I owned two of these in the 1980's, none of them were new but they were a real bargain secondhand if you didn't mind the tappety engines. They were very comfortable for their time, and not at all slow for a family car. Mine were reliable enough, and I did all my own servicing at home as many people did in those days. My first one was a green S model, the second was the more luxurious GLS with electric windows etc. They did rust a lot, but to be fair so did most cars of the era.

Brings back memories of going with my dad to the Chrysler dealer in the centre of Coventry to pick up a dark red S in 1977.
Cool car, if you could live with the tappet noise, fouling plugs and the fact that the penny pinchers didn't think to give it proper rust proofing.
Having said that no Cortina could live with it on the road unless its one of the half dozen V6's they sold.

My dad had a top spec Alpine with all the toys and tbh it wasn't a bad car - it was roomy practical economical and went well. My dad kept it serviced and maintained regularly and there was no smoke etc.

Had two of the late model Talbot Alpines. Loved them both.
My kids used to call them the 'Rattily heap of Junk' but they both cars did the job as intended for many years.
The first one did over 175,000 miles before the garage refused to weld it anymore. It towed a caravan all over the country for holidays, towed a trailer to go bike racing and took me to work every day.
It did break down a few times but I was always able to repair it myself.
The second one was a two tone red with vinyl roof model. It looked really nice and had alloy wheels. Sadly, chronic rust took the car away from me before I could too many miles on it.
    Fond memories.

Noisy tappets and worn oil rings with just a few thousand miles on the clock. Yep, you could see - and hear an Alpine approaching from miles away! Mine burnt so much oil I never needed to change it. A pint of oil went in on every visit to the petrol station! LOL

was yours the 1300cc model or 1400cc ? we had a 1300cc one and engine sounded like a bag of bolts in a tumble dryer! seemed to go ok and didn't burn that much oil but yes you could hear it a mile away!

Ha ! Exactly the one I had @ 0:50 ! Rattled like a tin of marbles and rusted like it was dipped in sea water at the factory . did lots of shagging in it though , seats folded nearly flat , lovely . I bet my white arse going up and down matched the colour of the bumpers , great memories.

The Sunday World in Ireland tested cars with models, (who kept their clothes on!), for that very reason, and the Chrysler Alpine came out on top.

I seem to remember they were very popular in Spain.
I went to Benidorm in 1978-9 and they were all over the bleedin’ place.

These days manufacturers need high spec infotainment systems and adaptive cruise control to attract customers. In these simpler times you could steel a match in your competitors with nothing more than a rear fog light!

ha ha just remembered the tappets , it sounded like a bleedn taxi , the other great feature was mounting the distributor cap right at the front of the engine very low down so when it rained or you went through a puddle you were never really sure if you would make it home my that was fun ha ha

My Dad had a top spec black one, brand new. I borrowed it to drive into the town centre in Coventry and stopped at a set of red traffic lights. A drunk jumped into the car and asked me to take him to a city pub. WTF are you doing I said! He replied that he was sorry but thought it was a taxi!! Happy days ;-)

My uncle had a beige and brown vinyl roof model. You could here it coming a mile away as that pushrod engine had a very loud clatter. The beige gradually matched the roof colour due to corrosion. The narrator may be the ' winnebago man ' with a fake english accent - hence the expletive beeps.

Ja bei uns war es Chrysler Simca. Der 1308 war mein erstes Auto in der GT Ausführung. Rost ohne Ende. Schon als Neuwagen nach einem Jahr. Aber unglaublich bequem zu fahren. Bei 140 000 leider mit gerissenen Zahnriemen ein Totalschaden.

I very much doubt the average man (or woman) in the market for a Capri would be interested in the Alpine, or visa versa! About the only thing in common would be the rear hatchback (added to Capri in 1974).
Still, the Alpine managed to win the European Car Of The Year award in 1976 in front of the likes of the VW Golf (did not compare with that!) and BMW 3-Series.... what ever happened to those cars I wonder?
I do like the Alpine though (apart from those Mk1 noisy engines - truly agricultural)

He doesn't mention the massive rear sill you'll have to lig your suitcases over!
At the beginning & end, that looks like a pub in Coventry! Weren't these knocked toegther in Whitley, Ryton or Stoke Aldermoor? I think it was Whitley.
Time proved that these cars were crap.

Truly one of the worst cars I ever owned. Not bad to look at but almost *everything* went wrong with it!
By the way, notice how at the end of the"sales" video the narrator says "Gentlemen, we present the new Chrylser Alpine." Note that's "gentlemen" only...
