar/chemical sauce in overly large and unnecessary portions. That is why so many are grossly overweight. Many Americans who travel to other countries carry their superiority complex with them. The US is not superior. It just does some things differently. Wind that complex in, learn to say, "Excuse me", "please" and "thank you". Just enjoy the experience, the adventure of it all and you will rub along just fine.
@@talldarkvikingyeah that’s cause USA are stupid lol they say adidas wrong even when Germany told them they say it wrong but they still do and they butcher the English language
use the touch bottons on the stove top to turn on the hobbs then +/- to turn up or down the heat and if there is a light beside the lock symbol you need to hold the lock to unlock it hope that helps
The bottle tops that don't come off are a fairly new thing here, but it's to aid recycling, and as you said, to stop there being bottle tops everywhere :-D
Also part of the drive to cut sugars in foods on health grounds. Some cereals have even gone from the market. You only have to go out, anywhere in the UK to see the obesity problems. Not as bad as the gross sights in the USA but getting there.
French fries are NOT a McDonaids 'invention'. No more than hamburger is American. The Yanks, during the wars and as travellers ate frites in Belgium and France and called them French Fries when back home. There's no such thing as a good frite or chip in any of the American franchises, in the UK and Europe. English chippies make crap chips, btw - especially in London.
Some tips: The sooner you at least TRY some table manners - the better - it's quite important in Europe. This will help your kids in the future. I know it's overlooked in USA, I've seen how Americans eat in TV-shows like "Hell's Kitchen" - 90 % of the guests use the cutlery like wild beasts. Water is safe to drink from regular taps in whole northern Europe. Best of LUCK!
I had a halogen hob ( not a stove) in my last house. I think you have to press the things that look like buttons in the middle of the hob , to turn it off or on and to adjust the temperature. Those hobs that are completely smooth are brilliant to keep clean . You can buy a hob cleaner for ceramic hobs in the supermarket.
These are 'chippy chips' not fries. Next time, combine with a buttered bread roll to have a 'chip butty'! Curry sauce or Gravy (depends on what part of UK) + chips is also nice. Other things worth trying: Pukka Pies (savoury meat pies, which should be flaky, beware shops that just reheat them!), battered sausage, chipolata, pineapple fritter and the classic pickled egg! Battered mars bar for the really adventurous!
To turn on the top of the stove .you will find a small round button with a line in the middle of it .probably on your left .put your finger on it and hold for a few seconds .it switch on and make a bleeping sound for a few seconds. Then go to the part you want to switch on and put your finger on the + sign to turn it on.
I’m no expert but … that looks like an induction hob? If it is the surface isn’t meant to get hot, it works by using a magnetic field to heat the pan directly. In other words the pan will heat up but the cooker top itself won’t get very hot.
She was using the knobs for the oven not the hob 😂It is an induction hob, I have one, it is touch control, no knobs involved. I wasn't sure if she had the hob turned on at the socket, I couldn't tell. As you say, don't leave pans on there or she could burn the pan if empty, especially when she isn't sure what she is doing. Induction hobs do cool down very quickly though, once she's worked it out 😀 I love my induction hob, heats up water for pasta in next to no time. I'm wondering if she worked out the oven as you have to set both dials and press a button to pre-heat the oven.
I am not wishing to be rude, but you must understand that you are not in the USA! Rein in your criticism a bit, use a few please and thank yous, and try British food without preconceived ideas. Oh, and they are chips not French fries, which are different. Also, our table manners are a bit different to yours.
You have a Heron Food! Top tip for Herons is, if you find a food you like but tonnes of it because they won't sell it after a few days. They will get rid of it and put something completely different in its place.
I had this problem in my new flat, it turns out I had to set the time on the clock for it to work 😂 it took me ages to figure that out. P.s, it doesn't have to he the exact time. If you input an hour and a minute it will work.
Your honesty is really refreshing; everyone makes beginner mistakes, but you own yours. Bravo! But why do you allow your young son to speak so disrespectfully to you?! And PLEASE - teach him how to use cutlery correctly! But aside from that:- Welcome to England!! I hope you enjoy the experience. Very best wishes to you!
@@mattking5936 well where i'm from takes you 5 minutes commute pretty much anywhere in the country from a fish and chip shop (takes me 2 minutes from 3 different fish and chips shops). nobody wants to sit down with other people standing around ordering in a tiny as shop. much more comfortable eating at home or even outside like at a park/beach
You should've had mushy peas with fish and chips and loads of salt and vinegar 😅 try a traditional Sunday roast next you need someone's grandma to make you 1 though because pubs and restaurants are just not the same

British kids and parents do it as well.
@willcambeul6172 nobody I know.
Chips, not fries.
Cutlery, not harpoons.

They are NOT French Fries !! They are CHIPS !! French Fries are the ones you get in McDonalds etc.
Interesting, I didn’t know that
Thanks for clarifying 😊
Chips are known as FRENCH FRIES in the USA.

You can always ask for the chips to be fried a little longer to get them crispier. The crispy ends are the best.
The bottle tops that don't come off are a fairly new thing here, but it's to aid recycling, and as you said, to stop there being bottle tops everywhere :-D
This is such a great idea. Honestly, I wish more American companies would do this. I'm tired of seeing bottle tops around my house . 😂😂😂
You sometimes have to set the clock before the oven will work! Don't ask me why!
These electric hobs are a puzzle when you normally use gas, it took me a while to learn how to use one on holiday,. Welcome to the U K
Our cereals are designed so that you can add whatever amount of sugar you prefer.

french fries are thin like you see at mc donalds, those are Chips, proper chip shop chips, the fish looks good too
U say mc Donald’s like they created them why not say thin skinny chips are fries cause mc Donald’s AINT the only place that sells them

We usually cook oatmeal (we call it porridge) in the microwave lol
sometimes I cook it in the microwave as well, but I prefer the stove

I think the controls for the stove top might be built into the glass panel itself so that knob below is probably for the oven.
I think you're right.
I think it's an induction hob. The glass won't get hot but a pot of water/milk will. Don't leave pots on it if you're not sure it's off? 😂

The kids cannot even use cutlery properly
americans don't use knives
@RaymondAdams-t2d Apparently they can't use forks either!!!
Knives and forks are quantum physics to Americans. They use daggers, spoons and fingers.
😂@@tmac160
why no tomatoe ketchup
Where did they live before...?? .. In a tent in the desert..??
Salt & vinegar are essential, especially plenty of vinegar. 🖖
Great tip!
@stylewithpatience Vinegar always goes first so the salt sticks to the chips if you put salt on first the Vinegar washes the salt off

American doesn't know what an induction hob is.
I don’t think they have them in US yet, or if they do they are not common.
Them cookers tho... I can't figure them out either 😂😂
It looks like that's an induction cooker, you will need a stainless steel pan.
why pick somewhere out in the sticks
Because that’s where I live. I’m 2 hours from London.
