    Recommend looking into copper tape as an alternative to copper wire. If you pick the right tape, with non-conductive adhesive, it will be electrically isolated from the wood, meaning your batteries should last longer. As you've said before - the copper tape doesn't fix well to wood - maybe put another tape down as an intermediary - not sure what would be best yet - I'll be doing my own investigations too :D

    I have this installed in my garden
    Previously slugs have been found in the hanging baskets
    Copper wire is the way to go
    However it still needs maintenance you loose conductivity as the wire tarnishes
    Simply spray the wire
    with brick acid and your back in business in seconds
    I used 1.25mm wire
    Great results

    Good ideas, Lilly.
    I too had this idea but have never yet got around to it.
    But what I wondered was whether there wound be a market for waterproof rolls of tape, with twin conducting lines already attached or better still imprinted 🤔
    Don’t know if anyone makes these🤔
    Copper often tarnishes eventually. Maybe a non-tarnishing plating?
    More expensive but might last for many many years
    Maybe also, solar powered with battery charged for nights.
    And s
    Beds could be connected one to another to another such that one power pack could cover several beds

    As another line of defence you could spray your vegetables with a garlic water solution, this deters slugs and snails away from the plant and it is an organic way to get rid of them as oppose to chemicals. I am no gardening expert but I watched it on a gardening program that we have in England. Hope this helps.

    Hi Lilly, good idea I will make one. I live in France, this year slugs have destroyed 80% of my beans ! You can add a resistor to the circuit to limit the current and avoid a shortcut on the battery, if something goes wrong. It's would be interesting to test how much current is necessary to zap these beasts :D If you want to shock it harder (to make the snail remember not to climb), you can also add a capacitor in the circuit, it will send a lot of power into the wires in a millisecond without damaging the battery.

    Hi Lilly, great idea, j worked on telephone wires so have the correct crimps and can strip sheathing off long lengths of copper wires in a cable, wires are about .5mm or thereabouts, coupled with insulators on the corners so that wire is just off the wood, hopefully should be ideal for slugs/snails, keep the videos coming!!👍

I only don´t agree with the voltage you propose; I´ll put 2 batteries in series to get 18 V. just to be sure that I get rid of these moluscs. I don´t live in Australia and where I live slugs are not protected by laws. And something have to protect my vegetables from slugs and snails.
    Thank you again !!!

    Hi Lilly, good idea but how long does your battery last? It seems stapling it directly to the wood will drain (shorten) the battery, especially if the wood gets wet. Also use beer traps in your raised beds, those work really well and are not toxic.Look forward to your next clip! Cheers, Peter

      @@TheRimBrakeGuy I build a 30 meter long fence and made it as in this video. I´ve noticed that when it rains the battery drains quite quickly but on more or less dry days my rechargable batteries can last 2-3 days. But these are old batteries so I want to buy some newer once to see if they will last longer. And Im also thinking of making some sort of cover on top of the wood, maybe in plastic, so the cobber threats stay as dry as possible, even during rainy days. So far im a fan of this cheap DIY solution, if you can live with changing the battery quite often.

    To get ride of your trapped snails and slugs try "cooking" your soil. there are different ways of doing this from take all your soil and heating it in your oven, heating your soil with heat lamps and other heaters while you turn your soil over. A large propane torch or build a fire in your beds. Afterwards you'll want to add compost or compost tea for the micro biome. good video I will try this with our new beds.

    I would recommend a half a centimeter between wires.
    I have seen several slugs about 1 cm length in my traps.
    I am thinking of just attaching up my wires to the house plug, which is 110 volts.
    That way no battery will fail. . If the wires cross, it will only trigger the circuit breaker.
    I could put a led light on it to make sure the wire is live.

    Sorry to disturb for a question partially relevant with your snail prevention system (which btw is very well explained! :) I plan to make it with a current sensor for attempts counting. I'll let you know how it works) --- Regarding to your raised beds, I'm wondering about the fabric I see in between the wooden frame and the ground. What's the purpose? Is it waterproof? Is it durable? How many years? Thank you a lot!

      @staffordshirebullterrierli7411 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, being as no one has answered Ill try to help with my opinion :).
      The main purpose is to help retain water evaporation, insulate the soil and help keep in the rain from washing away nutrients ( I grow outdoors).
      I save my soil bags and use them on the sides and bottom, shouldn't be water tight then add some weed matting.
      Then add a mix of sand/ stones/ gravel and water retaining gel ( this stuff is so underrated ) the gel will absorb upto 200x its size.
      Plant roots love this stuff and water is 33.3% oxygen, as the gels expand and contract as they dry, they create air pockets aerating the soil!

    • @sergioaiello7135

      @@staffordshirebullterrierli7411 Thank you, many new tips for me!! The tip of plastic water barrier addresses a question I have since quite a while. Thank you. I'm wondering about the amount of water retaining gel I need to buy for every square meter (and 35cm thick) of soil. Could you give me an idea? Thank you in advance!

    • @staffordshirebullterrierli7411
      @staffordshirebullterrierli7411 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sergioaiello7135 No worries bud. As to how much gel depends on you but dnt need too much. I got a kg from ebay for 10 quid and that goes really far if able to water often. I'm on my 2nd kilo now and I have done alot of experiments with it in the past.
      In a planter or big pot then moisture the gels first and then just throw in a couple/few handfuls of gel and Perlite to a bucket, mix well with desired compost/ soil mix then fill the planter, repeat till planter(add also a handful of grow more per bucket till planter full , I also add abit of bone and fish meal to the mid/top layers, you don't really need them above the top 50% of soil unless using for tomatos, then it will help getting really good roots from stem if replanting sideways. :)

    • @staffordshirebullterrierli7411
      @staffordshirebullterrierli7411 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sergioaiello7135 Ild also recommend using a 2l plastic bottle with very small holes drilled half way down, fill with matting and bury deep in the soil inbetween plants.
      Using this method delivers water straight to the roots/gels and keeps top of soil dry which helps against slugs.
      I also use crushed seashells and sharp sand to help with this but I also grew a load of rhubarb and flowers from seed which I offer them as a easy feed and all these measures have worked out extremely well :)

    To the tune of 'Strangers In The Night' - Sinatra:
    'Snails in the niiight....electric fences....crawling over branch...what were the chances...locked inside the bed.....before the night was throuuuuugh!'
    Seriously I really like this system, very simple and should be effective. I have heard about a non powered version of this that uses a wide layer of copper all the way around with no electric. Like 2cm copper tape? There is something about copper that repels them naturally. Maybe more expensive and less zapping to be sure, but no battery. Maybe experiment on a smaller raised bed?

    Why don't you just nail a wide copper strip - 2 to 3 cm - around the top of your boards...no electricity needed, slugs will not cross the copper strip. It's thin, and can be purchased in rolls. Also spreading coarse sand around the plant will kill the snails, as will diatomaceous earth.

    saw an army cadet put his tongue on a 90volt battery when he was a radio operator. They thought he was dead he collapsed so quickly. Took awhile for him to come too also. DON'T DO IT.

    Seems like the copper will oxidize quickly.
    Stainless steal wire would last longer.
