Jen Turner is why I’m watching this. Awesome. Although when playing, she does look like she might be at bit on “The spectrum.” But there is just so much going on, it’s completely understandable. Wish she was still putting things like this out.
That guitarist, Jen, is something else. Always loved the part as recorded. Trippy to finally see the woman behind the magic, and so aligned with the original version!
@@ironking76 Every newer version I’ve seen of this song doesn’t have those fuzzy guitar parts, which makes them seem subpar. If I was Natalie’s guitarist, I’d try to put the work in to learn the parts. The one exception was when she was backed by an incredible jazz band on Rosie. That’s on TH-cam as well.
Jen's guitar intro is like ... the Hendrix intro to "All along the Watchtower".. beautifully executed ,soulful and will forever be a classic, just love her tasty playing!
A great song made memorable by the sublime Jen Turner's playing. All the stars aligned, for a while anyway. Natalie is always good, but she has never again captured it like then. Jen Turner was the difference.
NM has a catalog of excellent work - solo and with 10KM. Jen is an wonderful guitar player. We were all blessed to have Jen work with Natalie on the Tiger Lilly album. The world is a better place for these two wonderful musicians.
They hated each other after this album. That's why this was natalie's last good album. Jen was like whatever dude...I'm a medium of rock and you're a pansy. And told natalie she was peacing out and headed to the rock n roll holy land. And was never seen again. Whatever i dont know what exactly transpired i heard that they fell out somewhere though.
I'm so heartened to read that so many besides myself are captivated by Jennifer Turner's guitar-just awesome, and I am a veteran of live concerts featuring Jimi, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Beatkles Stones, on and on. I've been obsessed w/ Turner since Carnival came out. What a talent, oh, and Natalie too.
Maybe my all time favorite song, and because of both Natalie's voice and lyrics, but also that beautiful guitar, such a wonderful guitar brought to life by Jen Turner. JEN PLAYS THE GUITAR LIKE NO OTHER,,, SO GOOD...
this lady lives near me and I've met her a bunch of times. Not only still beautiful and talented but an environmental activist both locally and globally. Much love, Natalie
It is not possible to describe how compelling Natalie M. was... girls, when you watch Marc Bolan/T-Rex, you will have some concept of how we straight men feel when we see/hear/feel Natalie M/Jen Turner's acoustic art... she/they are devastating... Beautiful, feminine, alluring, strong, elementally desirable. omg as they say now.. I wish I'd seen this live.
It was only yesterday, while watching some live Natalie performances, that I put a face and name to that beautiful, effortlessly perfect guitar playing that I've always loved in these songs, and it's so cool to read so many other comments about Jen Turner. What a great musical match.
i had the joy of my life to hold a beautiful baby who was blessed. the child was born with downs syndrome. although this child was a boy i see no reason for difference. time has marched on since then, sleep in peace dear baby boy jonathan and play happily with the angels i will always remember you.
So to be clear, the song is not about her (Merchant). It was written by Merchant as a dedication to and recognition of the gifts and talents of special needs children.
Man, I love this song! Kinda rediscovering Natalie Merchant since her time with 10,000 maniacs. So glad this popped up on my feed, been binge watching/listening to everything of her that I can find! So smooth! ❤
I purchased this album when released and was floored by the guitar work, not knowing anything about who may have played. Later that year they appeared on SNL performing "Wonder" and "Carnival" (another guitar laden track). I was floored by what looked like a 20 year old Jennifer Turner on guitar. An amazingly talented musician.
Natalie, she is truly a "Wonder". Love her music, her personality, her style, she's got it all. And pciochetto, it;s not you, she looks radiant, absolutely beautiful...
Thanks for explaining what the song is about. I thought it was about an Indigo Child. I didn't see the bigger picture. I really love this song. Just amazing.
Nats voice and Jen's guitar came together for far too brief a time. The combination was special and i am afraid neither will do anything that stellar again.
I actually talked to Jen a couple of years back on Facebook about gear and her recording of Tigerlily. She was great and really down to earth. She had a band for a while called Furslide. As I understand, she's doing local gigs in New York City these days.
@@tawkinhedz She seemed pretty down to earth. Not stand-offish at all, and was happy to chat. Just seemed like any normal happy person. I asked about the gear on that album and she couldn't remember much as far as amps and effects. She did tell me she tried a strat but the pickup configurations just got in the way of her pinky, so she went with PRS. She seemed like she was just enjoying doing her local band thing.
"Wonder" is often mistaken as a song about vanity or arrogance. In actuality, it is a song about a woman with a physical disability and a refreshing attitude: differences in her physical body are not handicaps or deformities, they are wonders, a term that implies magic, awe and beauty. The woman makes her way through life "gifted with love, with patience, and with faith."

She does look hotter than usual in this video because she had somebody do her eye makeup. Natalie has done herself no favors over the years by consistently dressing like a 1950's mail clerk. At least her hair looks more and more amazing as she ages....
