  • In this video essay I examine the differences between Hispanic, Latinx, and Afro-Latinx. I also dive into the history of colorism from colonial times to its effects in today's society. These conversations are important, I encourage you to continue having them with your friends and families. Comment down below your feelings about colorism within the Latinx community.

    My Panamanian Father was BLACK FIRST, Panamanian second. He was very aware of anti Black hate in all Hispanics and Latin countries. That’s why when he came to America in the early fifties he found his true people in the Foundational Black American community where he found my FBA mother.

    Loved the video! My mom is AA and my dad is PR. By US standards he would be considered a 1/4 Black but he looks mestizo so he just identifies as Latin. Growing up he refused to teach me Spanish because he was insecure about his accent but he didn't want to teach me about the culture either. Then he would say things like "you're not Puerto Rican" or "you're not hispanic, why do you care so much?" when I would try to learn about the culture on my own. His mother and my own mom had the opposite opinion so I was very confused about my racial and ethnic identity as a kid. Especially growing up in the South with white and Mexican classmates that would call me a liar for saying I have a Hispanic dad... until they saw him themselves. AA and Latin Caribbeans clock me as a Black latina right away though 🥰 and visiting PR always felt like a homecoming.

      I'm sorry you had to go thru that! It's already difficult as a Black Latina to identify as such but it's harder when your own family make it a barrier for you as well. It really starts at home, and I'm glad you got your mom and gma to support you in this journey of self discovery. Keep researching and discovering your history. 💖

    I'm Afro Cuban raised around blacks and identified myself as but family broke it down as no you're not black but Cuban my mother never spoke of race being brown skin that's what people see black. No matter what country they have issues with darker skin it's crazy to be this way but this is a white persons tool as shame to be dark and it has ruled so for hundreds yet thousands of years. Respect the beauty of darker skin it is unique and true to lighten skin also is in many countries this is extremely disturbing we are not European embrace and respect who you are. Many things you say just brings back memories of what I've gone through and being favored a little more than if I were straight up black,Africans and Blacks or any one with African genes we catch Hell thank you Europeans for all that love.😂😂

    I really want to eradicate the latinx word entirely. The x isnt pronounced in spanish which isnt inclusive for the people of the language, that was created by liberals who wanted to fix something that isnt broken and they probably barely spoke any spanish. And Latino is not incorrect, ex. If there are a group of children (boys and girls) they as a whole are still Niños without excluding anyone, same goes for cousins of both genders, friends, uncles and aunts and so forth. You can refer to both genders in spanish and still include everyone by gender, which is why Latinos is inclusive to women as well. Where as Latinx isn’t inclusive of the actual native speakers, while they could make the pronunciation, they wont change their language because they truly understand that the word works and has always worked perfectly. I don’t think anyone’s ever been confused while saying Latinos and expecting only latino men in spanish or english.

    • @BeingTiffany
      @BeingTiffany  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The point I wanted to make is that Spanish is still a very gendered binary language. It’s not coincidental that the plural words in Spanish are still male nouns. Thank you for your opinion tho, I understand where you’re coming from!

    when you answered no I’m not black, I’m Dominican .. it happens because in nyc when someone asks are you black, they are asking are you African American. And your first reaction would be to say no, because culturally you identify as Dominican or Latina (I’m assuming) *and because you don’t share in the black African American experience If someone today asks u are you black? Do you just say yes. Or do u say yes then follow up with I’m Dominican or I’m Latina? I’m asking out of curiosity not trying to be like offensive or invasive. 😊

    • @BeingTiffany
      @BeingTiffany  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Here in the USA as a whole the term Black is mostly/widely used to refer to African Americans, so you are correct. I didn't identify as Black when I was younger cause to me that meant being AA and I am not. As I've gotten older and learned more about identity (politics, lol) I have started to identify as a Black Latina or just simply a Black woman.

    Latino came from the US which means The Romance languages French Spanish Portuguese Italian and Romanian. Spanish is a culture and its accurate to Latin America Because the Spanish are not a Race it's been a long time ago that's not the norm anymore. It's part of your culture so You are Spanish regardless of race.
