  • The Edge concept isn't exactly new anymore, but that isn't to say that it can't be extremely cool... Did Samsung make good use of it on the S6?

    To me it feels like the edge's display is something that a lot engineering and even more money went into just to give it a feature that might stand out, but seems 100% gimmiky und useless to me.

    And if your battery starts to decrease in quality or flat out dies, you can get a 200 dollar replacement or toss out your entire phone. Great! 800 dollars/euros well spent :(
    Still a great device though. But for now I'll stick with my Note 3 :)

    • @IpelengMotsatsi
      @IpelengMotsatsi 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But in reality do you really keeps your phone long enough to replace that battery. I have never had problems with any of my phones. Plus last at least 2 1/2 years before degrading.

    • @doobleshoodle
      @doobleshoodle 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not $200 for battery replacement. Accidental protection is $99 for S6 and $129 for S6 Edge which repairs upto 3 times.

    • @GuyRandom
      @GuyRandom 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I said *IF*. There's a chance that your battery is not as good as others and it will not be covered by Samsung's warranty. That would suck because replacing is very expensive and intensive, as I said earlier.

    • @Heat_In_The_Desert_Guy

      Guy Random No, it's actually covered in warranty if it degrades below 80% of the original capacity.
      After warranty, it costs $45.

  • @Ryzza5

    As a user, my gripes are:
    * The Phone Dialler + Contacts apps (easy enough to replace). A few times when answering the phone, my ear presses the Hold button, which is problematic.
    * Lack of a dedicated menu button (happy to hold the the home button for recent apps) - touching the app menu button at top edge takes a few tries with the 'edge'
    * The 'Smart Lock' feature which is supposed to disable the lock screen based on GPS location totally doesn't work and has now made unlocking the phone even more cumbersome than before.
    On the other hand I discovered the built in Samsung Milk app (free Internet Radio) and am quite happy with it - glad I didn't disable it straight away.

  • @Dyelon210
    @Dyelon210 9 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    "Why can't I change the uses of the capacitive back and menu buttons without rooting" Well there is another reason to root your phone Linus. I really like your content, but you're view on phones has always been off to me. I can understand that most "normal" (I'm using this word to non-techies) people don't want to root their phone. And there is a good reason behind that. However, a lot of techies do root their phone and change the ROM and stuff like that. Maybe you should try it some time and give a review on your experience doing it and using it. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 with a 5400 mAh battery and its rooted with C-Rom installed. This phone is old, but I can't find a reason to get another one. It does everything I want and how I want it done.

    I'm getting more and more annoyed by Samsung (and other vendors) refusing to make front-facing speakers. HTC showed the world that it was an excellent idea that made perfect sense, and yet we continue to get new phones with rear speakers. OUR EARS AREN'T BEHIND THE FUCKING PHONE.

    • @anita.b
      @anita.b 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Xuvial Sylvester Who uses speakers,besides people at home and twats on the subway.
      Face it,use headphones or be a twat.

    • @xuvial1391
      @xuvial1391 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ***** "Who uses speakers" is a dumb argument. The speakers are there, so put them in a place where they can be properly/clearly heard without having to cup your hand under it. HTC did it without issues so it's every other vendor's failure to not incorporate the same feature. It's only logical.

    • @mukkaar
      @mukkaar 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Xuvial Sylvester Putting speakers in front gives better sound but it compromises design. Most people don't really use them so much, or seriously listen music on them.
      And I'm pretty sure beautiful design gives more sales than front facing speakers.

    • @theunknownbeing7
      @theunknownbeing7 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, front facing speakers are better, but is it really required? Majority of the people frankly don't care much at all. Majority of the people who uses them will use them in quiet places like their homes. Otherwise, people use headphones for the loud public areas.
      Also, the speaker itself is very good in the s6 anyways.

    • @xSuperSS
      @xSuperSS 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Xuvial Sylvester To be honest I would not buy my S6 if it had front fascing speakers. I can't see any way that samsung could make it as beautiful as it is now and yes I bought it with my eyes instead of head but it turns out that it was not a bad choice.

    I just cracked my s4 screen and it's going to cost me 125$. AND ITS UNDER WARRANTY! I don't even want to think about how much it would have cost if it was the curved glass screen on the S6 edge...And say, if you were to buy an otter case to prevent it from being damaged, wouldn't it completely make the curve on the s6 irrelevant? under these circumstances I don't think the edge is going to be my go to on my next upgrade. but I must admit the Galaxy s6 edge looks freakin' amazing! Like always, great review!

    Still in love with the G2, CPU is mad fast, 3000mah battery does the job for me. Back buttons are a godsend once you get used to them, volume keys have always taken pictures, perfect for selfies when you hold it, front touch buttons can be changed and moved around, there has ALWAYS been a cog for all volume adjustment if you use the rocker once. Can't hate on the S6, but its going to take more than an extra gigabyte of ram to get me to switch, other than that, nothing is too stellar. G2 represent!

    Picked up my S6 Edge this week and it's awesome! Non expandable memory doesn't seem an issue to me but I'm upgrading from S3 Mini which I only had an 8Gb sd card in and I never filled that in 3 years so 64Gb should keep me going for quite a while. Only problem I have with it is once I put it in a case the volume and lock buttons are a little hard to get at, due to the curve of the screen they are closer the the back of the device than on my old S3 and the molding of the case interferes slightly, I'll give it some time and see if I can get used to it but may resort to carving the case out with my dremel to improve button access.

      As far as I can tell, focusing on the negative aspects of a product is unprofessional, so he only slips a few notes here and there that mentions the downsides.
      Like at 0:55. "Objectively worse to use" is more than enough for me to stay away from the Edge and consider the regular lineup only. I really like having a metallic/plastic edge on phones.

Please answer me because I'm not bitching about this new tecnology, I honestly cannot see the benefit of having such a pricy piece of hardware instead of a cheaper one

    So im in need of a new phone, and the Galaxy S6 has most defiantly caught my eye. So my question's, should i get this (Galaxy) or are there any other phones i should be checking out? I shall be upgrading this weekend. Also, im moving from Apple to Android for the first time, are there are apps/suggestions that i should take before moving to a different OS (complete noob with Android)?
    Thanks.

    Has everyone forgotten about the droid turbo? lol, that phone still smacks the s6 in the face spec wise, achieving higher cpu specs, double the battery life, more accurate 1440p display, the same 3 gb of RAM, and 5 built in external microphones for absolute clarity in your voice and videos, not to mention the outstanding dual LED flash that illuminates an entire room, the 21 megapixel camera, its 2 years older than the s6 so... really linus, this s6 is far from new or special. i give it props for being curvy :) its cute

      ApexPredator FiftyCal I would buy a turbo if they sold it in the UK. As far as I understand it there's no point buying a US phone for Europe, right? It's a shame. I like the design of the edge but in practicality it turns me off, and looking at the non-edge version it's almost as ugly as the last Galaxy. At least they got rid of that horrific tacky leather backing but the overall aesthetics of the device are still poor compared to the nexus line. And then, once again, it's a shame the Nexus 7 is a phablet like nearly everything else.
      Recently broke my Moto G in an accident and I will probably end up replacing it or getting the 4G because it's small, has a great display, great battery life, sleek design, but poor camera. Rather that than carry a palm pilot around.

    Would've kind of preferred a completely stock review sans skin as the back of the phone is an incredibly important material. Does it feel uncomfortably warm? Does it feel plasticy? Is it easy to grip?
    I understand this was sponsored by dbrand and you've got to be grateful for that, but because of their skin we missed out a pretty major component of the design IMO

    • @doobleshoodle
      @doobleshoodle 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it doesn't feel warm.
      No, it doesn't feel "plasticy". It's made of Aluminum and glass for f*cks sake.
      Yes, it's easy to hold. The sides are made that way.
      Now, go to a store to try it out if you don't believe me.

    • @LiamQ1994
      @LiamQ1994 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      404_error As much as I appreciate you taking the time to reply, you did so in a bit of a dick way. Also I may point out that although something is made of aluminium and glass (which I know this is already, thank you) it can still feel tacky / plasticy and that is my question.
      I do worry about the shape of the sides as the back looks quite sharp with a curved front edge, the opposite to most phones. However my question was purely to do with material choice as glossy finishes can often feel overly grippy to the point of feeling sticky, whereas matt finishes can be comfortable but inherently slidey.
      I trust Linus' reviews as he certainly knows what he is talking about and generally covers all important points so y'know, would've liked to hear it from him but thanks for your comment.

    • @doobleshoodle
      @doobleshoodle 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Liam Quinn It looks premium and feels premium dude. And, No, it doesn't feel overly grippy. It's just enough so that it doesn't slips out of your hand. Trust me, the design is not something that is wrong with this device.
      I say it again, try it out in the store. Maybe you'll like the normal S6 more.
      Moreover, Samsung Pay (works with existing credit cards machines) is nearing it's launch if you're into mobile payments.

    What's with companies adding heart rate sensors, even on watches, the sensor cannot monitor the heart rate for a period of time but only for the second it picked the rate. If you're going to add a sensor make it a usable one that can be a sport sensor that detects for longer periods of time for let's say cardio.

    As a long time Apple user (On the iPhone 6 at the moment) I am very into this phone. The design is really next level, albeit, i am NOT okay with all the branding on the front display and back or the touch buttons either. TouchWiz is really improving as well and multitasking, even if its just two apps at once, is a must have features in 2015. I find myself becoming more bored with IOS everyday honestly. Its basically been the same look and functions since 2007. Go Sammy! Focus a little more on UX and design and you'll be unstoppable! ***** *****

    I don't know what it is about the s6 edge, but I just prefer the Nexus 5 to it. It may be due to touchwiz being laggy (Albeit due to a RAM management problem which will be fixed at some point, but still), or the fact that I struggle to use it with one hand. I also prefer the look of stock android to the touchwiz UI. I should love it, its got everything I would want, but for some reason I find myself going back to the nexus, a big shame really.

    I have a Galaxy Note Edge and personally found that I liked the functionality on it much more than the newer S6 Edge...The original Note Edge has these customizable panels where you can swap out different shortcuts to your favorite applications and access them with a simple inwards swipe - plus it had cool extra features like toggling your flashlight, showing you the weather, and using your stopwatch all from the edge screen.
    I was really surprised how many less things the newer S6 version could do (the S6 version doesn't to my knowledge have any of the aforementioned features at all). I would gladly pick custom panels and a more involved edge interface over the more prominent night clock and silly people edge feature in the newer model xD I certainly don't think i'll switch anytime soon :P
    Anyone who has tried these phones out, what do you think? I'd love to hear opinions on these unique phones :)

    I have a galaxy s4, and I really like it. I really get pissed by the bloatware sometimes, and touchwiz is not so fast and smooth. I dont know why, but the camera acts kinda weird for me, and other flaws, but still, I really like the thing. Before you ask - No! Its not the battery and expandable storage. Ive tried iPhones, and they were kinda decent, Ive tried motorolla phones, and I liked them less than the iPhones, I have tried the new huawei p7, that I like less than the iPhones aswell and I realised - its the off-screen buttons. I just cant seem to live without those. So the real question is.. edge or not to edge?

    I have this phone and I love it too. It's very powerful and good looking! The only things I don't like include: battery life compared to my old iphone 5, seamless copy and paste everywhere like iOS, and saying Ok Google is harder than saying Hey Siri for some reason. Siri is also more responsive, but Ok Google has been improving lately. Sometimes the large size is clumsy and makes me press buttons while taking pictures and trying to hold it on its edges. Also if you try charging with most USB cords besides the Samsung fast charger, which is great, the phone actually can die on you because it doesn't charge up fast enough.

    I have the s6 edge plus and my biggest issue is the proprietary software loading it down, while other phones are upgrading to 6.0 and even some going up to 6.1, while the edge is stuck on 5.1 as well as on the plus they remove the ir blaster which is a real pain. I work as a tv salesman and having the ability to use my phone when half of my tvs don't have the remotes present is super handy. While we all know the sd card expansion is very unfortunate, it especially hurts me becuase I'm the type of preson who uses youtube downloader for all my youtube watching for when I'm at work. it's just a pain. I've also run into issues on games and flash applications and even on links in my web browser, where an icon is on the edge screen but won't detect that I hit it because I don't know where my finger is. In fact the largest benifit to the edge is scrolling through a website with the edge (on times that it does register my touch) is excellent because now my fingers aren't in the way of what I'm looking at. while I must say vissualy and functionaly pleasing, the s6 edge (and plus) are just not worth the effort of losing a straight screen.
