You should never have any bare wire showing past the screw. Also looking at the wire it appears that the circuit was overloaded at one time. One more tip , with a metal box, it is a good practice to wrap electrical tape around the screws to prevent them from accidentally touching the box
It’s a good practice to wire ground first then neutral and hot last.

Nice job. The old one burned because of a poor connection. I don’t think it had anything to do with a short.
