Ace Ventura 2. I know it's such a typical film to pick but it was a stepping stone to branch out to people in a humorous manner. And it's ok to be funny is what I got the impression growing up. Although in more "serious" manner, I loved the Truman show. Made me realize how bad or the downside of the world trying to control you in such a manner for their own benefit. And how your decisions were based on arranged plans. Really want to make your life whatever you want not what society wants.
Good retrospective but I think you really missed a step in not spotlighting Eternal Sunshine, which might be one of the his finest moment as an actor. The films a genuine masterpiece and he is a big part of that

Totally agree with you. I was waiting for him to talk about Eternal Sunshine, curious of what he thought of one of my absolute favourite movies. And he barely mentions it. Disappointing.

Both of them are legendary comic actors and brought in enormous box office. Both also went on to serious things that were further out of their wheelhouse. Dismissing "Kidding" and "Eternal Sunshine" to support your argument is frustrating and I disagree with your main premise. So to say people only want 90s Jim Carrey I think is like saying people only want Robin Williams from Good Morning Vietnam. There are very distinct differences in the roles both decided to play later in their careers so it seems like you're minimizing the work and talent required by the actors.

I really dig your career survey videos, and this one was a lot of fun! I'm in the minority that really, *really* loves the movie version of A Series of Unfortunate Events. I think if the studios had allowed the film to be darker--that is, if they had allowed *Carrey* to be darker--it would have been better received. Because he has some real menace in that performance that I wish would have been allowed to shine through more.
I liked that movie a lot, both Carrey and McGregor are great in it, but I think it's still a comedy in which he does most of the time his over-the-top usual. It's different because they gave him great material to do his thing.
You left off “The Majestic” a really great, Straight, and grounded dramatic roll by Carrey. I can’t help but think it was intentional, because it didn’t fit your thesis.
Yeah, this was the movie where he showed he could play the charming leading man in a romantic movie (if you ignore half of The Mask, outside of the occasional gag Stanley is one of his sweeter, more understated performances). But this video wanted to show him as a washed out comedian

Im a new viewer, just found this channel a week ago, and have enjoyed perusing the career videos. But this one baffles me. The choices are so strange. Eternal Sunshine gets a glancing mention and then a minute is spent discussing his performance in the Kick Ass sequel. No mention of I Love You Philip Morris, and I found the discussion of the Truman Show could have been done better. But I may just be biased there as it's a favorite movie of mine. I am just very confused. It feels like half a video, but it's 17 minutes long.
You (and everyone else) should definitely watch "Kidding." Carrey's character in that series is totally different from anything else he's ever played. It's really something special.
I lost respect in him a bit, after reading script, signing on, going through all pre-production, shooting, and post-production work... and being paid... Only then he publicly denounces it, refusing to promote it, and throwing everyone of his co-stars, and crew under a bus... only for some dubiously timed, shallow "moral" grandstanding.
Oddly enough, what I find most interesting was when you were talking about Hollywood trends in the 90's. Ever consider a segment about such trends and their history/development?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is my favorite. Plus they were the inspiration for To the Moon and Finding Paradise which are masterpieces, not just for video games but story telling in general.

As poorly received as it was by critics I feel like The Majestic is one of the most underrated of Jim Carrey's performances and kind of marked the point where you can see his transition into a role like Eternal Sunshine
I think _Kidding_ is the greatest performance in Jim Carrey's career. It is necessary to see at least the whole first season to truly appreciate it. Maybe -in general- the same applies to getting a grasp of the TV series; in my case just watching the pilot was enough. Great drama.
I have SUCH fond memories of watching Mask & Ace Ventura on repeat with a friend as a child. Also, Eternal Sunshine is one of my all-time faves & it always breaks my heart watching it
I love the mini documentary here on youtube about his paintings. they are killer and let's you see, even if only for a few minutes into his mentality now that he is older. even though his characters maybe seem the same, he has def. grown as a person which is all that truly matters. This review is terrible. Its hardly mentions Eternal Sunshine. It come off as a high school assignment. And its takes on Jim Carreys movies are really bad.
How the hell can you just gloss over Eternal Sunshine in like one sentence! That for me, is to this day what kept Jim Carrey interesting after a lot of mediocre comedies - apart from his memorable part in Kick-Ass 2. And yes, I also haven't seen Kidding so far... xD
Interesting fact: Jim carrey was supposed to Star as Howard Hughes in a biopic directed by Christopher Nolan. But the movie did not happen due to the fact that Christopher Nolan did not want to compete with Martin Scorsese.( both his movie and Scorsese movie we're supposed to come out in the same year)
You overlooked his cameo in "The bad batch" where he played a very unique character in the hermit, a grimy weird person travelling through the desert with a shopping cart, wordless, almost alien. A great performance, albeit short, that most definitely proves once more his acting chops.
Just saying the amount of times you say he is being more Jim Carrey than every is a bit annoying and also you glossed over eternal so hard that is one of his greatest movies
Carrey's role in Kidding is interesting to watch. In the show, he's a kid tv presenter in a similar to Mr Rogers, which Carreys heightened acting channels well into but it also leaves you feeling like the character can't seem to let go of that mask even when they're not on tv and grieving. It's a serious show that uses his odd energy to useful effect
This guy is a genius. That's why he can pull off doing the same schtick for decades and somehow still keep it fresh and entertaining. Just watch some of his promos for Sonic - he's sharp as a razor, always on the edge. And yes, he is very versatile, his drama attempts are more than just that - he got two Golden Globes for his roles in Truman Show and Man On The Moon, albeit he was always snubbed by Oscars, not even getting nominations for those two.
Utterly shocked by how little you had to say about Eternal Sunshine. That movie is absolutely brilliant and a classic. That aside, great video once again!
Harrison Ford made 3 cult movies in 25 months (and few days) which is also pretty amazing. -Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, 17 May 1980 -Raiders of the Lost Ark, 12 June 1981 -Blade Runner, 25 June 1982 And all of his characters became cult characters too (Han Solo was already it), not just the movies were BIG.
Carrey is a fantastic physical actor. The transformation from the uncomfortable, twitchy, unsure Stanley Ipkiss to the deliberate, expressive, bombastic Mask is really well done, you feel like the Mask has allowed Stanley to stop caring and just go wild. It's not just The Mask either - in Sonic as Robotnik he's very deliberate, with occasional expressive, uncontrolled movements when he's surprised, or saying something off the cuff, or he thinks he's alone. I feel he captures Dr. Robotnik really well.

The show in a really unique way captures the duality of Jim Carrey but you couldn't even give it more than a single sentence? Skipping over Eternal Sunshine is one thing but this too?
I'll be waiting for a Jim Carrey Redux review where you give his full breadth of acting more acknowledgement.

Im a new viewer, just found this channel a week ago, and have enjoyed perusing the career videos.
But this one baffles me. The choices are so strange. Eternal Sunshine gets a glancing mention and then a minute is spent discussing his performance in the Kick Ass sequel. No mention of I Love You Philip Morris, and I found the discussion of the Truman Show could have been done better. But I may just be biased there as it's a favorite movie of mine.
I am just very confused. It feels like half a video, but it's 17 minutes long.
You (and everyone else) should definitely watch "Kidding." Carrey's character in that series is totally different from anything else he's ever played. It's really something special.

Only then he publicly denounces it, refusing to promote it, and throwing everyone of his co-stars, and crew under a bus...

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is my favorite.
Plus they were the inspiration for To the Moon and Finding Paradise which are masterpieces, not just for video games but story telling in general.

As poorly received as it was by critics I feel like The Majestic is one of the most underrated of Jim Carrey's performances and kind of marked the point where you can see his transition into a role like Eternal Sunshine
I think _Kidding_ is the greatest performance in Jim Carrey's career. It is necessary to see at least the whole first season to truly appreciate it. Maybe -in general- the same applies to getting a grasp of the TV series; in my case just watching the pilot was enough. Great drama.

I love the mini documentary here on youtube about his paintings. they are killer and let's you see, even if only for a few minutes into his mentality now that he is older. even though his characters maybe seem the same, he has def. grown as a person which is all that truly matters. I'll always love this guy.

I don't believe you skip 'kidding' entirely, in my opinion is Jim Carrey's most interesting role - I think it kind of sum up his interelly life.
That tv show no one heard about is called Kidding and it’s his best dramatic performance in years, and the show its airing its second season RIGHT NOW!!! Honestly everyone should be praising him and the show.

This review is terrible. Its hardly mentions Eternal Sunshine. It come off as a high school assignment. And its takes on Jim Carreys movies are really bad.
His show Kidding is criminally underrated.
How the hell can you just gloss over Eternal Sunshine in like one sentence! That for me, is to this day what kept Jim Carrey interesting after a lot of mediocre comedies - apart from his memorable part in Kick-Ass 2. And yes, I also haven't seen Kidding so far... xD
I was hoping you'd talk more about Eternal Sunshine. It's one of my favorite movies of all time.
Interesting fact: Jim carrey was supposed to Star as Howard Hughes in a biopic directed by Christopher Nolan. But the movie did not happen due to the fact that Christopher Nolan did not want to compete with Martin Scorsese.( both his movie and Scorsese movie we're supposed to come out in the same year)
You overlooked his cameo in "The bad batch" where he played a very unique character in the hermit, a grimy weird person travelling through the desert with a shopping cart, wordless, almost alien. A great performance, albeit short, that most definitely proves once more his acting chops.
Just saying the amount of times you say he is being more Jim Carrey than every is a bit annoying and also you glossed over eternal so hard that is one of his greatest movies

Carrey's role in Kidding is interesting to watch. In the show, he's a kid tv presenter in a similar to Mr Rogers, which Carreys heightened acting channels well into but it also leaves you feeling like the character can't seem to let go of that mask even when they're not on tv and grieving. It's a serious show that uses his odd energy to useful effect
Your bias against Jim Carrey shows a lot. You talk about a guy like hes a drummer of Nickelback
This guy is a genius. That's why he can pull off doing the same schtick for decades and somehow still keep it fresh and entertaining. Just watch some of his promos for Sonic - he's sharp as a razor, always on the edge. And yes, he is very versatile, his drama attempts are more than just that - he got two Golden Globes for his roles in Truman Show and Man On The Moon, albeit he was always snubbed by Oscars, not even getting nominations for those two.

Carrey is a fantastic physical actor. The transformation from the uncomfortable, twitchy, unsure Stanley Ipkiss to the deliberate, expressive, bombastic Mask is really well done, you feel like the Mask has allowed Stanley to stop caring and just go wild.
It's not just The Mask either - in Sonic as Robotnik he's very deliberate, with occasional expressive, uncontrolled movements when he's surprised, or saying something off the cuff, or he thinks he's alone. I feel he captures Dr. Robotnik really well.
