  • Today on JD Cars we’re replacing the thermostat on this 2005 BMW X3 with the M54 engine. The infamous M54 cooling system was acting up quite a bit, so we’re swapping out the thermostat, water pump, and expansion tank (more DIYs to come on these replacements). Overall, a quick and easy project almost anyone can do at home in an afternoon or less! Thanks for watching! Stay motivated 🤟

    No need of a silicone to seal the assembly? I saw this on another video?

    Just note that when reconnecting those push in coolant lines, don't first pull out the locking clips. First push them into the locking position and you will hear them click into the fully locked position when you push the hose back into place. That tells you it's locked. That is the way it was designed to work. Don't pull the locking spring / clip out, reconnect the hose and then try to push the locking clip back in. You won't be able to tell if it is actually in position and latched or not. And then you'll pull up to a traffic light and wonder why ALL of your coolant just pissed out onto the street. Don't ask me how I know...

    Hi thanks for the video. Can you tell me approximately how long this took and if $380 is an appropriate price for thermostat replacement?

    • @JDCarsChannel
      @JDCarsChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      This took about an hour. $380 is a little steep but not crazy

      10 Nm or 7 lb-ft - any time a gasket is involved, torques are usually quite low😊

    had you already drained coolant prior to doing this or will i have to do that? understand i’ll have to bleed the system after aswell

    • @JDCarsChannel
      @JDCarsChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I had already drained coolant. You don't need to drain fully but will lose some coolant in this process.

    • @JMUDoc
      @JMUDoc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can let the coolant out of the expansion tank only, if you like - it's barely one litre.

    • @OsamaBinLamaa
      @OsamaBinLamaa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JMUDoc do i have to drain expansion tank or can i catch it from the hoses after unplugging them from the thermostat? gotta get around to that this weekend haha

    • @JMUDoc
      @JMUDoc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OsamaBinLamaa You can catch it from the hoses - it's not a lot because the thermostat is very high up in the cooling loop.
