So awesome ! Late to these posts and the EV hot rodding party, in general, but I had to post a comment. I love everything aboutthis build. will hit you up at flashdrive when I start my own build.
Love this build! Thanks for sharing all the videos. Doing an EV conversion on my 85 is on my bucket list. I'm looking forward to see what's next for the EV BRAT. Keep up the great work!
Great episode! Laguna Seca test lap(s) next? Yes, the Pike’s Peak endurance run should be on the list. All things considered so far I think you’re outdoing the Lordstown Endurance pickup!
Think you missed a trick the brat fwd + locked diff 4wd is ancient tech would have been a better conversation with a wrx gearbox & viscous diffs but amazing conversation well done
So, how much for you guys to convert my Baja, and can we make it compatible with "modern" charging infrastructure? Figure we can put the batteries where the tank is, under the passenger seat. It's basically just a without-back. If we do this, then I don't have to patch my exhaust!
This is great! I'm looking to start sourcing parts for my 85 300zx ev build sometime this year. Do you guys have any advice for someone who new to conversions?
Thanks and yes it could go faster, but we didn’t want to embarrass Marty and Doc :) We aren’t sure of the top speed. The little 13” tires and gear ratio are the limiting factors. Your turbo wagon sounds like a rare beast.
So the general impression I get from the motor is that the initial acceleration is phenomenal, but it becomes average after that. Would you say that is accurate?
how does it shift? I assume pretty harshly since the rpms don't go down when the clutch is in? Or do they? Did you get good at backing off of the accelerator so that you got smooth shifts? Does 5th gear give you greater range on the highway?
I watched the entire series and have a few questions. Which Hyper 9 motor did you use, 120v or 144v and was your decision based on the batteries you used(available voltage)? Approximate range and your kwh capacity? We all know that range can vary depending on many things just like gas mileage varies so just under normal daily driving. At 88mph, what gear were you in? I've read the motors have a max rpm of 8000, just curious how close to that you were and the gear you were using. One last question, approximate weight? Cool build and very nice clean job. Thanks for the videos.
We used 120v with 5 batteries, mostly due to space constraints. We get ~100 miles per charge. The gear ratio of 4.09 and the the small 165/70R13s tires limited the speed more than the motor. The brat weigh under 3k
Thanks for the comment . We have detailed costs and a build like this runs mid-20k for the conversion . It can do more than 100 miles but that’s about the average range with the gearing and tire size of the BRAT.
You just don't understand manual shifting your side of the pond and why bother in an EV? You will break that transmission, simply because you don't know how to shift gears properly. Every change is a momentary loss and it is so cringe how you don't lift off the power while doing so. Leave it in 3rd and see what happens.
The Hyper9 doesn’t spin as fast as a Tesla motor. If you leave it in 4th, it is really slow off the line. In my Beetle that they converted, 3rd is good till about 55mph, but it’s pretty loud at that speed. I often start in 3rd and short shift it at 25-35mph. 2nd is for “stoplight grand prix’s”!

Just blew up the engine in my turbo Baja. Definitely makes me want to ev swap it!

Great video…
When are you coming to Colorado?
In August for the Rock Roll Car show at bandimere raceway
That was great!! Is that the ea81 trans?
Ea71! We beat it up pretty good but it did not break!
I want One
Very cool! What’s the range during “regular” driving?
100 miles give or take depending on my foot.
So 160km with a 26kWh pack gives 16.3kW/100km which is on par with efficient modern EVs. Well done. Do you have regen braking?
Really amazing great work!!! how long does it take to charge 100%? Have fun at Pikes Peak
It really depends on the charger . But at the house it’s about 3 hrs. At a fast charge station it’s 15 minutes
@@dissrepair Forgot to ask any idea to build an automation process that takes care the service updates
@@dissrepair What charger are you using that gives you fast charge ability?

Thanks. Laguna sounds like a great idea

Batteries are key. Spend your money on good ones. They will make or break your project. Call us if you want to talk through the conversion process
@@dissrepair Are you guys still located in austin?
@@ilooklikebillgatesThey are in Coupland, Texas, just north east of Austin.
What is “Performance Mode”? Is it a Brat setting or a Hyper9 setting? I didn’t hear anything from you about a Performance Setting on my Beetle, LOL.
We got rid of performance and economy mode. Nobody wants economy mode !
@@dissrepair I could have used “eco mode” when we were stuck on west 46 at the Valero gas station with 7% showing on the clock!
I assume it could go faster than 88mph, My stock subaru gl 1.8 turbo wagon could go up to 109mph. The torque is amazing on your brat, awesome build.

Transmission and gearing are the limiting factors. We changed to aluminum flywheel as well. It’s faster now

It shifted great initially but that little brat trans doesn’t like power shifting! If you drove it nicely it does great

In the time it takes to say 'we have plenty of batteries' you could have just told us how many Kw! Sick project though!
Wonder if you can make it faster than an STI
Are you still using a clutch?
Yes still uses clutch
Can you guys do a EV build cost breakdown and what's your range. I heard 100miles but can it do more?

How fast is it in reverse tho?????
Where in Texas are you?I used to live in Balch Springs outside of Dallas

VW bus rims fit, get ya a little more
We tired the vw route and they are different. Too bad lots for good vw rims
