  • Join us aboard Mermaid Monster this week for a few days of absolute chaos and problem solving. We had so many random mishaps. This is not typical for us at this point. Have you ever seen that movie Alexander had a very bad, no good rotten day or whatever it’s called? It was like that! I believe the title of this episode tells it all. Despite the craziness, it still ended up being a great few days. That’s the funny things about boating, as I was watching this footage I had literally forgotten cutting my finger, Roo throwing up and catching the fish trap at the end. The only real problem I remember was hooking the cable. I would say at this point we are pretty darn experienced but we are also juggling 3 kids, 2 dogs (you haven’t met our newest addition yet) and all that comes with running a boat and a business. I think we are doing a fantastic job at it all. We hope you enjoy this episode you guys. Please feel free to say hi in the comments below. Remember to be nice, because the kids are reading these comments now. Tune in every Sunday at 9am! Cheers!

If you don’t have problems, mishaps, and accidents while boating, it means your boat is at the dock. I was always learning. Just learn from those things. Love the channel, Brook you’re smart as well as cute. The kids and dog are so much a part of why I watch also. Braden is not to proud to admit problems. This channel is real life and I LOVE it.

As a telco employee and a boater. If you call NOAA with your GPs location they will connect you to the utility that owns the cable you are snagged on.
Many times they will collect your info, ask you how much your ground tackle cost. Then ask you to ditch it. They will mail you a check for replacement gear.
It’s a lot cheaper to buy someone a new anchor then get a cable repair ship dispatched and fix a damaged undersea cable.
We actually had a container ship snag one of our this summer. They chose to yank it back up rather than ditch it. It cost us several million dollars to repair the fiber optic cable.

Chef Penn is back! Mishaps are common on land around my place. I tore my rotator cuff which required surgery and a minimum 6 month rehab. (Don't do that!) I would love to say I had a spectacular mountain biking accident, but in reality I fell over the floor jack working on my car ! You guys are doing great running your boat and raising your family. What memories you have to cherish. Thanks for sharing them.

Schematic’s is the word you were searching for, I think… for the papers telling you where all the wires, etc. go. Honestly, you guy’s are the only channel that I consistently watch, besides a few sailing ones, but I would imagine that most of the people just beginning to start cruising around with a motorboat have your channel as their main go-to place for “solutions”, like how to get a cable off the anchor!! 🍀

Good thinking Brook, great job! I for one am grateful you decided to share this. Our boating experience is primarily was in the California Delta, where the channels are pretty narrow. When there is an underwater hazards it is posted with giant signs on each side of the levy. We are now embarking on #BoatLife on the east coast, so thank you for sharing another thing to look out for while anchoring.

I had a very similar dumb experience in Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua years ago.
We usually would Med-moor on the front dock but was completely full as was the outside anchorage. So I pulled around to the right side of the dockyard where more boats including a sailboat fleet were also Med-moored. There was sufficient depth so I dropped our anchor. Every thing was fine until the morning when I tried to haul up the anchor. As it came up the was strain on the windlass and my 100k pound sailboat was pulled bow down. I went foreword to investigate as my chain counter said the anchor had surfaced. It had as well as an ancient chain. Like you I passed a line under the chain and tied it off, the redeployed the anchor, and dropped the chain and retrieved the anchor. As I found out later this entire area was covered with a nest of chains which has been used a century before for keel hauling their ships to clean and re-copper the bottoms. Was shown on the harbor chart.

Any time you anchor in an area with a long history of boat anchoring, it’s best to picture dropping the anchor into a junk pile. Our anchor got fouled in Grenada in around 20 feet of water that was murky at best. I got in my dive gear and felt my way down the chain. At the bottom I found our anchor had slid under a loop of chain that was attached to a large engine block. You are lucky the cable didn’t break, that can be an expensive repair bill to pay. We were about a week behind you going south. We saw a boat anchored in that cable area at Sandy Hook and almost anchored there. Eric saw the cable area just in time. I could see how you missed it. Good to hear your method of getting loose. We do something similar with our Rocna. For our future knowledge…. How did you know it wasn’t a live electrical line? Glad you didn’t have to ditch your anchor!

21:10 Oooh I had a similar cut with my chefs' knife, on my left index finger (totally my fault). It cut about 3/4 of the way around and through the finger. I went into an urgent care place and got stitches, but after a few years, I still don't have full sensation :-/ You seemed to handle it well; I came close to passing out when the doctor was putting the stitches in... pretty typical according to him.

@lordabhiking.. 10-years of seeing TH-cam videos of charters, professional navies, coast guard and very experienced sailors (sail & mv) make mistakes. It’s part of the 3-d world of boating. You don’t give up or stop when you make a mistake in their world, you learn from it and become a better sailor. Watched a young couple, with no experience, hire an experienced yachtsman(licensed ships master) whom then took their newly purchased sail boat into a lowering bridge gate in Florida. This ended their sailing experience before it could even began as it took down the main and caused structural damage to the boat. Now that was a mistake by a 30-year sailing veteran. I see nothing but caution, care and learning from this couple as they live their life on the water.
