I stopped using lotion four years ago when I started using beard products. I have dry skin and use beard butter every day on my elbows and legs. I will never use lotion again. Thanks for everything you do Dan.
Being that Michigan is dry this time of year I decided to use my beard butter on my body because I can't stand lotion eather it definetly helped alot better definetly a game changer
I have been using beard butter from head to toe for over a year now. I have not had a single dry patch since I started. I would get dry, red, scaly spots and now I don't. I definitely recommend beard butter for more than your beard.
Interesting. I use lotion a few times a week, mainly to avoid itchiness/dryness in the torso/chest area. It works great & I quite enjoy it to be honest. Always willing to try new things though. Does beard oil work as a moisturizer even when skin is dry, or does it need to be damp (after a shower)? Seems like it would take a little bit of trial & error to figure out how much to use to cover a large surface area.
The only lotion I’ve used lately is Dr. Squatch and really only for my hands before bedtime. I always assumed the beard oil or butter would stay oily in my skin for a while but will definitely give this a shot 👌
First thing you pointed me towards back when i started my beard journey. Why waste the good stuff. Leftover oil on your palms? Rub it on your elbows or any other piece of skin you deem fit for some extra nourishment.
I use lotion on my face and head (bald) my face dries really bad in the winter. My dermatologist yelled at me and told me that my career did damage to my son since I was outside with no hat. Skin damage. Now she said my skin is doing great
Hey up Dan it's mainly beard oil i don't use butter or lotion hell I dont even use the styling wax i have. I was just always told that useing beard oil is essential and the main thing to use so i did after trying the oil and likeing the results. Have to use quite a lot though because like you said it's super absorbent
I absolutely agree with this!! I’ve been using unscented beard oil that is 75% ostrich oil for many years now instead of lotions. My skin on my face, hands, arms and body have never been more healthy and rejuvenated. 💯💯👊🤘
I do not like lotion either. I have also found that I “treat” my face and head with my beard oil after a shower. My daughter went to aesthetician school and is impressed how my skin is for my age.
Thanks Dan. What about the face? I have rosacea, and my face has become somewhat addicted to cetaphil moisturizing lotion. Several years ago, it seemed like a lot of beard youtubers were talking about putting oil or even butter on the face and I tried it a few times probably not enough.. but I just wanted to know what you thought of that. And yes, I do put the excess oil or butter on my arms.

Just like some beard products use aloe vera juice or hemp as the first ingredient, can lotion be formulated with these as opposed to water as the first ingredient? I'd definitely rock more lotion if that was the case.
Definitely a CeraVe moisturizing cream guy as my skin gets WRECKED in these Midwest winters. Have you tried tallow or tallow-based moisturizers for your skin or face before?
Now that I'm staying properly hydrated, using warm water to shower, cool water to rinse, and beard oil or butter my skin doesn't get as dry. And I don't need much oil or butter to help my skin.
Lotion has always given me that gross feeling of needing to wash it off after using it. I remember being young and asking my mom, “okay what do I do now” after using it and she said, nothing just let it be…I knew that wasn’t gonna fly, and thus began my disdain for lotion! We sell a TON of beard butter and beard oil to NON bearded people, specifically for the moisturizing properties for dry skin. It’s a wrap when they get a little sample on their hands, they LOVE it! 🙌
Also, Hannah keeps a jar of Native beard butter at her desk at all times for any dry skin / lotion needs, we even had a lady who got stung by a bee at our booth say the Native Oil really helped w/ relieving the pain. We didn’t know if it would or not, but she gave it a shot and was pleasantly surprised!!
It all makes sooo much sense when you step back and think logic. Not think what’s been told to us by doctors and dermatologists who are not looking so great lately with their prescription track record
Good stuff! I always rub my hands on my forearms and elbows after applying beard oil to my face and beard. At night after applying beard butter to my damp beard and rub the excess on my ankles and knees 👍🏻 I’ve not used skin lotion in years due to the garbage ingredients in them.
For someone who's hands Crack and bleed from the cold this doesn't work for me. Okeefes is about all that works. Tried beard oil and butter last winter as a alternative. Just didn't work
Yeah, those ingredients are scary. I use lotion on the advice of my dermatologist, but I'm going to get some beard butter and give it a try. I also use tallow on dry spots. None of it is cheap though, not even lotion. Also, if you do use a lotion, use the pump bottle not the cream in the tubs. Lotion vs cream...lotion gets a much higher rating on Yuka FWIW
Why the heck would you take skin care advice for some guy with a nice beard? If you were having car troubles would you go to Dan or a mechanic? How about financial advice Dan or a financial advisor? If you trust a dermatologist to check out. something that you think might be cancerous. I'm sure their advice on what's best to moisturizer you skin is more reliable than Dan's.
@DanCBearded they have lotion, but I use the butter for my face. It's Coco butter. I've used beard butter before as well. But the queen is cheap. Easy pick up from Walmart. I take it with me to work and stuff
DAN! MY DERMATOLOGIST CALLS ME THE DRY GUY. HE HAS RECOMMENDED SKIN PRODUCTS FOR THIS CONDITION. HE SAYS HYDRATION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DRY SKIN. FOR DRY SKIN PROBLEMS ARE CAUSED BECAUSE THE SKIN DOES NOT PRODUCE ENOUPH ESSENTISL OILS. SO USING ESSENTIAL OILS ON THE SKIN IS BETTER THAN LOTIONS.😊😊😊
Thanks for sharing Jim! Dehydration absolutely can and does cause dry skin though… so idk how much to listen to that dermatologist. A title doesn’t mean practical knowledge. We could go over pretty substantial examples, especially with the medical field over the last few years.
I'm pretty sure you're dermatologist didn't say essential oils. Also the environment plays a huge factor. I'm in Colorado which is very dry. Winter makes it dryer so naturally my skin is super dry. When I go to California to visit family my skin isn't nearly as dry. A dry environment literally wicks the moisture from your skin. A humid environment adds moisture. You're body does start producing less oil in your 40s and less as you age. Consuming collagen and fish oil helps your body to continue producing oil as you age. In particularly dry environments a good quality lotion like CeraVe is very helpful.
I feel you need to research on the physiology of the skin and the role of humectants, emollients, and occlusive in skincare. While oils are great emollients, they do not work as humectants and occlusives. Likewise, butters have emollients and when they include wax serve as occlusives. Good quality moisturizers should deliver all three properties, while delivering active compounds to the skin. I feel you are missing out on some benefits by dismissing moisturizers altogether. I think it is not an oil vs lotion situation, but an oil AND lotion combination that brings the most benefits.
Ever since Paige started using the Beard Butter from Doctor Nick's Amazing Man Stuff on her face after washing it instead of a lotion, all her dry flakey spots of her T Zone have just vanished that she struggled with from make up!!

@@ericdunthorne1981i’ve experimented with using organic body oils(Argan to be specific) and shea butter. Its more expensive but my skin always looked and felt better that when i apply lotion
I have to challenge you a bit on this one! Water being added or even the number 1 ingredient isn’t just because it’s a cheap filler. It’s because it acts as a solvent to form the lotions base. It also helps the lotion spread and absorb and helps create a stable emulsion. To say we should reconsider using lotions based on water being the main ingredient is a slippery slope. Take Copper John’s, Artius Man, and Volt shower products I’m using now for example. Their number 1 ingredient is water, but they work great! Sure they have very different uses but so does lotion when compared to oil or butter so it’s a bit of comparing apples to oranges IMO. I’ve also found many lotions that absorb quickly without any leftover greasiness and they do a fantastic job of keeping me moisturized without breaking the bank like replacing lotions with oil/butters would. Maybe some of your affiliates can come up with a lotion that checks all these boxes?! I also don’t think applying coconut oil or olive oil to the sensitive skin of my face is practical, but that may vary a lot based on skin type. Just my two cents!
I do not believe I said a cheap filler in this video in regards to water. Now, do I think it is a cheap filler with better options out there? ABSOLUTELY! An aloe base lotion will beat water based in almost every single situation. Now mineral oil, which is most store lotions, 100% is a cheap filler and there is zero argument for using it. I fully understand how lotions work. I actually work with solvents and emulsifiers on a very large scale. And your comparisons to beard products, such as washes, using water is entirely different. Impossible to compare rinse out products, to topically applied and left on products. Entirely different purposes. If we took a look at the moisturizing and nourishing results from oil or butter on skin, as compared to a water based lotion... there is no competition. The impact of a quality oil will last much longer. Now if we look at LCO or LOC methods using creams/lotions AND oil/butter, that's a different story. However, that defeats the many arguments about things like saving money. For the face, you absolutely could be spot on that coconut oil or olive oil are not best for your sensitive facial skin. However, something like hemisqualane oil likely is. And again, lotion replacements do not have to break the bank. There are natural and wonderful options that would entirely be on par with lotion price point OR save even more money. People (not saying you, just in general) get really sensitive with things they have been told forever and done forever. This is just sharing my experience and my thoughts. No selling or trying to convince anyone of anything. I think once the initial defense settles, and people try and/or think of the logic... it will hit different in a few months.
@@DanCBearded Thanks for the reply as always. I suppose this is the slippery slope/rabbit hole I was referencing. Aloe is made up of 99% water. I understand that it also contains additional properties that are better than water alone, which circles me back to water not inherently being a cheap filler. Sure they’re most certainly better options out there but if water is let’s say a neutral ingredient, I’d rather save a few bucks using water in my product to appeal to the a wider audience with more aggressive pricing if I were a business owner. I also understand I was comparing leave in products to wash out products, but my point is that even within the leave in product category there’s very different intended uses and ingredient ratios therefore comparing different types of leave in products isn’t completely different in this context than comparing leave in products to wash out products from my view. I have found many lotions that go on smooth, absorb quickly, maintain their moisturizing properties for a full day, and don’t leave a residual film. While I trust that oil/butter pound for pound may be more effective, results may vary depending on the individual product and the persons unique skin. Lotions may absorb better on my skin and revitalize differently than yours whereas oils/butters may leave a residue/film on mine making a lotion a better option for me. I’d like to see this develop into some new product options that have the best of both worlds between quality ingredients and price. The hemisqualane oil, considering the popularity of the Johnny Ray’s products, is an interesting alternative, but I shared in another video that the smell of that oil has a bit of an off putting scent to me, but it’s certainly worth trying to see how it works. While it’s true taking the advice of a dermatologist, even the younger ones that are more accepting to newer natural product options, is typically the way I would go, I’m certainly open to try new things!

@@ericdunthorne1981 one day I decided to to not use any body lotion after my shower and my allergies almost completely went away I didn’t think nothing of it. The following morning I showered and added lotion to my body and an hour later my allergies were full blast. The following day I showered and didn’t add any lotion and my allergies went away, so I decided to stop using lotion. I’ve never been to a doctor but I’ve been allergy free ever since.
@@ericdunthorne1981 because when I stopped using the lotion the allergies went away. When I apply lotion my sinuses get stuffed and my eyes get itchy. Don’t need a doctor to tell me that the problem is the body lotion. I’ve been allergy free ever since I stopped using it.
I stopped using lotion four years ago when I started using beard products. I have dry skin and use beard butter every day on my elbows and legs. I will never use lotion again. Thanks for everything you do Dan.
Same page here!
Being that Michigan is dry this time of year I decided to use my beard butter on my body because I can't stand lotion eather it definetly helped alot better definetly a game changer
That’s great to hear!
I switched soaps to one made with more moisturizing ingredients, and that helped a lot. But during the winter I need that beard butter boost as well.
Heck, totally get it
I have been using beard butter from head to toe for over a year now. I have not had a single dry patch since I started. I would get dry, red, scaly spots and now I don't. I definitely recommend beard butter for more than your beard.
That’s awesome!!
Oil does work as a moisturizer on dry skin, yes. However, all moisturizers, including lotion, work better in damp skin
The only lotion I’ve used lately is Dr. Squatch and really only for my hands before bedtime. I always assumed the beard oil or butter would stay oily in my skin for a while but will definitely give this a shot 👌
Try oil first, you will love it!
First thing you pointed me towards back when i started my beard journey. Why waste the good stuff. Leftover oil on your palms? Rub it on your elbows or any other piece of skin you deem fit for some extra nourishment.
Yessir!! Great method
I use lotion on my face and head (bald) my face dries really bad in the winter. My dermatologist yelled at me and told me that my career did damage to my son since I was outside with no hat. Skin damage. Now she said my skin is doing great
I’m glad it’s doing great now!
Absolutely got you!
I use some of the beard oils I don’t really use,for my body. Especially in the winter months. Works great
Great use for products that don’t make the lineup!
I absolutely agree with this!! I’ve been using unscented beard oil that is 75% ostrich oil for many years now instead of lotions. My skin on my face, hands, arms and body have never been more healthy and rejuvenated. 💯💯👊🤘
Bird oil is sooo good for the skin!
I do not like lotion either. I have also found that I “treat” my face and head with my beard oil after a shower. My daughter went to aesthetician school and is impressed how my skin is for my age.
That’s really cool to hear!
I use oil as a moisturizer on my face. I prefer thin oils like beard octane or pure essentials from Johnnie ray for that
@@DanCBearded Thanks Dan
@@yobabybubbaBro why would you ask a guy with a nice beard about skin advice? Consult a dermatologist they will give you reasons backed by data. Dan is working with feelings and personal experience. Facts on facts 💯
Excellent video, as always Dan C! No more icky lotion ever!! 😂
Thanks Melissa!
Sure, and people though snake oil sales men were giving them reliable advice. How would you know Dan is giving you good advice? Do you even plan on checking the validity of his claims?
Don’t do it Melissa! Don’t you dare look into your own research.
@@ericdunthorne1981 thankfully, I’m a licensed cosmetologist of 17 years. I can 💯 back up & recommend all of Dans advice. 🤓 Educatorrrrr’s….mount up! lol
Great information in this video Dan. I also use beard products on my body rather than lotion.
Awesome Saad!
Just like some beard products use aloe vera juice or hemp as the first ingredient, can lotion be formulated with these as opposed to water as the first ingredient? I'd definitely rock more lotion if that was the case.
Yesss! Aloe based lotions are much better. I would still prefer to use an oil personally though
Definitely a CeraVe moisturizing cream guy as my skin gets WRECKED in these Midwest winters. Have you tried tallow or tallow-based moisturizers for your skin or face before?
Tallow based is FANTASTIC!
Now that I'm staying properly hydrated, using warm water to shower, cool water to rinse, and beard oil or butter my skin doesn't get as dry. And I don't need much oil or butter to help my skin.
Those aspects help so much!
Funny how i cane across this video. I've recently switched to using Jamaican black castor oil for my beard, hair and skin! Works wounders!
That’s an awesome option!
What about beard oil or butter on tattoos?
I use both!
I like to use coconut oil mixed with essential oils for scents
That’s awesome!
Good stuff! I always rub my hands on my forearms and elbows after applying beard oil to my face and beard. At night after applying beard butter to my damp beard and rub the excess on my ankles and knees 👍🏻 I’ve not used skin lotion in years due to the garbage ingredients in them.
That’s awesome!
I already use beardoil for my scalp and my lower legs :-) also never ever more dry hands!
Exactly!
Dr Nick's beard oil on the hands and forearms does wonders for me in the winter!
Same!
Raw African shea butter is my go to on top of beard products
Fantastic option!
For someone who's hands Crack and bleed from the cold this doesn't work for me. Okeefes is about all that works. Tried beard oil and butter last winter as a alternative. Just didn't work
Finding what works for you is the most important thing!
Buffalo Bill's body lotion is the only good one lol. I hate lotion as well and using beard products has been a great change, especially in the winter!
The feel is just so bad to me!
I use cream on my face and hands only. I guess I could try beard oil on both as long as I’m not sliding off my guitar fretboard.
Oh absolutely! The key is just using enough and not too much
Never liked the lotion feeling. Been using the excess oil/butter as needed
I have never ever liked it either
Detroit beard butter is the best for my skin. Even my nails are healthier with the oil, and I use coconut oil on my skin. The best
Fantastic option!
Hey Dan never used lotion never really like it TBH just not for me.
Totally understand!
When i run out of oil , if i still got the butter that matches ..i def use it as lotion lol
Perfect!
I’m going to go try this
Keep us posted!
It’s insane how disappointed I have been in dermatologist
Why the heck would you take skin care advice for some guy with a nice beard? If you were having car troubles would you go to Dan or a mechanic? How about financial advice Dan or a financial advisor? If you trust a dermatologist to check out. something that you think might be cancerous. I'm sure their advice on what's best to moisturizer you skin is more reliable than Dan's.
100% haven’t used lotion, lip balms etc since I got into beard products.. no need. Use better soaps and shampoos as well probably doesn’t hurt!🍻🍻🍻
Same same same! And drinking more water
I'm the exact same way. Can't stand lotion. I use beard oil for any dryness that I have.
Let’s go!
I like queen helene personally
Is that a lotion brand?
@DanCBearded they have lotion, but I use the butter for my face. It's Coco butter.
I've used beard butter before as well. But the queen is cheap. Easy pick up from Walmart. I take it with me to work and stuff
Looks like a good option!
I don’t remember the last time I used a lotion lol beard oil/butter all day!
Love it!
I tried the beard butter on my skin, blocked my pours
Try oil! And make sure to not use too much. Too much of any good thing is bad
Stick with what your dermatologist recommends. Mine recommended CeraVe you can get it at a good price at Costco and often goes on sale.
We are getting a Costco soon in my town. I am excited! The building is under construction right now.
Thanks for sharing!

I respect that, thanks for sharing!

Sounds like you need to try goat milk lotion by Goattastic Skin. Oils on my skin tend to create zits and other skin irritations when used on a repetitive basis. The lotion doesn't leave you feeling greasy or a residue Sounds like you need a better lotion made with better ingredients. 😉
Are you aware of the comedogenic scale? If you understand that and your skin type, there is no worries or zits or irritation. Repetition has nothing to do with it. Using too much can cause clogged pores, but that’s the same for any product, lotion included
People please don't be dumb, take advice from Dan about beard stuff. Consult experts for information in any given specific field of study.
