    I direct-planted a long row of Tuscan (Dinosaur) Kale early in the spring. Something attacked the seedlings and the whole row wilted and died. I thought that planting in flats might be a better idea, but I had missed my opportunity this year. Then I watched your expert video and when it was said: "I always plant them too soon. Who really wants to eat kale in July?" I lit up! Of course! So, tonight I will start my flats... and in a month transfer them to the garden. It will be a lovely autumn with lots of fresh Tuscan kale! Thank you very much!

    Hi Tim, we are using Seamungus seaweed and poultry manure feed. Seamungus is simply the best organic product for top dressing or giving a boost when planting out. It's made from composted free range poultry manure and sustainably harvested seaweed and acts as a slow release fertilizer for over three months

    I just planted some land-raced kale chou moullier (walking stick kale) by direct seeding this afternoon. One tiny pinch to about 6 foot of row. I know I'll have to thin and transplant in about a month, but that's okay with me!
    I do permaculture, and this is going to be a canopy and a living trellis for a telephone pea crop that is growing in the same place, with an understorey of Chinese Edible Chrysanthemum (hopefully the pyrethroids will keep the cabbage moths away!)
    Thank you for this video. I was unsure as to the germination times of these seeds. It's nice to know they germinate vigorously and grow quickly!

    Nice video and quick growing Kale. I planted seeds a few weeks ago along with beets spinach and a few other vegetables. I have a few sprouts but don't think it is the Kale yet. Surprised as I live in Florida and it's pretty mild with highs in the 70s lately. Could it be too hot to germinate? Once you planted in the ground I didn't see any kind of weed barrier. Here in Florida, within a week there'd be tons of weeds filling in the bare spaces immediately. How did you manage this?

    I have a bed of red russian kale, seeded last fall and has been producing constantly. I admit to simply cutting the plant to the ground when harvesting - they have good roots and regenerate just fine, growing thick clumps of leaves. It doesn't seem 'damaging' to me, it's working quite well.

    Not 100% sure about growing in your environment. Over here in Ireland kale grows quite easily. Almost no care is required because these are one of the strongest and most disease resistant of all vegetables. Remove yellowing leaves which will appear round the base of plant. Keep the weeds under control with regular hoeing.

      Justgivemethetruth The manure from the poultry (and in this case some decomposed seaweed) compressed into small pellets you can use as organic fertiliser in your garden.

    How often do you water when germinating and then growing out in garden?

    • @Quickcrop
      @Quickcrop  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +AdamOutdoors Hi Adam, it depends what the climate is like where you live. When germinating plants the compost should be moist but not soaking. Young plants should follow the same rule but keep them on the dry side as they will develop a better root system searching for the moisture. Kale is a member of the cabbage family so will prefer moist soil to thrive but is more hardy than most so will tolerate some drying out. I hope this helps and thanks for watching! Andrew

    My kale is about 2 monts but the size look like 5 weeks. What is the problem? How to choose the good seed? I do organic. I grow with full sunlight about 6 hours

      You need to feed your brassicas with a good nitrogen based fertilizer.

    Can't you just remove the leaves with the caterpillar eggs and let them have one leaf? I like the butterflies.

    Do you need to protect the small kale plants from birds. I started gardening 3 years ago the first year everything went well but the last 2 years the birds have become a major nuisance. They attack and rip out small plants in my veg plot. Last year I had to start my broad beans again after they destroyed all my plants after planting out 😡

      There is no point filming the same scene repeatedly.

    Well if you live Hawaii and you have a cloche over your plants, then you probably roasting them alive. Cloches are like mini ovens.
