"Good Luck, Babe" is a lesbian song about how some will try to cover their true self to make a het marriage work to fit into society, which is so powerful for the lesbian community considering comp-het is such an obstacle and burden many of us have had shoved down our throats. People are allowed to relate to songs in however way they want to, but meanings of songs can be very purposeful lyrically and be backed up by the lived experience of the artist. Chappell Roan is a now out lesbian who definitely understands the social weapon that is comp-het.
I cried the first time I heard the song because it felt like the first time that my first love was spoken about so explicitly as we were both from small homophobic towns, it's really clearly a love song for a very specific but common queer femme experience

Her mission is to tour conservative small towns rarely visited for queer audience to dress up and experience queer joy even for a night. This is why she has built a strong grassroots fanbase through word of mouth so fast in her career unlike other queer artists regardless their race. A LESBIAN artist even with lyrics so silly and fun about being with women, sang by the GP is a huge breakthrough! @@Romanovs_x_1Dshe identified as bi, but her most recent album showcased her journey into realizing she was lesbian, and she’s been saying she’s a lesbian for a while now and that’s she’s no longer attracted to men.
She’s the definition of a rising star she’s taking off!!! I’m sure most of it has to do with opening for Olivia, but I honestly think it’s in part to Good Luck, Babe! The song is both incredibly commercial and palatable, while still being very original and Chappell Roan. She’s just unstoppable.
Hard to tell, with the timing- she was definitely on her way up before that though! I think she would’ve seen a lot of success either way, it just happened much quicker thanks to that tour.
Pop is centered in whiteness. Mainstream is centered in whiteness. White (adjacent) queers get opportunities to showcase to the masses mor than queer black artists do. The black women do not get the same amount of support from their fans when they are openly queer identified. Meg the Stallion just released her album and on a couple of those songs she mentioned that she was into women but she isn’t really identified as a queer artist. Janelle monae is a black queer icon but she is overlooked, I think, because of her identity as a black woman. Black womens sexual liberation is represented as being hypersexual and active with men in the music industry;therefore, when these women do identify openly, we tend to tune that out. Also, A lot of people separate their queer identity and their sexuality. When that is the case, we tend to center the cisgender and heteronormative artists who claim the LGBTQ community sexually but not in a way that centers queerness
I wanna say I don't think Pop is centered around whiteness. Most roots of Pop, if not all of them come from Black Music and lots of time alot of popular Pop songs/artist come from Black artist/culture. Yes White artist have an advantage, Black artist don't have. But I think sooner or later, some Pop Black Girlie is going to enter the stage. I bet my money on Runaway Bree being the one.
i think there are quite a few amazing black pop singers/songwriters that have gotten their flowers over the years. beyoncé, neyo, usher, timbaland, lauryn hill, chaka khan, alicia keys, rihanna, frank ocean, michael jackson, and whitney houston to name a few. ofc it’s easier for white artists to get big, but i don’t think it’s fair to discount the impact the artists i listed have had on pop music
The first time I heard Pink Pony Club I bawled my eyes out. I needed to take it off of my playlist so that it didn’t come on while I was driving, and have to pull over to emotionally recuperate. The song makes me feel seen in ways no other media has made me feel before, and I couldn’t be more grateful for it. I hope Chappell Roan has the most fulfilling career because she deserves it, and the queer people need it.
I bawl my eyes out to pink pony club too 🥹🥹🥹 I’ve always loved performing but was made to feel so terrible for it by my mom and did everything she wanted instead of what I wanted so Chappell being like sorry mom! Like I should’ve just gets me every fucking time. And the guitar solo at the end gets me too lol
we’re getting a lot of great queer latina artists popping off rn young miko, villano antillano, kali uchis, lauren juaregui are a few i can think of off the top of my head, but we need more sapphic poc pop icons
Brazil has had an entire crop of drag artists that have been consistently doing quality music since the late 2010s dipping on several genres and styles like Pabllo Vittar and Glória Groove not to mention the main pop girlies that are queer and in the forefront here - Anitta, Ludmila and Luisa Sonza or the trans royalty of linn da quebrada, jup do bairro and urias
Age of Pleasure by Janelle Monae is a very queer album! Songs about self-exploration, poly attraction and desires, and just experiencing various expressions of pleasure through s-x, creativity, rewarding your own hard work, and ownership of one's own body
Janelle "motherfucking" Monaé is THE queer icon to me. She was there eay before anyone had the balls to be out and proud of her sexuality. I love her and she is one of the most creative people out there. I hope she comes out with something that will go mainstream.
i know this is not an oppression competition, but arguably female queer representation has been the one we've been missing the most. it makes me so happy to finally see it: chappell, reneé, billie and victoria monét doing their thing. openly queer men have been around finding ways to be respected in the music industry: freddie mercury, elton john, david bowie, lil nas X. but also, i hope that this phenomenon (or better femininomenon) does not lead to an overinvestment and capitalization on female sexuality, in a sense that i expect those artists to be able still to express themselves beyond their sexualities. ever since billie came out, ppl seem to be overinvested on it. let my girl be more than bi or whatever. let her talk to other women without sexualizing every word...
I'm surprised Hayley Kiyoko has exited the conversation about gay pop girlies when a few years ago everyone was calling her Lesbian Jesus. Did she have some kind of controversy I'm not aware of? If not, a collab between her and Chappell would be iconic
Kiyoko is a millennial gay pop girlie. Her, and Janelle Monae have cemented themselves as icons in the genre but it's now the next generations turn to push to new heights so they aren't really mentioned in the new gen of sapphic pop stars
Honestly, her rise to success definitely has to do a lot more with her debut album, and good luck babe. She opened for Olivia during her sour tour but didn't get any attraction until recently because she finally had music that people were able to connect with. I see people saying she owes her success to Olivia but she did it all on her own. It's her persona and upbeat songs that made her hit mainstream. She is authentically herself and doesn't seem like she's playing a “character”. She also is not afraid to stand out and represent queer people while continuing to pay homage to those before her. She deserves all the success. I will always say that those who take 10+ years to hit mainstream are better than those who have overnight fame.
We wouldn't be watching a video focusing on her if she didn't open for GUTS tour, but yes she has taken full advantage of that opportunity and is blazing her own path now. I think it's safe to say she's bigger than Olivia for the time being within people who closely follow music, just not the general public yet.
@@inmycomfychair to some extent I get it but she’s the only opener that got recognition because her music is so catchy and something we have me longing
Can I say as a fan she writes great pop songs that may have gay themes but are so well written and sung that mainstream audiences can recognize talent. Straight or gay you want to be a participant in her music because of her talent. I am sure the gay community is thrilled to have such a strong music icon to represent themselves. Its like when Lady Ga Ga hit it was a new pop star.
I admit it hurts a little not to remember the real OG of gay pop, for better or worse, who is Madonna, like her or not, the one who paved the way for many, including Lady Gaga, and came out in the worst period of LGBTQ+ visibility (80s-90s: AIDS epidemic), when no one had the courage to do so and was the first to work with gay and Black, Hispanic dancers and artists etc
it’s not about not remembering the ogs, it’s about a new generation of sapphic pop artists rising in gen z. we haven’t forgotten the past, but we need more relevant and fresh anthems.
@@burnt-croissants Yes that is clear but from the video it seems that the OG is Lady Gaga and in any case I noticed, being part of the lgbtq+ community myself, that instead in the new generations there is a total ignorance about who and what happened before and that paved the way for many, JoJo's statements are just an example of the total arrogance and ignorance and lack of humility of this
as a gay guy who also grew up with a christian family and attending church, chappell's lyrics are a 100% relatable. from the relationship with conservatism to my self-discovery sexuality wise, im completely in love with chappell's music and personality
I rly think Janelle Monae is always missing from these conversations. I'm totally not saying that she herself makes up for the lack of queer POC musicians in the mainstream but she's sooooo good and cool and queer and i love her. She's very popular but i don't see the queer community embracing her as a staple artist like the others you mentioned and i think thats a loss fr.
I heard of Chappell a few weeks before her Coachella performance. I'm happy for her blowing up but also cognizant that she's put through a lot of stress and anxiety for getting famous so quickly. Hope she has a good support network! Also yes, we definitely need more lgbt people of color get icon status!!! Not enough melanin around here. Cardi B was my fav for a while since she's Bi and Latina, but honestly it's so rare still to see Latine/spanish-speaking acts get enough attention in the English-speaking mainstream... Oh and Bad Bunny is still out there killing it and being super supportive of the queer community too, but he refuses to make his songs in English on principle, so very few English speakers have ever heard of him. The up and coming queer latinas like Kali Uchis and Lauren Jauregui are doing okay, but I rarely hear anyone talk abt them.
As an elder sapphic queer 🎉 so glad i found ur video because I've been SO JOYFUL hearing all this music i can relate to in a way i haven't been able to before... im grateful the youth ✨️ have this music and way to express themselves and know they arent alone.. i love Billie--- but i agree she isn't a queer icon yet- maybe she will become one as she grows... she's definitely a music icon but shes just starting her bi journey in the public eye... i look forward to what else is coming ❤
I think another factor into the rise of Chappell Roan is her image/style in contrast to the more toned-down, "clean girl" aesthetic. Back in the late 2000s-early 2010s we had a lot of artists who had this sort over-the-top & maximalist aesthetic (EX: Gaga, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, etc). But the rise of minimalism in the late 2010s has led to a decline in those aesthetics that people long for now. For example, I've been seeing people online (especially tiktok) talking about their disinterest in minimalism/clean girl earlier this year & Chappell showed up at the right time. Now Chappell Roan looks have been trending across makeup tiktok. Additonally, I feel that her style is one of the most distinct & memorable amongst the current generation of pop girls (imo, the Lady Liberty look is going down in the history books). To me, Chappell is well on her way to becoming a fashion icon & I love that she fully embraces those Mid-west drag aesthetics. Drag doesn't get enough credit for the level of artistry that's involved.
I was expecting a surface level conversation about "Chappell's lore" or whatever that everyone is doing, but this was such a deep and insightful video that I had to subscribe even though this is the first video of yours I've ever come across!
When you said you discovered Chappell by listening to Femininomenon on a Spotify auto-mix I SCREAMED. Literally the same song and the same way. I feel seen. We might be related lol
I discovered Chappell thanks to a review TikTok breaking down how beautiful her vocals are on Good Luck Babe. That's another point that should be in your video, her vocals are absolutely incredible plus there's a lot of nostalgic sounding music selections, which is contributing to her rise in a serious way
I do think she will be influential but I honestly don't think most people are talented enough to follow her lead - not even trying to be negative but her vocals and concepts are so unique and high level and her execution is clinical every time But I think it would be great if people did
Thisssssss. Her vocal technique is insane. The studio version of ‘Good Luck, Babe’ is legit challenging by pop standards. Her vocal flexibility too!! If she isn’t intentionally flipping between registers (impressively done itself), her passagio is seamless.
There will never be another chappell roan and I like it like that honestly. She is other worldly. She is to me how others feel about Sabrina or beyonce. Her personality, her style, her vocals, her lyrics, her sound, her honesty. Notice she's not as curated as them (no media training to my knowledge) and yet she's doing AMAZING. Authenticity always wins. Im sure this is affecting her mental health though.
She invested in her craft since she was a kid and used a lot of the potential she had. Thats hard to top for a lot of people, outside of her innate talent. Same could be said for a lot of sports etc too. Its a combination of innate talent but also beginning to work on a craft from a young age
I think too is so many artists are scared of going all out like she does. There's a big fear of "cringe" around, that stifles creativity from the worry that it "won't work" so many people don't try
my dad works nights so he listens to a lot of music during his shift and he’s so immersed into the culture and he listens to so much sapphic pop. he also genuinely enjoys karma by jojo siwa tho so
I saw Chappell live at gov ball and rly felt like I was watching a new Gaga and also I cried twice because of pink pony club and good luck babe. So ya I don’t think I haven’t become such a quick fan of someone since I heard szas CTRL or lil nas x montero. She’s an amazing performer and makes rly thoughtful music.
The thing about Chappell that is special is that you YOU as the listener feel like you found something so special that she is speaking directly to you. She feels exclusive. Especially as a lesbian, I've lived these songs. She's incredible. It's gay pop's time to shine
i love this whole video and i would just like to shoutout megan thee stallion who is openly bi and has specifically shown love to lesbians on stage recently!
Im still so shocked how famous chappel is now... ive been following her since naked in manhatten and its so surreal to see someone who was performing in bars suddenly headlining shows??? its crazy
Lady Gaga was my gay awakening and intro to queer subcultures. I feel like Chappell is a culmination of all of that. I am excited for Chappell’s rise to stardom and glad Gaga is also getting her flowers after being bashed for so long.
Some Less Well known Queer Artists of Color: Nxdia-Egyptian-Sudanese, she is a queer woman that makes Alt-Pop Alt-Rock type music Jazmin Bean-Filipino, they are a nonbinary person who does Pop-Metal and Alt-Pop I might add more but anyone can drop recommendations in the comments
Fucking love this vid- you break things down in such a gentle and sage way, never alienating or speaking for people. Feels like that's a rare quality these days!
The fact that she’s willing to be open and honest with her fans about this being a struggle to be shot into stardom makes me even more of a fan. I want to support this amazing, supportive, honest artist cause thats what i want more of in this world. Reality. We all struggle and need to start being more open about it cause i honestly think that would take a lot of weight and stress off the situations to help everyone move towards their better future and our better community. I hope she’s getting the support she needs and that there’s someone there for her
Loved this video ! I’m so glad Chappell Roan has been well received recently!!! I’m only left slightly confused by the difference between being lgbt and queer.. if anyone minds further elaborating
There have always been artists that were part of the lgbt community. Every generation with pop charts has several examples. Just off the top of my head, Elton John and Freddie Mercury were from my mother's era. Four Non-Blondes, Melissa Etheridge, Indigo girls were from when I was going up/a teenager. The current surge of popularity for so many is unprecedented and really rather cool. The ability to sing about their authentic feelings without innuendo or switching the gender in the songs is still relatively recent and also really cool. This is an exciting time for music, and I have made it a point, even being told that i will stop liking music that is new after like 30 years old to keep up with these new artists and they're honestly doing good work. People that stopped in their 20s or 30s liking new music are really missing out. And most of the ones like that I've sent Chappel Roan's music to have reacted favorably to her. I really want to see where the industry is in 5 years since 5 years ago was when Lil Nas X told the world he is gay.
my sister has been a chappell fan for years and when so blew up i was like OMG A QUEER ICON WHO I KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!! also i’m going to a troye sivan and charliexcx concert in october im so freaking hype
Very dissappinting of you to not mention Janelle Monae who is a black pansexual artist who's been here representing her sexuality and the LGBTQ+ community for YEARS longer than Victoria, the Dirty Computer album and the film along with it is as gay as it gets lol but great video.
I went and listened to some of her songs right after this video and realised that I recognise her voice from somewhere.... I went to my spotify playlists and there in one I created in 2021/2022 is her song "Naked in Manhattan"!!!! It was released in April 2022 and I added it in March 2022 I LOVED the song and was genuinely surprised that she had so little listeners. I do not remember how I found that song but gosh I overplayed it back then. Glad she is getting the recognition she deserves!!!
I think a lot of ppl see her appreciation of drag as performative is bc they have one idea of what drag is. Men dressing up as women. But drag is just a performance of gender. Idk if you’ve seen the dimension 20 dungeons and drag queens season but the Dm Brennen was talking abt the behind the scenes and costuming. Bob the drag queen said that the drag the queens do is what drag us to them and he needs to find what drag is to him. He didn’t dress up as a women but still explored gender in his own way. Idk but like I think if more ppl had a better understanding of drag as a performance of gender, and not just cross dressing I think more ppl would get what Chappel is doing
To me it has to be Boy George with Karma Chameleon. George Michael, Melissa Etheridge, even some Madonna could be good contenders for starting gay pop but the thing with Boy is he left no doubt he was speaking to another guy when going on about "You're my lover, not my rival." The others left out sex, pronouns, and other identifiable cues so unless you knew the artist swung a certain way you could easily think it was directed at the opposite sex.
If you love Chappell Roan I rlly rlly recommend Last Dinner Party They’re more Florence and the Machine like but they’re VERY sapphic and have great stage presence
I am really enjoying seeing all the success that Chappell is experiencing right now. At the same time, I feel like artists like Fletcher, King Princess and Josef Salvat are still being slept on and hope they experience this kind of a mainstream boom as well. Huge fan of Chappell though.

I honestly didn’t mind Jojo saying that (it was misguided and arrogant, yes, but not worth the ire) until I learned that she didn’t even write it 😭 like oh she didn’t create ANYTHING, let alone a genre that already exists, we can’t let this girl think she cooked
@@Leo2b-mw1gi …that’s literally what I’m saying? I’m saying Jojo didn’t invent gay pop, and that she didn’t even create a gay song, I’m agreeing with you, what’s the issue? 😰
I can be kinda slow to pick up on new artists just cuz the way I consume music, but when I played Chappell Roan's song "Good Luck, Babe!" I could immediately tell she was highly influenced by Kate Bush - & that's a high compliment, because her style is exceptionally unique & varied. Looking forward to hearing more of Roan's art
I very much hope that with the very real and very scary possibility of Project 2025 and the reality of rising homophobia and transphobia we get an extreme wave of unapologetic gay pop from multiple artists because I do not want homophobes or transphobes to be able to get away from us. We need more Billie, Chappell, Gaga, Troye, and artists of the sort.
i think indie pop is seperate from mainstream pop-POP ykwim? like they have very different sounds and while they are successful, they arent successful the same way chappell and other pop icons atm are booming.
@@idontownagoldfish Billie's music is pretty indie in aesthetics even if it's mainstream. I don't think the difference in sound between indie and mainstream pop is that meaningful. Any of the current indie pop artists could easily have a breakthrough hit that crosses over into the mainstream

Hard to tell, with the timing- she was definitely on her way up before that though! I think she would’ve seen a lot of success either way, it just happened much quicker thanks to that tour.
Not me being embarrassed to just find out TINASHE is queer?!?
I bet she has forgotten she's queer herself...just saying . because she never mentions it and sings about men .

Same! I was like whaaaaaaaaaa?

SAME I HAD NO CLUE?!
Also,
A lot of people separate their queer identity and their sexuality. When that is the case, we tend to center the cisgender and heteronormative artists who claim the LGBTQ community sexually but not in a way that centers queerness
Well put!
Ugh I love Janelle Monae!
MEG THEE STALLION QUEER?!
THIS PRIDE REALLU CANT GET ANY BETTER!
ALSO OMG I DIDN'T KNOW SHE JUST DROPPED THE ALBUM!
I’m just so happy to see Chappell get political in the midst of her rise. Calling out the White House when all eyes are on her is iconic behavior.
we’re getting a lot of great queer latina artists popping off rn young miko, villano antillano, kali uchis, lauren juaregui are a few i can think of off the top of my head, but we need more sapphic poc pop icons

Songs about self-exploration, poly attraction and desires, and just experiencing various expressions of pleasure through s-x, creativity, rewarding your own hard work, and ownership of one's own body
dirty computer is just as queer and even electric lady before they came out is pretty queer too
YES!
Janelle "motherfucking" Monaé is THE queer icon to me. She was there eay before anyone had the balls to be out and proud of her sexuality. I love her and she is one of the most creative people out there. I hope she comes out with something that will go mainstream.
YES! Her new album is FANTASTIC and I wish more people recognized her!
I like her too!
i know this is not an oppression competition, but arguably female queer representation has been the one we've been missing the most. it makes me so happy to finally see it: chappell, reneé, billie and victoria monét doing their thing. openly queer men have been around finding ways to be respected in the music industry: freddie mercury, elton john, david bowie, lil nas X.
but also, i hope that this phenomenon (or better femininomenon) does not lead to an overinvestment and capitalization on female sexuality, in a sense that i expect those artists to be able still to express themselves beyond their sexualities. ever since billie came out, ppl seem to be overinvested on it. let my girl be more than bi or whatever. let her talk to other women without sexualizing every word...
Her, and Janelle Monae have cemented themselves as icons in the genre but it's now the next generations turn to push to new heights so they aren't really mentioned in the new gen of sapphic pop stars
she's still a religion option on Her, so. maybe some people are just young
I think Hayley's been out of the limelight too long. A new album, some collabs, and she'd be back in the conversation.
i'm not 100% sure since i wasn't there when it happened and didn't see her post before she deleted it but apparently she supported Israel
She's definitely not Jesus lol
I LOVE CHAPPEL ROAN
Same!!!!

YES!
ive been OBSESSED with her since her tiny desk live!! mad performance and presence!! ❤
she’s amazing truly
DREAM GUEST ON MY PODCAST??
I don't even have a podcast but if Chappell Roan said she wanted to be on my podcast I'd start one immediately
😂😂😂
It really hurts to see the queer icons of the past decade being forgotten, ppl like Janelle Monáe, Hayley Kiyoko and Adam Lambert
Chappell just is absolutely bursting with queer joy and I love her for that
I think another factor into the rise of Chappell Roan is her image/style in contrast to the more toned-down, "clean girl" aesthetic.
I was expecting a surface level conversation about "Chappell's lore" or whatever that everyone is doing, but this was such a deep and insightful video that I had to subscribe even though this is the first video of yours I've ever come across!
i'm so happy that chappell is gaining commercial success after trying for so long, really just a reminder to keep going
When you said you discovered Chappell by listening to Femininomenon on a Spotify auto-mix I SCREAMED. Literally the same song and the same way. I feel seen. We might be related lol
also i feel like so many people still constantly forget gaga is bi 😭
Okay but let's please give Janelle Monáe her flowers
Discovered her back in mid-May and I’ve been obsessed ever since. Glad the rest of the world is catching on too.
Found her during the pandemic, proud of what she has achieved, it's like seeing a sister grow up
I discovered Chappell thanks to a review TikTok breaking down how beautiful her vocals are on Good Luck Babe. That's another point that should be in your video, her vocals are absolutely incredible plus there's a lot of nostalgic sounding music selections, which is contributing to her rise in a serious way
her tiny desk concert is so good. she’s a great performer
I do think she will be influential but I honestly don't think most people are talented enough to follow her lead - not even trying to be negative but her vocals and concepts are so unique and high level and her execution is clinical every time
But I think it would be great if people did
Fr
You need to talk about Omar Apollo, a gay icon who just released his new album 'God Said No' it's honestly breathtaking
my dad works nights so he listens to a lot of music during his shift and he’s so immersed into the culture and he listens to so much sapphic pop. he also genuinely enjoys karma by jojo siwa tho so

It's gay pop's time to shine
i love how doja, lil nas x, and chappell are fully brining camp back to mainstream pop!! it makes my gaga-obsessed little heart so happy 😊

Loved this video ! I’m so glad Chappell Roan has been well received recently!!! I’m only left slightly confused by the difference between being lgbt and queer.. if anyone minds further elaborating
yep, same, if anyone minds explaining, im all ears!
Your channel is so refreshing

I went and listened to some of her songs right after this video and realised that I recognise her voice from somewhere.... I went to my spotify playlists and there in one I created in 2021/2022 is her song "Naked in Manhattan"!!!! It was released in April 2022 and I added it in March 2022 I LOVED the song and was genuinely surprised that she had so little listeners. I do not remember how I found that song but gosh I overplayed it back then. Glad she is getting the recognition she deserves!!!
Spotify recommended Good Luck Babe to me a month ago and I'm never going back😂❤
I just stumbled upon her 15 minutes ago and was intrigued, now TH-cam is recommending me so much lore about her
I think a lot of ppl see her appreciation of drag as performative is bc they have one idea of what drag is.
As someone who kinda hates pop music and hasnt listened to it for years, chappel roans music has been stuck in my head this whole month
I've never heard of Chappell Roan before. For fans of Chappell Roan, which song would you recommend me to listen to?
Some good Chappell songs to start with in my opinion: good luck, babe!, casual, red wine supernova and california
My favourite is Naked In Manhattan!
Good Luck Babe and Pink Pony Club 🤍
To me it has to be Boy George with Karma Chameleon. George Michael, Melissa Etheridge, even some Madonna could be good contenders for starting gay pop but the thing with Boy is he left no doubt he was speaking to another guy when going on about "You're my lover, not my rival." The others left out sex, pronouns, and other identifiable cues so unless you knew the artist swung a certain way you could easily think it was directed at the opposite sex.
If you love Chappell Roan I rlly rlly recommend Last Dinner Party
They’re more Florence and the Machine like but they’re VERY sapphic and have great stage presence
I am really enjoying seeing all the success that Chappell is experiencing right now. At the same time, I feel like artists like Fletcher, King Princess and Josef Salvat are still being slept on and hope they experience this kind of a mainstream boom as well. Huge fan of Chappell though.
