Jesus as God: Philo, Rabbi Akiva, the Apocrypha, and the Old Testament Background of this Confession

  • In this video, Chad Bird explores the writings of Philo, the early rabbinic controversy about "Two Powers in Heaven," the Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach, and Old Testament texts to help us understand "complex monotheism." How could a 1st century Jew, like Thomas, call Jesus "my God"? What is the significance of the Word, Wisdom, and Messenger traditions in early Jewish literature, and the Old Testament? We will see that all these texts are the background for believing in one God, and also in confessing that God's Messiah is truly divine.

    From what I see , people give the devil unlimited power , yet put God in a box and set rules on what God can and cannot do . God Is God his ways aren’t our ways . We would be smart to remember this

    Thank you. This was clear explanation of a complex issue. One stubborn question emerges however.. why the 3rd person of trinity is so underrepresented in Old Testament? We see all of these reference to the 2nd person but only a few to the Holy Spirit. Why?

    • @patriciamayhew6321
      @patriciamayhew6321 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because Jesus had not yet sent the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:” John 15:26 King James Version. Because the purpose of the Holy Spirit post Resurrection is to witness or testify of Jesus that He is the Messiah.

      think about the book called " revelation" ... well... the entire bible IS the "revelation"...
      in the OT, the Holy Spirit was not "revealed" as in the new testament....
      when it comes to the bible you will come to find many "parallels" within... one of the being the "revealing" of God Almighty to mankind... tis takes place over the OT and NT as a "whole" or
      a better word to describe this "revelation" would be as "ONE"!!!
      i hope this peaks your interest... i like to tell people that " its one thing to read the Word of God but its another thing to read the bible until, ... The bible...READS YOU BACK"!

    Like with the Angel of the Lord we see how the one who spoke to a person is a messenger, the God then Yahweh. We see the same with the messiah. The one to receive an everlasting kingdom is the messiah born of a virgin, the Son of Man, Yahweh is praised for his everlasting dominion. The one on whom is the Spirit of God is the messiah yet in Isaiah God is sending God with His Spirit, etc.

    • @malpercio123
      @malpercio123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep! They are one in the same! We actually see the Messiah and the Angel get blurred in the book of Isaiah where the servant of the Lord is the Arm of the Lord (53:1). The Arm is linked to the Angel in Deuteronomy 26:8 and a couple of other places (sorry I'll link them later when I have more time). The final point of blurring the Messiah and the Angel is in Malachi 3:1 where the Lord and the Angel (messenger) of the Covenant are blurred, however this is a messianic prophecy, and we know that this passage is directly fulfilled by Christ on the first Passover when He announced Himself the new temple.

    Koliko se ja razumem u teologiju, ono što je rečeno u Tori odnosno prijem Božje blagodati na sinaju, to se nalazi u Novom zavedu u vezi objavljivanja nama neznabošcima u Isausovo vreme. Sve je to znao Rabbin Savle i to je preneo iz mudrosti prijema tajni sa Sinaja u svoje poslanic e. Ništa tu nije novo u ono što danas Jevreji / Gospod da ih blagoslovi/ veruju tako da je pomirenje izmedju Jevrejskog naukovanja i hrišćanskog naukovanja potrebno. Samo oni koji su na prvom n ivou znanja to ne razumeju, a ima 4 nivoa znanja. Praksa je jedini kriterij istine i treba se truditi znati naravoučenije svakog teksta odnosno teološke norme. Prvi nivo je jezičko značenja teološke norme i to je za malu decu početničko naukovanje. Mnogo pozdrava i ja proučavam judejsku ideologiju Tore.

    From history we can see that it became popular among some (especially Gnostics) to personify or allegorize the attributes of God. The Word of the Lord, Wisdom, Logos, Reason, Power, Name, Glory, etc., were allegorized (personified) to seem to be other divine beings along with a transcendent God. This is not bible!

    Philo was not a Christian, correct? So why is he some kind of authority? It does not say that the WORD put out his hand and touch Jeremiah? Can you see that DR.? The Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth! Why is this not a simple, voice/word/heard of the Lord speaking? The word of the Lord is God's wisdom. Clinches everything for us? What is clinched? Justin? Really referring to the son? Justin states this, not the bible, correct? Would it be nice if the scriptures stated this? There it is! Another trinitarian trying to find the trinity in the bible. Again, plenty of triads in the bible, but this does not make Jesus, God. The evidence is in. Thomas, doubting Thomas no less all of a sudden give us the trinity/divinity that no one else mentioned? At least 40 years later after the Messiah's death? Justin also? Philo, a non-christian? Are these the authority on divinity? I think, Thomas clearly sees, the Messiah, Jesus, and the Father, God. No 2 parts of the Trinity from my point of view. I hope to hear an answer concerning where "the word put out his hand and touched, Jeremiah"?
