    It is so nice to watch a battle report video, where the person behind the camera doesn't sound like they just woke up, hate what they do, are overly nervous, or find their own content boring

    Great report. Pikemen's Lament is a great game and it was cool to see it done in a small scale.

      That’s very kind of you to say, thank you. My plan is to run a map based campaign using these rules! We’ll see how that pans out.

      Thank you 👍 I think Pikeman’s lament is a fantastic game - I only wish it dealt with combined units and some rank and flank stuff though!

    Great game & really nice to see a battel report of the rules. Currently building and painting up ECW 28mm army for both sides to play these rules. I really like the way you can build a officer character up with battles. adds soo much flavour to the games. Sub to chancel.

      I haven't had much luck with the commander rules, you'd have to play something like 8 battles before they get a single chance to advance! That said, it's totally OK just to use their rules for flavour. I often forget in the game with challenges, duels, special rules, etc. but that's my mistake.

      I really enjoy PL - I wasn't convinced initially at the order/stamina system but it's really good. As I said to Seanos, for more videos would you like to see more PL one-off games, a campaign, or some other ECW rules?

      @@JackSargePainting I only have French and Russian armies painted up in 2mm presently, I have considered a British force too - but I'm just not sure about the rules to use, I don't like Lasalle enough for the level of complexity it requires!

    A good set of Rules imo, and you appear to know them very well the way you rattled through the game. In fact, going by Lion Rampant, Dragon Rampant and Rebels & Patriots (which I've all played), I would say they are all good - and that is coming from a guy who didn't really fancy skirmish wargaming before playing these rules. Also, whilst TPL is fundamentally a skirmish game and therefore the recommended basing leans towards bases of 1, 2 or 3 figures in 6 or 12 figure units, you've successfully illustrated how easy it is for us wargamers to adapt rules to other basing systems if we just give it a little thought (I arrived at a similar solution with my ACW figures when playing R&P). Some may also say it is not possible to play skirmish games with 10mm - well, going by experience using Pendraken's AWI range based in ones, twos and threes, the good news is that it is. Finally, glad to see that one base of that pike unit (see 1:56) was finally facing the right way in your army review at the end. Classic error which I've done myself often enough and only spotting it afterwards when reviewing photographs of my games! D'oh! 😉😂

    • @williamswargames
      @williamswargames  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's very kind of you to say. I wasn't at all convinced by Rampant system when I was watching battle reports, the dice successes vs stamina mechanic seemed forced - but it's actually a pretty inspired piece of game design. I was inspired by Little Wars TV who played "They who would be Kings" for their Isandlwana mass battle - as you can see it went quite well. I don't think casualty tracking with dice is as fun as casualty removal but it's certainly alot quicker. I think the only thing missing from this is rules about formation moving/facing, and the effect of flank/rear charges - the rest is pretty spot on!

    • @DH.2016
      @DH.2016 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@williamswargames Regarding the last point and so possibly of interest to you, although intended to be another skirmish level game, Rebels & Patriots has a formation option called Close Order. Whilst this confers certain advantages facing forward such as Volley Fire, Discipline and Attack, it also makes the CO formation more vulnerable to flank or rear attack with the enemy side getting a +1 when firing and disordering it when Attacking. I can't remember off-hand if TPL's Close Order formation for Pike has anything similar - if not, perhaps a house rule similar to R&P's might do the trick for you? 🙂

    Thanks for this. I plan to get the Epic Pike and Shotte starter from Warlord. I assume there's no issues playing with smaller minis? (Warlord's 'epic' seems to be somewhere between 12-15mm?)

    • @williamswargames
      @williamswargames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry for the delay in reply! I'm using 10mm figures here so Epic at 12-15mm is totally fine. I use wound counters rather than figure removal and as you can see, it works fine for me. If I were doing this again I would probably base up my pike and shot units on a single large base though...

      I think Epic scale is 13.5mm to eye-level, and 15mm to top-of-head (in other words, 15mm = 6 feet approx).

    I am looking for a good Rennaissance period rules and these look interesting. However, I noticed that the pike and shot units operate separately from each other. Is this normal under these rules or are there combined foot units with a core of pike with shot on the flanks?

    • @williamswargames
      @williamswargames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello there, sorry for the delay in reply - yes, these are technically skirmish rules with individual figures at a smaller scale so the units are in theory separate. There are no combined units in this ruleset I'm afraid - it's a compromise I was willing to make for the sake of the rest of the rules being so good!

    • @sirrathersplendid4825
      @sirrathersplendid4825 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To be honest, you probably wouldn’t get many pike blocks operating alone in a real life battle at this level.

    Can I ask why the artillery didn’t fire or did I miss something? Very interesting game. I’m not familiar with the rules, but they do seem to lend themselves to solo play, which is how I will now be playing after a house move.
