    bought this camera in 1979 and made a lot of films with it. Later I bought the 814xl-s too. Most of the cameras sold at Ebay don‘t work any more 100% (espec. lens-problems, crossfade, zoom, lightmeter). The Nizo 6080 was a rival to this camera bec it was possible to insert 60m film cassettes and offered 25p/sec. Canon only works with 15m cassettes. Anyway, the 1014xl-s will always be my favorite.

    For now I’m probably gonna purchase the regular version of the 1014 since the XLS version is currently out of my budget. But maybe some time in the future I’ll have enough dough to pony up for one. As for S8 cameras they seem more reliable than the Beaulieu 4008 series.

    Hi :) I just got this camera. I was wondering if it’s maybe not working properly. When I look through the viewfinder and slightly press the recording button the number lights up. I assume this is the light meter and should change but there is no move on numbers even this pointing the camera at different types of lights. Is this a sign it’s broken? Thank you

    • @ChrisOrrFilm
      @ChrisOrrFilm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that’s probably the light meter you’re looking at. Does it have film in it when you’re changing exposure? It’s hard for me to say if it’s broken, I guess put some film in it and try it out. Once you get it developed if your film is way over or under exposed I guess that would mean something is broken. I’d also try putting new batteries in and seeing if that works.

      make sure that the button for „auto“, „AE lock“, „manual“ is at „auto“. Then look through the viewfinder, slightly press the rec button and move the camera around in different positions (dark & light). If the lightmeter moves then it‘s ok.

    • @alexakfilm
      @alexakfilm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just my two cents... It sounds like your camera got a stuck "lap dissolve" button. That's my best guess. Could also be something in the electronics (it's CPU-controlled), which is worse...
      Anyway, same thing happens with my mint and fully operational 1014XL-S when I move the shutter lever to the "lap dissolve" position and activate the "lap dissolve" function by pressing the button.
      When that button is pressed, the camera continues running for a few seconds with the wind-up core stopped (to allow for rewinding of the "fade out" piece a few seconds later). The film is still being moved by the registration pin, and the shutter fades to black within a few seconds. After that the camera stops and auto-rewinds the "fade out" piece at high speed to double-expose it at the beginning of the next shot. The next shot automatically.begins with a fade-in, resulting in a lap dissolve.

    • @ChrisOrrFilm
      @ChrisOrrFilm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never used the Nizo 6080 but I'm sure it works well. I don't know exactly why this particular camera is so sought after, my only guess is that it was a widely used model and feels like it has good build quality when you hold it in your hand. Also I think it has more in camera options than the Nizo 6080 but that's just my guess.

    Just FYI frame rate doesn’t have anything to do with how much light goes in a picture.
    it’s Shutter speed. lower the shutter the more light is allowed inside.
    higher the shutter, the crispier image you get but you sacrifice light.

    • @christopherbradshaw9863
      @christopherbradshaw9863 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You must be used to making videos with mirrorless cameras where you set the shutter speed in terms of fractions of a second (eg; 1/60th/sec).
      With video cameras you set the shutter in terms of degrees of a circle (eg; 180 degrees). The term ‘shutter angle’ comes from film cameras like this super 8; where the shutter is a rotating circle with a wedge cut out to let the light hit the film. When the circle spins it exposes the film through the open wedge and then when it spins to the side that blocks light the mechanism advances the film. The speed of the circular shutter is directly and mechanically linked to the mechanism which advances the film.
      To put this into mirrorless terms filming at 24fps with a 180 degree shutter would effectively be filming at 1/48th sec. If you doubled the frame rate to 48fps the shutter angle is still at 180 degrees but now the effective shutter speed would equal 1/96th sec.
      So on this Super 8 camera when you 1/2 the frame rate from 18fps to 9fps you’re doubling the time each frame is exposed to light. Frame rate does factor in to how much light hits the film.

    • @ChrisOrrFilm
      @ChrisOrrFilm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I'm sure you could shoot a wedding on it but I wouldn't for a couple reasons, the first being it's pretty expensive to buy the film + get it developed. Also you're just very limited on how much you can film since weddings are long so you'll probably burn a ton of film. That's also not including the fact that yes, I've had more issues with film cameras than digital so there's always a risk that something might not come out the way you want it. There's so many film matte overlays and grain textures you can get nowadays that people use in post to make it look like it was shot on film I'd just do that to be on the safer side.

    will shooting slow motion burn my film out a lot quicker?

    • @popefrancis80
      @popefrancis80 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Slowmo is more frames per second, which when played back at 24fps gives slowmo, so you are using a lot more film. If you are shooting at 48fps instead of 24fps, you are consuming the film twice as fast
