    Bein an old timer, I didn't realize Mossberg made a 395 in the 3-1/2" chamber especially since they only made 2-3/4" & 3" shells back then...just maybe it kicked so much because you forced the 3-1/2" shell up into the forcing cone about 1/2"...lucky all you got was a bust in the cheek! Check your chambering...Be safe! HTH👍

    • @nunyabussiness4054
      @nunyabussiness4054 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      After the shot and the shell opened it wouldn't eject or even completely exit the chamber. Lucky it didn't blow up in his face.

      I was thinking that exact same thing. I didn't think they'd made a poly choke since way way before 3 and 1/2 shells

    • @rickysparman3162
      @rickysparman3162 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@henryturnerjr3857 polychoke has been around a long time, and most likely sold on that gun when new, but I'm quite sure the chamber is only for 2-3/4" & 3" but not the 3-1/2"! Forcing that shell up into the forcing cone of the barrel will greatly increase the pressure... leading to catastrophic failure. Just lucky is all I'm saying

    I've built turkey guns with the evolution of the ammo. From chilled to copper plated to hevi to tss shot. Back in the day would I had given $20 for 10 extra yrds. Yes! Most of us would. I built for 70yrds. Only used 40-50 yrds of that. It was a hobby and I enjoyed it. Now tss in these sub guages wakes them UP! I'm currently running a 28" 410. I'm built for 40yrds but my last 8 birds has been inside of 20yrds. I've been playing with the 28ga this yr. Its the nastiest bore I've shot. Its just evil! Now is it cheap? Nope. But hey I'm not dove hunting with it either. 2 shots I'm done for the year. I'm not out here on a budget or to prove how cheap I can harvest a turkey. I've seen guys gripe about cost while they drive a $80,000 truck hooked to a $70,000 boat.

    Watching from the UK, I've never seen a bolt action 12 gauge or an adjustable choke that can be modified like that one. Very interesting, good content, and although TSS is way more expensive than lead I think for Game its worth it. You can shoot no9 with the same punch as no5 in lead.

    So fyi i noticed and I think that old mossberg only came in 3 inch and tss is 3 1/2. you would be over pressure for that old thing. And the tungsten shot is harder and heavier then steel and can damage cokes that are not rated for it.

      @@WHOTEEWHO It's not the shotgun we are worried about getting damaged, it's you. The 3 1/2" shell may chamber but when it is fired and the crimp is pushed open it should open into the larger chamber not the smaller barrel bore. It creates a partial blockage and can send pressures soaring. You almost had a pipe bomb blow up 6" from your face. Try this, take the fired hull and try to put it back into the gun. If it won't chamber fully when the crimp is fully opened you are in danger.

    I think the real selling point of TSS is in .410 and 20 Gauge more so than 12 in my opinion. A lot of turkey hunting is done at much closer ranges, 50 yards max or so at least in my experience and those who do it far more often than me. The .410's put down good patterns at 40 yards easily, the 20 gauges can do so out to 60 and even 70 yards. Where as with 12 gauge, loads like Longbeard XR from Winchester have been doing 45-60 yard shots for years already and much cheaper prices.
    When I saw the .410 and 20 gauges going out as far as they did, I always said you could probably take the 12's out to100 yards with a respectable pattern and this confirms it. Though if you're going to shoot a turkey that far, I'd say take a rifle and go for a headshot if it was permitted where you live. Still, proves that the remarks about how far they can pattern are all very true.

    I got some 12 ga. 3 inch Turkey mags about 30 years ago. Shot them in my Savage 12 ga. single shot. The shotgun was a Savage, but those rounds were SOB's! I've never experience such heavy recoil! Buckshot wasn't nearly as bad as those shells. It made me dread squeezing the trigger! Funny thing is that I have 4 rounds of that stuff left, and have NO desire to ever fire one again.

    I just started watching this video, and am not close to halfway through it, but if you get tss, and it doesn't dramatically out perform anything that isn't tss, then you aren't even coming close to having the right setup. I'm not a fan of Federal of any kind but know guys that love them. What I do like is an Apex #9 1-5/8 oz. through an Indian Creek .562 shot from a Remington 870 youth model. 10" circle at 40 yards, I get 340s every time. The Apex Turkey Ninja, which is a #8.5 shot size, and still get 290 in a 10" at 40 yards. Plus it gives the added knock down as well as 1175 fps. I have no desire to shoot a bird at 50+ yards, but on public land it doesn't always work out the way I'd like. That said, both of those loads are guaranteed at 60

    I used to pattern my shotguns with different loads from 25 to 45 yards for Turkey hunting. Grouse I would draw a milk jug size target on cardboard. At 30 yards pull up quickly and fire to see where and what my pattern was. If I recall right #4 and #6 shot was usually the best with most shotguns I tried. 5 I'm 90% sure did poorly in most shotguns. 3 inch held better pattern because 3 ½ smoke ringed or blew the center of the pattern out. Course this was 10 years ago and things change. Testing was done with Mossberg 835 factory full and Hastings custom choke. Remington Turkey gun my buddy owned and a couple more. I ended up using Winchester Supreme #6 and
    Federal #4. It was impressive how many shot that 835 with a Hastings choke could put into a Tom's head at 35 to 45 yards. Mush any closer.

    Tungsten has about twice the density of Lead, so 2 oz of Tungsten, assuming the same shot size, has about 1/2 the number of pellets for the same weight of Lead shot. Steel shot, being lighter than Lead, has a greater amount of pellets for the same weight.

    And, as much as I love to Turkey hunt I would go buy a couple of Turkeys at Kroger before I'd pay $60 for a small number of shotgun shells! My money is just too hard to come by! I thought the same the other day when you bought that .243 ammunition. I just couldn't do it! Will have to stay with my 30-30 or 30-06 when using a rifle. I Really wanted a nice .338 one time(long ago) then saw the cost of the ammo. That ended that deal...Fast.

    Loved the video....was surprised that any pellets hit from the light load. Is the Mossberg a 3 and a half incher?, I dunno....mine wasn't but it was many years ago. Still, haven't seen a polychoke for 30 years. Maybe there is some better choke that would make the TSS a 100 yard turkey gun. Keep up the good work, thanks for posting. Let's do 200 yards. (:

    Last year I went to get a box or two of turkey shells and was shocked at the price of TSS. I remember about 3 years ago buying a box of 5 for about $27. Still not the greatest deal but much better than it is now.

    Can’t imagine comparing a 7.5 (dove load) to TSS and thinking they would be anywhere close at that range. Buy “cheapy” #4 or #5 heavy load high brass and compare them both around 60yds. Probably a much better comparison than a dedicated Turkey load versus a dove load…IMO. Naturally the TSS should win though.

    what I was surprised at was that mossberg bolt action shotgun being chambered for 3 1/2 inch mag with a ploy choke, I seen those guns around back in the late 1960's and 1970's, I never seen one chambered 3 1/2 I never seen or remember 3 1/2 shells in 12ga 10ga yes.

    Got to love bolt action shotguns. I got a Mossburg 183 .410 and a 190 in 16 I use for turkey and squirrel. Works just as good as any 12, I mostly run 4 shot but I can kind of see the appeal of the smaller shot

    I’d like to see you take the Mossburg 395kb and test rifled slugs for smooth bore at 100 yards. I would like to see if slugs out of it just print all over the place or if fairly good groups can be achieved. I may want to slug hunt some whitetails this year.

    I swear by either the long beard XR 3 1/2” #6 or the Winchester supreme 3 1/2” #6. Both great turkey loads. #4-#6 are the go-to’s. Anything over #6 is too small and anything under #4 is too big with not that many projectiles

  • @ngzcaz
    @ngzcaz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    First, bought a Remington 1100 with a Herter's poly choke.. great patterns with all chokes, problem was, they were all 6 inches left and 8 inches low. Installation obviously off, cut the choke off, shoots right on the money.. Obviously, yours was put on correctly. Second, who shoots turkeys' at 100 yards in the woods ? Here in the Pocono's of Pa you can't even see 100 yards in the woods... Love the concept though..

  • @thrill75

    the 3 1/2 tss has 2 1/2 ounces of shot and the 2 3/4 shell has 1 1/8 oz of shot big diffrence in shot plus the tss is high brass vs low brass more powder in the tss . its not a good comparison. and you know i love you videos . try shooting some winchester cheap turkey loads from walmart there like 5 to 9 dollars a box . again love your videos

    If you want to shoot that far you need to try the Winchester long beard xr with an extra full choke. Not that you should ever need to shoot a turkey that far but those can do it. Try putting your arm on the paper with your wrist fully bent and your thumb and fingers together then trace it. Nice way to make a tom head and neck target for free

    You also need to take into account the penetration as to what will kill a turkey at that distance....a TSS #9 shot will penetrate almost 2" at 70 yards....enough to kill a turkey if shot in the head/neck....and lead 7 low brass cheap shell will only penetrate a half inch, not enough...the pattern is so dense as you have 700-800 pellets vs 300 in the cheap shells.....many people I know use 3 inch magnum 2 ounce #6 lead as a first shot ($3 loads typically good to 35 yards) then back it up with a 3 inch TSS #9 as a 2nd shot (12 load good to 70 yards)....the power of TSS is a #9 will penetrate enough to kill at 70 yards and give you 700 pellets to fill the pattern....they are just so darn expensive, so we try and only use them when really needed....

    Very interesting test. It would have been even better if we could tell how much 'boogie' as you say... that the pellets still had at that range (when I am shooting rounds that are either fairly expensive or very rare) I usually try to get all the information that I can out of the tests...to include ballistics, targets that will best demonstrate the projectiles ballistic limits and capture blocks to show residual energies and recover the projectiles...when possible. Twelve dollars a round for production run ammunition would likely qualify, but if it makes you feel any better I have on a few occasions tested collector's cartridges (like a box of them) that I later found out were 50 - 100 dollars a round...needless to say, it was a learning experience. Just out of curiosity, how would you say that those 12 gauge TSS loads when shot offhand would compare with your
    .500 Jeffrey and it would be really nice to see a penetration comparison between the Jeffrey full metal jacket rounds and the .50 bmg! I have done a ton of reloading for the .50 bmg and have 600gr. Woodleigh bullets that I could send you if you are interested.
    Actually, I have moved on from the .50 bmg to a wildcat .50/416 that I designed that is very close to the .500 Jeffrey in terms of case capacity (it's also comparable to the .460 Weatherby necked up to .510 without the belt). In a 32" barrel several loads were able to exceed 11,000 ft. lbs. before running into excessive (but warm) pressures! With the 750gr. PPI projectiles the energies were even higher with acceptable pressures but the recoil was literally beyond what would be safe in a normal gun without a good muzzle brake (which I try to avoid due to the insufficiency of both plugs and muffs).
    As always thanks for your excellent channel and keep your powder dry!
