Figured I'd have another go at this, three years since the last one. This time with quicker kills and no hits. Using an emulator this time, rather than a real SMS.
30 years after playing this as a kid and now seeing it on TH-cam and reading people’s experiences as an adult pretty much sums up why TH-cam is so special .
I only ever beat Mandara a couple of times as a kid, what an infuriating boss! And then you finally beat the statues only to be confronted with that giant face spitting napalm kick-balls at you.
+Phibes Lives Haha yes. It must have taken me a dozen times before I finally got past the wall and then that! The difficulty curve in this game is up and down all over. You assume Lobster will be impossible after this and then he turns out to be the easiest boss in the game! :)
When i was a child Mandara was the hardest boss on this game IMO... And the easiest way i found to beat him was to use knives since they fire faster than the gun (what a messed up game mechanic..)
Amazing how little replay value games had back in the old days. The ending was epic with a "GAME OVER". LOL. These were great games during our childhood. The boss fight music has been stuck in my head for many years. This was a very difficult game as a kid and I'd imagine I would still lose patience over it as a 38 year old adult. :-D
This was actually one of the few SMS games I remember playing that didn't have some kind of ending - either some pictures or a simple animation. My best guess is that they wanted to keep the cartridge ROM down to two megabits and simply ran out of memory. Either that or they had to make a deadline. I remember being hugely disappointed, only seeing a "game over" when I beat the Masked Ninja!
Edmond Lau I totally disagree with retro games not having replay value. I own a PS4 and love Uncharted, Dishonered etc, but I don't have the itch to ever go back to them once I'm finished. Now my retro stuff I can go back and play most and they will still be fun. Go play Contra or Gun Star heroes and tell me they're still not fun till this day. Games you can play over and over. Those are what you call timeless games. So yea, I couldn't disagree with you more.
@@LittleBigKid707b Contra was a difficult game me me as well even with the Konami code. But it was a great run and gun game. Did you ever play Smash TV? Talk about run and gun 😂
@@edmondlau511 4 years later? Good to see you still here. Smash T.V wasn't a Run N Gun. It was an arena shooter. Contra, Gunstar Heroes, Blazing Chrome, Metal Slug, Alien Soldier, etc are Run N Guns. To answer your question, yes I've played it at the arcades.
I remember dedicating most of my 10th year to completing this game. Only for it to say “Game over” at the end… I’m still getting over it 34 years later.
I remember never understanding that Black Turtle's nose was its weak point because it always made a metallic noise when hit with a shuriken. I think I always just incidentally melee'd it with the chain when the ninjas jumped out and killed it with dozens of hits in one second due to it not hit-stunning the weak point.
That third boss I am having such a tough time with... those blocks you have to blast through, I can't make it...damn impossible....you made it look easy as shite
Bad Mandara tactic. You can complete it faster by jumping and shooting which allows you to fire off an extra round. Basically killing the Mandaras twice as fast. Also, the gun doesn't give a "successful hit" sound, it's just silent. For extra enjoyment, use any of the other weapons for the successful hit sound effect.
I have managed to beat Mandara twice, but don't seem to be able to do it again. Are you using some special turbo controller? Do you have any hints for me?
Hello. This is with an emulator and a joypad plugged into the PC, but there are no special cheats or "rapid fire" or anything like that. The key is timing/rhythm. I first played this game 25 years ago and beat Mandara then, but if I give it a go now, ocasionally I'll still mess up. Sometimes hammering the buttons seems to get you through, but I've found this to be less successful than a consistent rhythm.
+TheGamingClassic I think the secret is to be as close as possible so to increase the attack rating,but not too close as to you have to move backwards all the time. A really tough boss!

That final boss, damn, as a kid I was never gonna beat that. You try to hit him he's invulnerable at his first frames during his attacks and you have to time your hits precisely. Now as a grown man I finally beat him and what do you get at the end??? Just a game over screen with no cutscenes and back at the main menu WTF!?
Fuck mandara you had to reach that stage with power (like the gun,shuriken doesnt work) if you lose a life then youll lose the power ups and youre fried,its impossible with the shuriken
Mandara was the hardest boss of them all. There was nothing to Ken Oh or the black turtle. You didn't want to get walled by lobster or he will slice ya to ribbons. The masked ninja was at his toughest when he was running at ya. If you got one hit on him you gotta keep on firing away at him til ya killed him
Believe it or not... I've been playing this game for almost 20 years and I've never beaten it... and guess where I always stop? exactly... boss Mandara... I've tried everything to shoot but what if the speed buttons are slow and I get hurt?! frustrating as hell!
I ended black turtle with the same damage I started with - the damage was during the level rather than the boss fight. This was done with an emulator where I saved the start of each boss, then played them through, recording them and then editing them together. I hope that clarifies things :)
Meu tio jogou esse game antes de mim, eu já sabia da estratégia pra derrotar os três primeiros chefes e aos outros fui vencendo com muitas táticas de combate e no fim consegui derrotar todos.

Yeah this mandara was so frustrating

📠. The knives only required 3 hits. I loved the grenade power up in this game.

The SMS port obliterates the unlicensed Tengen Nes port by hundreds of miles away.
Except it's way slower and has a stupid pixel perfect jump on 4-2. Really, the graphics are the only issue with the NES version.
The NES version is like a reverse-engineered version of the SMS version. I think perhaps it is.
This is actually impressive for an 8-bit system. I doubt the NES could have pulled this off as well.
There's actually a Tengen NES version that seems to be a hacked version of the Master System version.

I ended black turtle with the same damage I started with - the damage was during the level rather than the boss fight. This was done with an emulator where I saved the start of each boss, then played them through, recording them and then editing them together. I hope that clarifies things :)
