you are correct and I am wrong oh good. I'm interested in following this show but the first two episodes had me worried I wouldn't get any answers till the finale.
It's so hard to watch for an anime only. Events are happening so fast and may not be in chronological order. It's hard to tell who is who. I don't know if it's the way the original source is done or it's only done this way for the anime. Currently I am only able to distinguish 7 characters. 1. BoogiePop/Miyashita, 2. The main male character(forgot the name), 3. The class Rep glasses girl, 4. The Skip class girl Kirima Nagi who sometimes wear a latex suit and is a badass, 5. The Skip class girl's friend who showed kindness to an alien(Echoes), and end up getting killed, 6. The antagonist male character who almost got killed by the alien but ended up working with the Alien. 7. The Alien - Echoes, who is a white haired male but can transform into a girl. her name was Kusatsu or something. And she hands out pills to other girls. She eats people by the way. It's probably better to binge watch in one go because I'm gonna forget everything by the next episode.
Totally digging the anime right now. Watched episode 3 and a lot of things now make sense. Its one of those anime which are better understood when binge watched. So i will binge watch it when it ends.
Thank you, chibi. You are providing a great service to me. I would have given up on or never watched several series that I now love if it wasn't explained by you. BoogiePop being a prime example. I saw both episodes and could not wrap my head around it. I decided I would rewatch from episode one once three came out. Serial Experiments Lain is absolutely legendary. Along with Paranoia Agent and some might say Boogiepop, Hell Girl and Another, they make up few of the anime that do justice to the horror/psychological genre.

The still frames background is in fact the style of the animators of the studios that are responsible for that part specifically. And they have made appereances in every quality shows these past few years. Also the art doesn't look that clean bc of some problems with the original illustrator of the Ln that complained in mid production also you will see that each episode will have a different vibe of animation bc of the multiple talented animators that are coming in. In my opinion people said poor quality animation or as some say art style but in fact that kind of animation fits the story so fuckin good and boom keep an eye in this series plus it will have 18 eps (I know we don't see this number of eps that often but that's what I am telling you this anime is a special case) oh yeah you saw the motion of that police in the first ep the movement in each frame is insane for a scene not that important imagine what would happen later...
Has anyone watched the anime of 2000? A very interesting series. It can get confusing from what I've seen, but the feel of the series with the way the music is really gives you an air of mystery and intrigue. I look forward to where this goes and how it plays out. :)
@@tribeking84 yeap. Watched 2 eps. I thought it was... fine but I can see why people would think it's bad in the short term. Not really much that made me want to see more just yet. Might pick it back up when stuff finally goes down.
I cheked Just because her Smug Face caught my interest since last year when the Song by MythAndRoid was presented, and since then her Smug Face captivated me.
I feel like a lot of people arent gonna give it a good chance because its not chronological and there is no visual queue when a flashback or jump forward is happening, that can make it confusing but if you pay close attention you can piece it together and it makes sense. The only thing that I didn't like so much is that they didn't really tell you that about a month past(the boyfriend was coming back to the roof for that whole month im guessing) when boogiepop says bye at the end of ep 1, while ep 2 makes this more apparent(i guess?) the anime only watchers could get a bit of hint at least, maybe through slightly better dialogue/wordplay. Anyway I got big hopes cause I love mystery anime especially in an urban city setting + its made by madhouse + the ost is g̶o̶n̶n̶a̶ ̶b̶e̶ godlike (kensuke ushio)

@SoulReaper 85 As Dave said, Carlos is proven right by you not knowing. Though personally I don't remember most of their names yet as I'm just generally bad with names and especially in anime and such where they're not really simple like Dave. But also as Carlos explained Kamishiro is the red (it was red right? Reddish orange?) headed girl who was friends with the girl in front of her computer (who's also a latex monster hunter bad ass I guess), the one who got herself suspended by bringing smokes to school. She was killed and eaten by the Manticore in episode 2.
The OP of Boogiepop is TOO awesome, even for Myth&Roid standards. 27th Feb for the full version... Also, the animation was kinda flaky, considering the studio is the powerhouse Madhouse.
In the Japanese the title was "Boogiepop wa warawanai" which translates loosely as "Boogiepop doesn't laugh". I've seen "Boogiepop and Others" in the English version of PV and in the title of one of the light novels though. I think both are fine.
@Joshua Moolman Boogiepop Phantom was an original anime adaptation nearly 20 years ago which wasn't based on the light novels (or rather, it didn't get its story from them) from what I understand about it.

This show reminded me of Baccano! in terms of the way it was set up, I feel like the scene from ep1 with Keiji and Boogiepop saying goodbye on the roof is from the end of the series when all is resolved
7:38 Have you seen "Boogiepop Phantom" ? It is almost totally shot in a sepia tone filter , and is very strange to the eye , especially to modern fans. BUT that , and the realistic same-ish character designs , were all done on purpose.
10:50 I think you might be referring to Nagi Kirima ? Who is not a "boogiepop" in any way , she just has a savior complex , like Batman. ALSO , in one of the side manga , Boogiepop is indeed a kind of mantle that can be passed form person to person , but still only one at a time. And even then , I'm not 100% sure that this side manga is canon.
Why the start is confusing is cause, even in the novel (even though the anime cuts a LOT of stuff) it was told in a way where 5 character is the narrator, and they all don't know the full context of the story. We're put in their shoes here, discovering stuffs along as they explained their part on the story. So we don't get all the info from the get go.
I remember Boogiepop Phantom was confusing AF when it first aired stateside. Had to read to up on the events prior to the the series to be able to actual appreciate it. Is this based off the first light novel?
I mean, it's a 90's Light Novel, so sure it's a classic :P. Goddamn opening is amazing though. I do have to disagree on one thing, and it's that the animation looks bad, or the backgrounds are lazy. I have not noticed a single thing to pull me out of immersion. If anything, there are a few sequences that looks amazingly good, though specially in the opening. Even though I literally feel like Overlord III's last few episodes' animation was worth of the realm of shadows, the sub 4.0 rated anime on MAL. Imma enjoy TF out of this.
I remember watching the original Boogiepop Phantom, it was nice. Back when we had to download each half of the episode and it was Realplayer we watched it on.
Boogiepop wa Warawanai (2000) was even more mysterious than Boogiepop wa Warawanai (2019). The 2000 anime was a sequel to the Boogiepop and Others light novel (1998) and live action movie (2000). The live action movie itself was not released in the West until 5 years after the anime was available, so viewers simply had NFI what was going on and had already happened. From what I can tell, the 2019 series seems to be incorporating both Boogiepop and Others (1998) and Boogiepop wa Warawanai (2000). It's actually showing us what is happening with Echoes, Manticore, and Kirima (albeit achronologically), whereas Boogiepop wa Warawanai (2000) only alludes to them as already having happened in passing. Maybe it's because it's the second (first?) time round for me, but BPW (2019) is nowhere near as confusing as BPW(2000) was to me.
While i'm glad Naoko narration lighten me about this story and seeing her personality charm my heart, and then she die... I-i am... not shocked, you're shocked....
Got through the whole first novel in 3 episodes. Still missing the yin-yang collar. And the still frames and blank faces are on purpose. They did the same kind of thing in Boogiepop Phantom. It's symbolic of most of the world not mattering and just being a backdrop.
I personally really liked these two episodes, and I'm looking forward to the next episode. All the music is really awesome too which really adds to it. btw maybe give Egao no Daika (The Cost of Smiles) a shot. I know you said you were going to skip it but you only read half the summary and I think it might potentially be an interesting watch. I think they are just making things look all happy at first so when the serious stuff happens, it will hurt. The first episode is mostly build up so I think people will be able to tell next episode if they should continue or not.
Was the jumbled chronological order really necessary? It just ends up being harder to get introduced to characters, remember who is who (really same-y looking) and wrap your head around all the supernatural stuff in it while keeping track of where what's happening on screen fits in the timeline. Maybe it's just not for me tho :/
I'm liking the series so far. Its...different and that good! But i have to say Madhouse looks like they are struggling production wise. It makes me wonder if was good thing that JC Staff took over production for OPM. Looking forward to Episode 3!
The first two episodes didn't leave a great impression on me but still gonna continue watching. I did realize during the 2nd episode of the nonlinear story telling and later pieced the events together. It's obvious how it can throw people off but I'm confident it will get better. The OP was fantastic Myth & Roid at it again.
Myth & Royd did the Opening so of course it's good. Also yeah, as I was watching this, I totally saw that the character designs looked very similar to Parasyte. Even the school uniforms are very alike the Parasyte student uniforms.
I am interested in the show but I think the best way to understand the show like this is to binge it. Therefore I will try not to watch it every week and wait until all episodes are out for the season
I can certainly see why people would like it but like you said it leaves you with alot of questions so it's hard to get hyped or get the appeal in my opinion. I'm not the kind of person who likes to think too much when watching an anime
So let me give my thoughts on this. I watched the original today (Boogiepop Phantom), it was very psychological and tense. I loved the themes, however, it was putting me to sleep because the pacing of it was very slow along with the dark environments (the anime is super dark). I like the new series a lot more, visuals and audio (as expected) far outrank the original and keep me woke af. Character interactions, drama, relationships are all built up well and the psychological aspects remain relevant throughout each episode. Yep! Lain was my first ever anime boxset........I felt an immediate connection.
It did feel a bit weird, but I felt like all the questions it was asking were being answered like... near immediately. Like I was intrigued by "Oooooh who's this man-eater monster!" Me: Sooooo, like a stereotypical secret organization then? Anime: Mhmm Me: Right... The alien as at least interesting right? Anime: OH! He can only say things he's heard people say! That's cool! Me: Riiiiiight, so it's bumblebee? Anime: ... No, shut up and love my show, it's weird and mysterious. Me: But... You cleared up like 90% of my questions within 2 minutes of giving them to me. Anyway, I'm gonna try and carry it on but it seems... clonked to me.
Nova 98 - while true you seem to have missed the context of the comment which is referring to the character's physical bodily appearance... which is female.
it also reminds me of durarara where there is not actual main character, things are out of order, and a lot of things are going on at the same time, like mysteries, crimes, supernatural, science, magic
So this begins Anime 2019

The Myth and Roid op and the ost for the anime were 🔥honestly I was hooked
So this is like higurashi.Questions in the first season...
Answers in the second season.
Very good start. A bit confused but interested to say the least
While i'm glad Naoko narration lighten me about this story and seeing her personality charm my heart, and then she die...
I-i am... not shocked, you're shocked....
Bro I was so confused. I went and read paragraphs on Reddit giving the chronological order of events.
Trivia: Kaori Shimizu voiced both Lain and Boogiepop (in Boogiepop Phantom).
Yes! Finally cant ! So happy you liked it
Got through the whole first novel in 3 episodes. Still missing the yin-yang collar.
And the still frames and blank faces are on purpose. They did the same kind of thing in Boogiepop Phantom. It's symbolic of most of the world not mattering and just being a backdrop.
It’s 2am and I like your vid keep up the good work
I personally really liked these two episodes, and I'm looking forward to the next episode.
Sounds very interesting... I must watch it now!
It’s out? And 2? Woaaa
Holy shit they did it. This is my second favorite novel!
"honestly this first episode and second episode remind me of Serial Experiments Lain"
...

good start for a good series
Opening of The Year
If boogiepop inspired nisio isin(creator of the monogatari series). I have high hopes for this. Can wait for the next episode
I'm liking the series so far. Its...different and that good! But i have to say Madhouse looks like they are struggling production wise. It makes me wonder if was good thing that JC Staff took over production for OPM. Looking forward to Episode 3!
Thank you for the explanation!!!
Shield Hero preview episode 1 is also out in gogoanime wepsite.
One of the best intro music I've heard in the past year. Only rivaled by Jojo's "Fighting Gold"
Myth & Royd did the Opening so of course it's good. Also yeah, as I was watching this, I totally saw that the character designs looked very similar to Parasyte. Even the school uniforms are very alike the Parasyte student uniforms.
Boogiepop never answers
It already has an anime series name 'Boogiepop Phantom'
The osts are good af
I really want to watch this, but of course, my CR premium subscription isn't working right now
Sounds like it's a series that you need to wait until it's finished and binge watch.
Manyfist yeah I might do that as well
That actually sounds like a good idea, never considered this for anything unless I find it after it's already like mostly through.
no idea whats going but i am interested. it gets kinda confusing with the timejumps/flashbacks but so far i like it.
Did someone else noticed the Boogiepop male split personality whit the Shiki/SHIKI split personality of Kara no Kyoukai?
So after watching the 2 episodes I realized why they released both at the same time
A Strange but interesting series so far..
yeeeah animeYoungin !!!
I agree bro. Just finished episode 18 and there are still some unanswered questions for me lol
i have not seen an anime that does the "in media res", this is very interesting
Anime of the year.
Op of the year.
Madhouse the powerhouse is one of my favorite studios .
Somehow Boogiepop reminds me of the dancin' smug kid from a videogame called "A Hat in Time"
I am interested in the show but I think the best way to understand the show like this is to binge it. Therefore I will try not to watch it every week and wait until all episodes are out for the season
*WINTER* of anime 2019
This adaptation is very easy to understand and follow compared to the original adaptation.
I enjoy the first 2 episode, never expected would be that dark
They probably spent a lot of budget on animating the fighting scenes etc; the PV was very good background animation and composition.
2 episodes and the confusion is still crawling around
It did feel a bit weird, but I felt like all the questions it was asking were being answered like... near immediately. Like I was intrigued by "Oooooh who's this man-eater monster!"
Boogiepop anime 3 minutes later: "Hey 'man-eater' is a reference to the manticore from greek myth"
Me: Cool but what *is* she! That's the imp-

Me: O-oh... But why did she give that one girl the drugs though! That's a big my-
Anime: She infected her in an attempt to create a enslaved group of people to help her hunt/fight/defend herself from the super secret organization!
Me: Riiight, well this organization might be something interesting like from Ajin, wonder about tha-
Anime: It's a seedy secret government funded organization doing research on aliens.
Me: Sooooo, like a stereotypical secret organization then?
Anime: Mhmm
Me: Right...
Boogiepop(the girl) looks like the girl in hat in time x)
I KNEW I SAW HER SOMEWHERE LOL
Nova 98 - while true you seem to have missed the context of the comment which is referring to the character's physical bodily appearance... which is female.
it also reminds me of durarara where there is not actual main character, things are out of order, and a lot of things are going on at the same time, like mysteries, crimes, supernatural, science, magic
Winter servings looks good.
the man talking to bugipop is the same person who is manipulating the manticore right?
