I was 18 when this came out. I was a senior in High School. My family owned a roller skating rink (1971-2009) I would DJ there most of my life. This was a highly requested song for couples song when it came out. And even after it's popularity dwindled from radio airplay. I'm 51 now and this song is still amazing. The lyrics. The story it tells. Still relevant today.

I worked in the radio business from 1985-2019. I started on an AM station that still played Top 40 hita until 1987, when the company launched a Top 40 FM station and moved switched the AM to soft rock (Adult Contemporary) to target an older audience. For a time, the AM station did very well with soft rock. I did afternoons on that station and this song reminds me of being on the radio playing songs like this that would prove to be legendary.

There were so many adult-oriented heartbreakingly soft rock ballads like this back in 86-89 (and some into the first half of the 90s too). One of my guilty pleasures as a kid, and I really miss them now since there's no sappy music like this in the Top 40 anymore.
