Kiritsugu's eyes have life, he's a man with hopes of making a better world, not just a mindless killer. In his mind at least, he doesn't murder, he sacrifices, which is why he's so sad and afraid of doing that to his own wife, and why he breaks down after killing his surrogate mother. But he never gives up on the future he has in mind, so he does all these terrible things hoping that it will pay off some day. He's passionate and dedicated to his dream, and that's the basis of his dynamic with Kirei, a soulless husk of a man.
I guarantee you: everyone who knew Fate/Stay Night before watching Fate Zero started crying the moment they saw baby Illya's face. From that moment on we knew what we were in for with this anime...

i actually watch fate zero because i firstly thought that its a continuation of FSN 2006, and seeing Saber in it i really hoping that she get to reunited with Shirou as their final farewell in FSN really hit me hard. took me 2 episodes to realised that FZ is prologue to FSN
in the end things way even worse for them...... His daughter lived 10 years of hellish life, tortured, brainwashed haunted by ghosts. When Kiritsugu couldn't do anything about it no matter how many years he tried...... Their life is probably even more tragic than Kariya.. if it wasn't for Fate/hollow atraxia this series would traumatise me for a long time......

I don't know how many times I've rewatched this scene. I love it all. The silence of Kiritsigu, the dark colors in contrast of Iri's dress and her eyes, the snow storm outside... The positive tone of Iri's voice and the sadness in Kiritsugu's broken voice... Yuki Kajiura's melody... The camera angles...
Seeing this scene the first time means almost nothing but seeing it again after watching the whole series, this becomes one of the most emotional scenes of the whole franchise. I recently heard the fate/zero drama CD. iri was very inanimate when Kiritsugi first met her, she understood she would have to be sacrificed to create the holy grail, despite knowing that Kiritsugi broke her out of her she'll and showed her the world. Giving her the experiences of a lifetime, making her the sensitive and loving woman she is in this scene. heart breaking.
And that it why new fans should never start with Fate Zero. It's a prequel meant to be watched after Fate/Stay Night or else a lot of big emotional scenes go down the drain.

Fate Zero is amazing by itself, one of my the most favorite animes and Kiritsugu is my favorite protagonist ever after Natsuki Subaru. UBW and HF are watchable but I don't like them although Rin is great!
This one scene acts as a microcosm of the whole of Fate/Zero. Kiritsugu Emiya sacrificed everything on the hope and prayer that the Holy Grail could bring peace to the world, and in the end, it brought him nothing, and never could.
It's so heartbreaking... Illya was told that Kiritsugu killed Iri and she got insane from that lie and all the torture she endured. I don't know what they did to her on the Eiznbern castle but they probably think of her as some "special child" fuckkkkk Kiritsugu showed such a wholesome side when he was looking for the walnuts with Illya AHHHHHHHHHHH
I still feel the same thrill and the hurt in my heart, as painful as 9 years ago, because i watched FSN first i can't help but feel devastated when i see this very first scene of Fate Zero, and it still the same today.

Nah. Spoiler heavens feel: Avenger in the grail cursed him for not freeing it. For rejecting it. He hung in there as long as he could. When he heard Shiro say he will fulfill his dream, he could finally be at peace. So the curse killed him. He had taught Shiro everything he could, without turning him into the killer.
I can't think of any that are really similar to Fate, probably the closest would be Code Geass. There's lots of anime with good writing and more serious themes though e.g. Death Note, Monster, Steins;Gate, Psycho Pass ( written by the same person who did Fate/Zero ). FMA is cool but I only saw maybe 1/3, its got a lot of episodes. If you like FMA you might also like Hunter X Hunter. One of the first anime I saw was Rurouni Kenshin, thats good too. Overlord and maybe Goblin Slayer also are worth a look.

the moment before shooting he knows that he is going to reject the grail, he knows that the einzbern were not going to let him into the forest again, he tried several times but he knows that it is useless, so he stops trying and stays with Shiro, also believing that the war was over forever. Sorry if it is not understood I am still learning English :)

You mean in the Grail dream? Basically the Grail method for Kiritsugu's wish was killing everyone, however it was going to let his loved ones survive. However Kiritsugu's ideology has been to sacrifice the few to save the many, so in this case he rejected the Grail and killed Irisviel and Illya (not actually, just in the dream) to save the rest of the world
For anyone who still doesn't understand, he doesn't kill her. It's just illusion inside the corrupted holy grail like Genjutsu. The real Illya was still alive in Einzbern Castle, West Germany. Also by that time iri was already killed by kotomine.

These two are, in my opinion, the best relationship in the Fate franchise. Fitting that they are also in the best series in the Fate franchise.
