Rush never gets old. 40 years later Im still listening to their music! Alex inspired me to play guitar. He is massively underrated unfortunately.
'massively' is even an understatement. The 3 of them are just SOOOO good, Alex seems to get somewhat overlooked compared to other stand-out guitarist's that play with other bands that don't have giant drummers and bassist/singers. Thanks for watching.
Alex also inspired me to play guitar. This is my favorite solo of his, so much about his playing just really clicked with me. Geddy and Neil are masters and their talent overshadows how much Alex contributed to their music IMO.

I bought the DVD set of Rush in Rio decades ago, and it shows behind the scenes of their concerts in Sao Paulo and Rio. There are no seat assignments, and when the doors open, it's like a damn broke. But instead of water, it's rabid fans! Thanks for watching.

I started playing drums when I was 8 years old (I'm 62 now).
I was raised on a diet of deep purple, yes, led zeppelin, Pink Floyd and classical.
Went onto prog-rock when I was 12 and did a lot of gigs and studio work with various artists.
When I heard rush Niel inspired me to really tighten my skills and learn various different genres like jazz, big band, military, disco ect.
I think it's virtually impossible to train ones mind to play to the inspirational level of Niel but he really gave me the push I needed to improve in every way.
Many rock bands are so serious on stage, but rush just get up there and have fun.
Miss them very much.

Slightly similar as my own experience. Firstly, I was a classic energy punk drummer (Stiff Little Fingers et al) then started sloppily emulating Kieth Moon and the very difficult John Bonham. Then, I heard Exit Stage Left in a hazy smokey basement with my other teenage friends, and was actually considering that the drumming was post production trickery. Like you, I went forward with inspiration to fine-tune my mechanics and technique. Overall, there was a significant, albeit slow progressive improvement in my game. I even started drumming Jeff Beck, Wired songs, along with Terry Bozio with Frank Zappa (Sheik Yer Bouti)... all this because of my first experience hearing Peart (RIP). Thanks for watching.

Imo moon wasn't a particularly good drummer and sloppy is a good description.
I used to play a lot of "Yes" style stuff in my 20s so Bill Bruford was my go-to reference.
I actually play 7 different instruments so more melodic genres are my thing, like Floyd.
It's a bloody nightmare for me when I listen to anything because I'm trying to analyse every instrument at the same time. 🤪

Absolutely! Despite being Canadian myself, they weren't initially a significant part of my musical preferences during their peak years. at the 3:25 min mark the 2nd major transition and 4th real "Tom progression"...Neil goes ..."UP" and makes it work. who else does that? loved this version of this song for over 2 decades now. All are master musicians and just worked so well together. Alex is just soooo dang hilarious.
Just love that Neil played his entire large kit. He does the 'up' fill on several songs of that era. I specifically learned that from him and incorporated it into my playing. Thanks for watching.
During this tour, every time they played this song, they had the break where Alex takes the mic. He improvised every time. Geddy and Neil never had any idea what he was going to say. You can tell by the looks on their faces during his rant. The same held true at the Hall of Fame, when he did his famous "blah, blah, blah" speech. He HAD a speech prepared, but decided once he got up there to wing it. Again, Geddy and Neil had no idea that was going to happen. Alex is a funny, funny guy.
Alex's improvisation during performances, adds a unique and spontaneous element to their shows. His ability to keep Geddy and Neil on their toes, as seen by their reactions, highlights his comedic talent and the chemistry between the band members. Of all the recorded versions of this song, this is far and away the best version. If nothing more than Alex's rant on this one. Folding the mention of the Getz/Gilberto album, and Geddy's addition of "The Girl From Ipanema " made for comedic gold!

Great reaction. I saw that tour in W.P.B. fl. yeah Alex did a funny skit like that but talking about driving, on alligator alley, and this shark fish flew in his window, and some other craziness something close to that lol. Was my best of all tours expect their very last tour, I didn't know that would be all of them. I think 13 cities. for decades seeing them live and growing old oldish, lol, it was like saying goodbye to a great friend, now you know you will never see again. Sometime do the live in Cleveland 2011 version its an overhaul sound difference an upgrade to this one back 2004 you have to see to experience what the tightness from years of playing it that makes shine so great (all) go up! in that performance

Oddly, even as a Canadian drummer (I was into completely different music) I was late the RUSH game. I was stuck on Classic punk rock, the Who, Zep, Deep Purple et all. @@llarose There's a video on TH-cam called the best outro ever and it's the two encores, La Villa and Working Man from the Time Machine gig in Cleveland and the pair may be the best live versions of both songs imo, especially Working Man where Alex go's absolutely nuts on the guitar. 😊
I think a technical analysis of this song would be better if you used the studio version of the song from the 1978 "Hemispheres" album. Unrelated, Peart's reversion to the traditional grip - and his change to his drum kit - happened when Steve Smith recommended that he take lessons from jazz great, Freddie Gruber. AND, his revamping of his drumming and increased use of the traditional grip resulted in his reconfiguration of the left side of his kit (it became impossible to use the concert toms on the left because you have to roll your left hand over just to hit them and you lose speed and control). All these changes began when he was making the "Burnin' for Buddy" double album in 1989, long before the tragic loss of his daughter and, later, his first wife.
Using the studio version for a technical analysis sounds like a great idea. It provides a clearer representation of the composition and allows for a deeper dive into the musicianship. Peart's evolution as a drummer, influenced by legendary figures like Freddie Gruber, adds another layer of appreciation to his skill and dedication to his craft. Thanks for watching.
La Villa Strangiato was actually like 6 or 7 different parts, all based on Alexs dreams 😂😂. Seriously. So it was funny to watch him go 'off script' at that 1 part. Great video!
