    • @hdthor
      @hdthor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We overestimate the value of repetition. We make children do F=ma in a thousand different problems, hoping that repetition helps inculcate them. However, we underestimate how repetition leads to boredom and frustration.
      If you strip away all the unnecessary repetition, there isn’t much to learn. Ancient Greeks and Ancient Egyptians studied triangles for 20 years. We just learn the crux of what’s important: interior angles sum to 180, some cool tricks about right triangles, and fit it all in one semester.
      The reason the Greeks and Egyptians taught triangles for 20 years is because it was seen with their cultural lens of all-importance. Most of our math and science isn’t that important, you can skim over it and learn the gist. If you need to tackle anything fringe, you can always reference the obscura for it or just rederive the rare formulas from first principles. Speed isn’t important when it’s fringe rather than a cultural cornerstone of everyday life. That’s why we can be slower with triangles than ancients while still knowing all the same core information as they did.

      @@hdthor thank you for such a thoughtful and interesting response- i genuinely love that you took the time out of your day to make it and also be articulate in your delivery.
      I could not really agree more with the fundamental nature of your observations and points. We are using antiquated ideals to teach a generation that is not served by old fashioned rhetoric. one of the biggest challenges i see with this new, early education generation is that they have become so integrated in certain technology and interfaces our teachers can no longer hold their attention. so, the answer is not to fight against that and try to make them conform to 50 year old ideals, but to lean into this new way of learning and engage them in a way that is appropriate for the world they are growing up in.
