- Kale is one of those vegetables that some people think they don't like and its usually because they have only had store bought kale. There are hundreds of kale varieties out there with delicious flavors, light bitterness, amazing colors, and textures. I finish this video up with a simple kale salad to give you some ideas on how to use it!

Salad Dressing Recipe:
Rice wine vinegar
Sesame oil
Chinese 5 spice
Black sesame seeds
Sea salt
🔥 the Chinese 5 spice would add a wonderful dimension to it
I grew Russian Red for the first time this year and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite.
Also, I save my kale stems by chopping them into 3rds and putting them in a freezer bag. Then I use them whenever i make smooties.

Kale, especially curly kale, is a Dutch national dish. If you live in an area without frost: put it in the freezer and it will get a lot sweeter! It is really nice with potatoes and bacon🍀.

I always thought kale tasted bad, but I had a bowl of kale prepared fresh from a local farmer and I totally fell in love with it! I just sowed my Halbhoher Kale 8 days ago! I’m looking forward to harvest and my first bowl!

I hated kale until I grew it myself. I grew lacinato and red Russian because my kids thought they looked cool. I was blown away at the flavor and will always grow kale now.

Kale is a must for my small garden, love it!! Sauteed in some sesame oil with pork and leek dumplings, yumm
Love all your varieties, I blanch and freeze my Kale, and then I can use it all year..Pick it all at once and prep and cook, some freezer tubs and it's so easy.
We love dino kale. I grow two 4x8ft beds of just kale. We use it in soups and smoothies mostly. So yummy! Love seeing your dogs running around in the background having fun.

Not a chef haha, but I have always enjoyed food and cooking, I have worked in an extremely limited capacity in a small kitchen for a short time but it was for deli foods so not really chef haha.

Homegrown kale is a completely different vegetable. Also each kale is different. I actually love each of the 3 he grows.

Camr back a second time to learn about kale in the SD. Growing and this time It finally clicked this is a Biennial now I know something new. Plant's that flower the second year!!!😅
I have the hardest time growing kale. I container garden and Im not sure what im doing wrong. Im envious of your beautiful kale and cucumbers! Also loved seeing your dogs running around the garden! too cute!

Might just need more mulch and water. As someone else mentioned a little shade, especially from afternoon sun, goes a long way
Kale is growing better than anything else in my winter garden here in Queensland, Australia. Red Russian is a fav for me too. I really like pan frying it in oil, garlic and chilli flakes. Thanks for the recipe!

Aphids DECIMATED my kale. I have had some success in the cooler months with Siberian Kale. I look forward to learning more.
Aphids seem to go through cycles throughout the year. Keep your kale healthy and if it becomes infested with kale, either keep it as a trap plant (for some reason, there are always plants with aphids and plants w/o aphids), or you can strip the infested leaves (feed them to fish, chicken or compost them or wash them thoroughly). The stem will grow more leaves that are free of infestation.
This happened to me too- on a two year old plant . I stripped everything and it is slowly coming back. So disappointing when this happens !

I love kale. I used to be sick all the time until I started drinking kale juice. It has been 10+ years. Age > 50, my doctor is wondering why I am never sick anymore. Doctor said that I am in great health, perfect blood work, and I will live forever young. They don't believe me that kale is like medicine. I started growing Russian Kale 2 months ago. She's gotten big and healthy. I harvested her last month, and now she's ready for another harvesting! Love Kale. I am looking for the other varieties at the plant store. I will plant my whole backyard with KALE!!

Maybe this sounds weird, but I just love having kale growing in my garden. Last year we didn’t eat much of it (I didn’t know how to use it/laziness), but I think I’ll always grow it anyway because of how easy it was, hardy it is, and lovely!!

I’ve grown Russian Red kale, Nero di Toscana and Thousandhead kale. That last one got huge. My girls make kale chips and a vegetarian soup with most of the kale. Happy gardening Jacques
Thousand head is on the list of ones I want to try! Nero Di Toscana is a great lacinato type!
@@jacquesinthegarden Thousandhead can get huge. My hubs got me an insane amount of flower and veggie seeds from Baker Creek, might still have some seeds. If you can't find any I'm a very sharing person. Happy gardening Jacques.

Last year Harlequin bugs, cabbage white butterflies, and Japanese beetles ate my kale, Bok choy, mustard greens, turnips, and cabbage. This year I netted most of them and now I have more than I can eat!😄🥬

I just ordered cabbage, garlic, kale, and pepper seeds to start indoors once my greenhouse is done. The cabbage and kale were for the ckicks, but have some hope that I, too, can eat them on occasion.

I’ve got some kale in my raised bed. Started from seed and the seedlings are just about an inch tall now. We’ve had a very cool, wet spring here in Oregon. I hope to see a harvest this year! 🤞🏼
The large Russian kale leaves make great cabbage rolls, a quick dip in boiling water to wilt them then fill roll and cook in my instant pot

I wish it got even colder, we get touched by the lightest of frost but I can't imagine how much better it can even taste.
