A big thank you for this channel. It's a thorough look at life "back home". I discovered this channel this week while sitting on my couch in Georgia. It helped get me through a rough week with the flu. It was fun to reminisce, see what has or hasn't changed about my hometown, and show my city bf all about life "back home". Thank you, thank you! 🖤

I didn't know Delbarton was such a pretty place, and the people were nice and friendly. It's good that they preserved the cool, old bridge, and I hope they have preserved some of the old mining machinery to be put on display at some of the trail heads at some time in the future. I enjoyed seeing the machines on display at the Chief Logan State Park. There were thousands of machines such as coal loading machines, continuous miners, undercutting machines just to name a few in WVA. That Pizza Roll looked good! 😋

Been across the bridge many times as a kid in the 1960’s. Daddy had Curry cousins in Elk Creek! I learned to drive a Volkswagen (standard) on Route 52 going from Omar to Williamson in 1970. Daddy let me drive many times as a 14 year old through those curves! Remember the tree you drove around three times, Leo? We would stop at the company store going out of “town” and there was a small gas station by the bridge also.

I also learn to drive a standard vs an automatic on a hilly road. times back in the early 70's were fun. I can relate!😁

If you a fan of switchbacks and banked turns, head to Floyd and Patrick counties in VA on Rt 8. Built by the Conservation Corp. it is a drivers dream. No joke! The head into Stuart, home of The WoodBrothers Racing, Jeb Stuart, the County seat. There is uptown and downtown. In downtown there is Stuart family restaurant. Fantastic food! But Rt 8 is your ticket to fun!

52 reminds me of a rollercoaster as well. Been up and down it quite a few times. You need really good brakes and rotors going down that hill. It's the most curvy road I've ever been on, on that hill going to Delbartin, and Island Creek. That can be quite dangerous for anyone not familiar with it. A trip from Williamson to Bluefield felt soooo long. It's the longest 100 miles I ever drove. 😳
    But it's a pretty drive. 🙂

Growing up in Omar I do remember fishing for the "horny heads" as we all called them LOL. I wonder what type of fish they really were? I can remember catching them by the dozens. We always released them as I would never eat anything out of the creeks lol.
Sadly, large swaths of the creek where I grew up is virtually lifeless and an ugly orange color due to all the acidity in the wastewater runoff from the coal mines.
I was so devastated when I recently went back to a place we all used to fish when I was young and there was literally nothing in a large swath of the creek...no Crayfish or Crawdads as we called them, no minnows, no witch doctors flying around...very sad. It was a horrid rust color even the rocks all rust colored.
Mining surely fed a lot of us but it sure has done a lot of damage to our water table and who knows what they used to dump into the creeks and streams before regulations forced them to pay more attention to the recklessness. Great video. I will try Marias too if it is still open.
I assume it is but ya never know around southern WV, these little businesses, drive-ins, restaurants and food trucks open and close seemingly overnight. Thanks for the cool look at Delbarton, the town is surely giving a good effort at trying to spark back to life and there are some good signs there for sure.

Should have stopped and showed the pay phone still hanging on the building. Might have been an old home. And not rich. But you can bet there was love. All we needed back then. I watch a family from. New Zealand. And their daughter is cooking the number one foods in each state of USA. And her meal for Kentucky. She fixed pizza rolls. They was made back in the day for coal miners. West Virginia so that's what she fixed. And the family loved them.
