    Don't forget to open the air bleed on the inlet port on the engine. This will bleed the line of air as you charge the line, so you don't cavate the pump. 32 years as a firefighter/driver.

    I just joined my local volunteer department. My chief said he is going to teach me how to work the truck on calls. Thanks for the video, I'll use it as a study guide.

    Good training video. In cold climates we never put the hydrant wrench on the ground. You can easily loose it.

      Even then, in real life, you have time to connect the hydrant to the truck - no need to rush and race it. There is already water in the truck to start fire fighting operations while the hydrant is being connected.

    that hydrant in the video opens counter-clockwise but the hydrants in New York open clock-wise

    Turn the water on and off slowly boys, you can create water hammer and blow the main. Then you have no water.

    Why isn’t the hydrant bag in the same spot as the 5” hose? That would make sense.

    What was the, "butt valve" on the side installed for?

    • @curtislidstrom7386
      @curtislidstrom7386 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It allows incoming engines to hook up to the hydrant and get water without first turning off the hydrant. It has a plate that stops incoming water but can be opened with a handle on the side.

    Cool you did it the good way cause I just saw one who was opening too fast, could damage the water line by hammering it, pipe burst is not really usefull.

    I've always wondered why the hydrant main hose is aimed into the street (where stupid drivers park illegally) rather than parallel to the street so the main line can turn between two cars? I know it would need to be a little longer, but it assures the line can aways go between or over cars.

      Also keep in mind when that 5" is charged it mine as well be a filled with concrete. The loop you would have to make would waste so much time. Like everyone said bust out the windows, or if need be push the car out of the way with another vehicle

    Meanwhile in the 2 minutes it took to connect the house was a total loss! Also why not put the hydrant wrench bag with the pony roll? Rather than run to the rear of the truck?

    • @caseydavis9698
      @caseydavis9698 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      While i understand that speed is a necessity, if a house is gone in 2 minutes because of someone connecting a hydrant, the house was gone anyway. Also the engineer can use tank water while the hydrant is being connected and use hydrant water to refill the tank once it is connected. Just my input, thanks

      Also, alot of depts will make the second arriving engine do the hydrant connection. First due dumps the LDH and bag and takes off to the scene. Next engine pulls up and connects and charges the line. Meanwhile, first eng uses booster tank. Theres some depts who first due doesnt even do this-they get to the scene and use the tank. The second due connects and stretches. Honestly, unless you are very short staffed and/or your MA is a long way off, I dont see the point in the first due hooking up their own hydrant and laying in-THAT takes the longest time over anything and should be the last resort, end of the world scenario, IMHO.

    You must ensure pressurized water. That fireman did not check for "pressure". That could very well be a "dead hydrant.". You must ensure pressure. This is embarrassing.

    So Slow.

    • @CulTroN
      @CulTroN 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s not usually that slow, usually they have more people on the scene obv, and they rush it. This video does happen to be a tutorial video, meaning it has to be slow.

    • @MikeHermo
      @MikeHermo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve seen people rush and make so many mistakes and do it even slower. This is also a training video, rushing wouldn’t teach anyone anything.
