This was the first high def camera I bought! Still have it and use it to this day! I soon graduated to a Panasonic AJ-HPX2000
I got the same camcorder from an auction last autumn. It cost maybe 180€, so not too bad. The real hassle was getting a P2 card, a battery, and a charger, which took ages to find. I'm not even a skateboarder, so one might wonder why not just get a decent modern DSLR that has a better sensor, better low-light performance, way better convenience factor, higher resolution, better battery...
Well, for starters, I thought that even with these obstacles, something that was like 5000€ 20 years ago, MUST be of better build quality, than something new below 500€. And I was correct. I love the rugged build quality of the camera, and the huge amount of hands-on controls.
Second point was the feeling of using a real heavy camcorder, that actually feels like something made for the function. (An added benefit is appearing a lot more professional and appealing to someone who wants an event to be recorded).
Thirdly, the small amount of space forces me to actually pay attention to what I record, since I either have to delete most of it, or then backup them to a laptop through a USB.
Fourthly, the image quality: Yeah, it's not 4K and it's not that good for low light. But it does look incredibly good, especially with the right settings. 480p shot on this will always look better than 4k shot on a smartphone.
Also, did you know much of Jackass 2 was shot on AG-HVX200?
it's the camera used for the first REC movie ! A good one. Thanks for your review, it was a pleasure.
I some some footage graded and the footage looked amazing. The colors looked comparable to modern 4k sir
31:00 how did the dog know to bark on beat?
sweet video. Id love to see some mini dv test footage from it too
I’ll be putting out some mini dv test footage from it this week. I was going to add it into the review but it was already a 30 minute video.
ayyy sick thank you! and yeah that makes sense lol. @@brandoncameracollection
its not worth it. p2 is the only good way to record outta it. Solid camera, sits on my shelf these days
Where did you buy this from?
Mercari
is it actually possible to send the files from p2 cards to the sd card within the camera? or is the sd card there just for saving scene files?
I think I read on either b&h photo or videomakers.com and hat you could
SD is only for scene files, but you can hook the camera up via USB and transfer P2 data. There’s a menu setting that you have to change to put it in USB mode, and then when you turn it on, you press the little black button to switch to media viewing mode. Once in that mode, press/hold that same black button until it switches to USB transfer and the drive will appear on your PC.

I just got a mint 30 hour hvx 200 interested?
Depends on your price and what it comes with
Still selling?
@felixqvist6714 I sold it shortly after this video came out
@@felixqvistI have one. I’ve been in possession of this camera since the day it was bought brand new and the miniDV has NEVER even had a tape in it. It has a 16GB P2 card installed in it works perfectly. I also have the external Ikan monitor with composite input, 2 batteries + charger (not sure how much life is left in them…) and a 100GB focusrite FS-100 drive that connects directly to the camera via firewire for longer recording sessions. The focusrite drive’s battery is shot, but it still works with the power supply. I also have a diesel tripod and a teleprompter that was bought specifically for the camera. I also still have the remote control for it and the battery charger comes with an adapter that plugs into the camera’s battery slot that allows it to be line powered.
This setup was well over 10K when it was bought and it has been barely used outside of a corporate environment. These days, I run a woodworking business and this camera being in the shop would probably be disastrous with all of the saw dust etc. I’d be willing to sell it or trade the whole setup for a half decent DSLR setup that can shoot 1080 video. I do a lot of photogrammetry, so something with a macro lens included would be ideal.
