There were other angles, in particular one from the opposite endzone, right in line with the sideline referee. That perspective shows the cornerback's grab and how the Wide Receiver's sideline momentum abruptly stops.
No rooting interest in the game, so I think I can speak fairly. Looked like a hold to me, but I've seen worse go uncalled. It was a tough call, but it's not like that alone propelled BYU into field goal range. Utah still had plenty of chances to make a stop after that play. The officials also didn't cause Utah to get shut out in second half and blow a double digit lead.
I’m a byu fan, and I’ve watched every angle I could find of this call. I wanted to see if it really was a hold or if we had “gotten away with one.” On this one, it really does look like he was held as he was about to break to the sideline and the cb was beat. More egregious holds may go uncalled, but I think it’s just because they were missed. This one happened right in front of the side judge, and byu was just lucky one of the refs saw it.
A different video caught the two coaches giving a hug (even more than a handshake) before the clip where the Utah coach (Whittingham) is yelling at the referees. So the BYU coach (Sitake) did NOT get snubbed by Kyle Whittingham. Sitake used to be the defensive coordinator at the UofU, working with Kyle Whittingham.
Yeah grabbed his outside shoulder. Jamming is find, grabbing and holding is not. Can't rely on "sometimes they don't call it" in that moment, can't win only scoring in the second quarter either.
This is what I figured - I wouldn't be surprised if the ref saw him grab a jersey. Contact is one thing, but when the defender grabs a jersey that's going to draw a flag. I tend not to judge refs on close, judgement calls that are made in real time. You can see by the reactions here, it's legitimately debatable, and if it's debatable even watching a reply, it's not something to second guess in real time.
Part of the problem is it is beyond this one questionable call. The refs gave them the "Time-Out" after the 4th down after the play for BYU ended or was a bust. I have been in a lot of games where the Ref won't give the "Time-Out" as it was not called in time. They just say you have to call it earlier. So the "Time-Out" re-do, then they just have the automatic first down (even though that may have been the right call given it was beyond 5 yards down the field). That "Time-Out" should have been denied (game over)
So the deep flank (Field Judge in this case) has only one job when the defender is in press coverage. He has the #1 receiver and is watching him and the defender. You can clearly see that the DB gets juked and as the WR pulls away, his shoulder dips and he loses his balance. That's an indicator that the DB pulled on the WR to keep him from getting open. The angle the FJ has is perfect to see the pulling action. Looks like he let that go, but the DB grabbed again and that's when the flag came out. Also if you watch the QB, that receiver was his primary target. He had to hold the ball longer because his WR was being held.
Exactly. That ref would not even know if the Utah line was about to crunch the QB or not. He would just be watching for a hold, which he has to call regardless, or PI which he may not have to call if the ball is not delivered.
excelent explination its a solid call especially becasue the qb dropped back like he was going to pass the ball. thats coming from a NCAA side judge too
Or the WR acted like he got pulled harder than he did because it's fourth and he wants a call. I don't even like Utah but looking at the angles that was an acting job by the Reciever, ref should be smarter than that. Most refs don't make that mistake because they understand the situation.
I figure even the most diehard fans have to admit that the ref on the field has a better angle than the salty coach, and certainly better than home viewers trying to decipher 12 pixels of zoomed in microfootage.
I’m sure someone said this already, but for Jomboy’s personal knowledge, Sitake (BYU’s HC) was Whittingham’s (Utah’s HC) longtime D coordinator. That smile by him was pretty funny. Kinda like when you get older and you see your dad go off on someone, and you’re old enough to know he’s kind acting like a lunatic.
I heard alot about this. After seeing it, i dont see the controversy. Looks like a jersy pull. Ref with a view called it instantly. Can be mad about that. Be mad at your team for letting the drive happen.
@@selfishstockton6123 Maybe the fact that they had a double digit lead in this game that started with a TD for them off a blown call, got shut out in the second half, and STILL tried to blame the loss solely on the officiating? Keep up dude, it's not hard to comprehend that OP is saying that if they maybe started playing better they wouldn't feel like they'd need to blame the refs for losing them games 🙄 I'm not a fan of either team, so being unbiased is easy. He’s like a 10-year-old blaming his controller because he sucks at Call of Duty.
The only thing that would’ve made this game better for a BYU fan is if Utah had scored on the final kickoff return-only for it to be called back because Mark Harlan (certified 🤡) walked onto the field.
I’m a fan of neither team But Utah Absolutely got screwed this Game They need to quit fining Coaches and ADs for Saying the refs Suck also because We need more coaches to step up and shame these refs in order to hold them accountable
@@randstokes5048 if you get the chance to see the whole game you will see that Utah actually didn't get screwed (on average...haha). There was a facemask call against BYU that resulted in Utah scoring when looked at later was discovered not to be a facemask. It went both ways all game. Utah is just upset that the final call didn't go their way but is happy to ignore the other ones that did help them.
Utah fan here, and I agree that it would have been perfect karma if Utah had succeeded in that kickoff and Harlan cost us the game. Oh, and it was a hold (there is another angle on Twitter that shows it pretty well), and that was a catch.
As a Ute Alum and former student athlete I couldn't be more proud of what UofU has become over the years and all their success. As tough as any loss can be, BYU has the opportunity to compete for a national title. Frankly, I would love to see BYU play Oregon for the Ship! Utah sports are elite now and the focus should be on the players and their success, not the officials. One call at the end of the game can clealry make the difference, but all calls throughout the game are deciding factors. In this case, BYU did what they needed to do to win. Remember, BYU didn't start the game well having 2 offside calls which is half of what they had all season. My point is this is a rivalry game with lots of passion, energy and guys make mistakes, even a holding call on 4th and 10. Tough call to make, but BYU still marched down the field and coverted a field goal for the win. Congratulations BYU on a great season, make the state of Utah proud and keep winning.
Terrible conference and bad competition makes your claim of elite a joke. So you are glad the official made a bad call if it gets BYU in the playoffs. Your ship is crashing just like BYU will get blown out if they make the playoffs.
It's easy to look elite when your competition is subpar, actually below subpar. Come play Texas, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, get away from those slow footed teams , you might find 8-0 a little harder to achieve. Would love to see what byu record would be if they played say Florida schedule. I'm not a Florida fan but they had a tough schedule this year.
@@jimmybrowning4888 BYU has number 2 strength of record right now. Last time we played an SEC team we beat Tennessee in their own house. Beat Arkansas recently as well. SEC is the best conference but these teams aren't unbeatable. Simulations show that we would narrowly beat Texas A&M, barely lose to Georgia, etc.
I was hoping you would do this video! Love your work! I've read several comments from people who were at the game, including Utah fans, who claim there was a replay on the jumbotron that showed it was clearly holding. Some context: this is a rivalry that, to diehard fans, is so important.
Why is Utah playing bump and run coverage on 4th down with 1:35 left from their opponents 19 yard line??? Their coaches set that kid up to hold on that play!
Neither of these angles really show the hold. Look up the tweet from terry mcaulay (20 year NFL ref who reffed 3 super bowls) and you can see a better angle and him saying it was a foul. Sucks for Utah but that’s a hold
The only real argument is that refs generally don’t call holding at the end of games but even that is a weak argument. Utah showed their whole behinds this weekend.
It was. I can understand the frustration in consistency, only 3 holds or DPI penalties were thrown all game and those were all egregious, but you have to always play as clean as you can until the clock hits 0
You have no idea how much I needed this breakdown. First time I was at a game for a breakdown. As a Utah fan, the last two minutes of this game live was the most infuriating 2 min of my life. But seeing this breakdown, while my frustrations are still there, seeing the slow mo and all that Jazz, there's a little bit of closure. Thanks Jimmy!
I don't think it was about 1 play. This guy started too far into the game. He could have started 2 plays earlier and understood why AD was pissed. How about intentional grounding no call? He was getting hustled and threw it out toward no one while in the tackle box. Also, missed holds by BYU on 2nd and 3rd downs. Tackle on the right grabs wrist as ute defender blows by...no call. I am glad a streak was not lost by BYU but winning this way? Seems obvious refs had it in for being "fired" by pac 12 if that is true.
Ute fan here and that was 100% holding. I get that it goes uncalled a lot of the time. But it was still the right call. Whether they call it or not depends on what the refs at any given moment. Utah got shut out in the second half. That’s the real reason they lost.
Utah left BYU behind when they won the Pac12 lottery pick. BYU a better choice at the time but we're a religious school. They start treating us like we're an FCS team. 14 years of conference smack and recruiting advantages over BYU. They beat us 11 straight (most of which were one possession games and many controversial calls that went Utah's way). They actually believed they were on the verge of being a true national powerhouse, even though they were beating up on a very bad Pac12 conference where their physical style of play works against Pac12 finesse style of play. Then the last 15 months happened... Pac12 implodes. Utah is the last holdout. They insult the Big12. The Big12 still throws them a lifeline. They begrudgingly join the Big12 and they all believe they're going to own the Big12 on their way to the Big10. Then the games are actually played and they lose 4 in a row to mediocre teams. Then they lose to their rival for the second time in a row. Not so easy when you're on equal footing. They haven't beat BYU in over 5 years. BYU now has the NIL advantage, culture advantage, and scoreboard advantage. That's why Harlan and Kyle are crying in disbelief. 14 years of undeserved advantages disappearing seemingly over night. You love to see it. I'll add one more thing: that game shouldn't have even been close. We had a phantom facemask called on a sack that eventually led to a Utah TD. We had a pick in our DBs hands but he got greedy and overplayed it hoping to score 6. We had a field goal at the end of the second half but the clock operator bled the clock below 10 seconds and our false start caused a clock run off. Utah was lucky about all those things. They were lucky the game was at RES. We should have won by at least two possessions. Better luck next time Utes. You're done.
The Utah AD conveniently forgot to mention the phantom facemask penalty that was called against BYU on a third down sack that kept a Utah drive alive and led to a touchdown. Replays showed the defender grabbed below the facemask. That was a much worse call than the ticky tack holding call, but the Utah AD didn’t mention that one.
Much worse call than a call that gave a first down after a phantom timeout. Two safety’s back to back dude. You had an intentional ground on 2 or 3rd down didn’t get called either. You proved blind deaf and dumb ref point tho so thanks zooby
You say it was a terrible call but only because you watched it on TV repeated 30 times zoomed in in slow motion. Any ref would have called that. His head ripped back and his hand was right under the mask. Call something in real time and we will see how confident you are then genius.
@@tomjones2056 You are literally the only one arguing that there wasn't a time-out called. It's right there at 1:23 in this video. Also they didn't get a first down from the timeout. They got a timeout and continued on with 4th down.
actually, the call could have went 50/50. The way the game was refereed up to that point would indicate that was not a hold. Refereeing defensive cornerbacks is a tough/gray area. If you look at the totality of the game and how it was refed up to that moment, this should not have been called. That is where the outrage is and rightfully so. Nonetheless, Utah coach and AD should have taken it private instead of public.
Your allowed to give an initial bump on defense off the line but re-engaging right after that bump is holding you can see how he tried to pull him off balance the call was right!

The major problem here is there are no ramifications for bad officiating in all sports. You can’t criticize officials at all, yet you see bad calls all the time and those calls affect momentum and most of the time the outcome. Officials need to be held accountable period
Utah should have won this game, but they let emotion get the better of them and it started with their coach! The holding call could have gone either way, but from that moment, Utah played like they should have won and BYU did just enough. The catch was clearly a catch and all the broadcasters said so, but they reviewed it anyway. Utah's defense went from dominating at the goal line to playing prevent down the field. They allowed that one call to determine the game.
As a heartbroken Utah fan, my thoughts: If the call could go either way, he could keep the flag in his pocket and all but guarantee a loss for BYU. And they would be rightfully pissed. If he throws it, Utah will be pissed, and rightfully claim that a subjective call gave BYU new life. But they will at least have the chance to win it cleanly themselves. By inserting himself, he actually prevented the refs from deciding the game. As much as it hurts, that's really the outcome we all want.
It's not the initial contact. But when the receiver goes to cut back to the outside (his left), you see the receivers left shoulder drop from the defender pulling on that shoulder then he lets go. It happens very quickly and is very hard to see live. I believe that was the reason we saw a holding on that play.
Yep. The ref doesn’t even flag the second instance of contact, it’s only just as he gets past the 5 yard from scrimmage marker where that contact becomes illegal. That definitely wasn’t a catch though… but it was called a catch on the field so they need solid proof to overturn it.
This was a hold. The AD is also a joke, going after the ref for what a deep official called. The AD seems to have as bright of a future as the UofU cold fusion program.

@@phillipcook3430 Regardless of the way the ref had called it up to that point, it was a hold. If the ref was making mistakes, then corrected them, it's still holding. The defender's arm went over the back and it looked like he grabbed on. The ref might not be good at catching holds but if he sees a legit hold and calls it, that's not on the ref. That's on the player.
@@phillipcook3430I agree it was a 50/50 call, but it was called. So let’s say hypothetically there was a review on penalties. They would have reviewed it and said there is not enough to over turn it. If anything it was a well ref’d game. They did miss that facemask call in the first half though.
False. With that said, Utah had multiple chances to win the game but no offensive line holding calls were egregious on the final drive by byu because they were guilty of holding the defensive players on multiple plays on the final drive that byu should have been called for.
@@ancho-31337 That isn't how it works. You can't assume that the QB could not have thrown the ball to that receiver before the play is dead. Keep trying to come up with reasons why the Utes lost. May I suggest one? After the holding call, BYU had 2 flags thrown against them. Utes had zero, and yet we got in field goal range. You lost because you didn't stop BYU's offensive drive. And here is a bonus reason Utes lost. BYU defense stopped the Utes from scoring a single point in the second half.
This is what makes the Holy War the best rivalry in CFB. The endings are often wild and controversial, and plenty of people get overly upset and make fools of themselves. Good stuff
I'm not a fan of either team. I've lived in Utah and Alabama, and the hatred and vitriol in the Holy War is far beyond anything I encountered in the South
Yeah hearing the ESPN announcers go “this is one of the closest games in the rivalry” Sir I can remember at least four games that were this down to the wire of the top of my head and I don’t even watch all of them
As Joel Klatt noted, it doesn't matter as much whether it was holding as the call could have gone either way. What's more important is they hadn't been calling holding/DPI all game and suddenly did on that 50/50 play, which is what makes it particularly egregious. It's somewhat equivalent to an ump with a wide zone consistently calling a strike even if it's an inch or two off the plate but then suddenly in a 3-2 count with bases loaded in the 9th and 2 outs he calls a ball on a pitch that was half on/half off the plate.
@JomboyMedia Like you said only the referee knows what he saw. But Here's What we all saw We saw a team and their AD Mark Harlan & Ute Fans celebrating because they had won the game already! When you think you already won something and it's not over you feel like it was stolen from you! Dear Utah AD & Staff & Fans You don't win the game until the clock is at 0:00 in the 4th Quarter!
Living in Utah I've seen many Utah games in pubs or public places with crowds of Utah fan's and they bitch and moan at the officials on and after every play. If the officials make a bad call in favor of Utah, they turn into sgt. Schultz on Hogan's hero's 'I saw nothing, nothing' but boy if it's even a good call against them, they crap their pampers. They don't cry about the officials costing them games, they cry that the officials aren't winning the games for them. THAT WAS ABSOLUTELY HOLDING. Oh and one other thing, THAT WAS ABSOLUTELY NOT A FACE MASK in the first half, you know, that gave them 25 yards and a TD.
well I want to emphasize on something, in no way shape or form am I attacking their football program because it is an excellent program, I am, however, attacking their fan base.
The holding call was weak. Should have been a no call. Defensive holding, pass interference, and offensive holding are three of the most controversial calls in college football. They truly are hard to define at times. It’s kind of like left up to the discretion of the referees as to where it will or will not be called on any given play. I do not think that refs want a call to make a difference in the game. In this case, the defensive holding penalty definitely made a difference. An automatic first down instead of a turnover on downs.
it was within 5 yards of the line scrimmage which makes it not a hold per the rules of the game. a defender can lay receiver out and sit on him as long as it's within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. Did everyone forget this basic football knowledge?
@@mrkennady you’re absolutely wrong. The rule you’re referring to is for illegal contact, the penalty called was for defense holding. Why was he called for defense holding and not illegal contact? Because illegal contact is not in the NCAA rulebook. So the official was absolutely correct in the call of holding and the Utah defender did commit the penalty. But even if the NCAA had illegal contact as a possible penalty, the Utah defender would still be in violation. Why? In the NFL, if a defender loses contact within the 5 yard space and he makes contact again, it’s a penalty for illegal contact. So maybe instead of trying to call anyone out for not knowing “basic” rules, you can actually learn them first, yourself.
You can see the receiver's body being pulled towards the ground from the first contact. His momentum and direction were altered because of it. That his defense holding.
@@Shermfromjackson yes but it can ALSO dip when not being yanked down. As in making a cut changing levels etc. Can it not? It wasn’t the shoulder dip itself that made the call it was the tugging of the shoulder to MAKE it dip that made them call it
Thanks for the hilarious commentary on this game. My office mate and I were chuckling pretty good over your remarks, especially on the BYU bromance scene between Retzlaff and Batty. LOL! You did not include the camera angle that showed Harlan walking ONTO the field while the Utes took that last kickoff and began their lateral-fest. It shows Harlan walk onto the field and the official turn and see him and throw that last flag. Also - did anyone else notice the game clock stood still at 4 seconds left as the Utes received the kickoff, ran around lateralling the ball for like 15 seconds, and then the game clock started once the BYU player jumped on top of the loose football to end the game? Seriously the most bizarre last 3 minutes of football I've ever witnessed in my life.
Yea it's the right call, the reason he didn't call it off the beginning grabbing is because within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage you're allowed to be pretty much as physical as you want apart from literally taking the reciever to the ground, so when the ref saw they were past 5 yards and the dude was still yanking on him he threw the flag. Yes people will blame refs for this and if it was me as a ref there personally I wouldn't make the call, but at the same time I completely understand people who would say "no that's just a dumb play by the defender so it deserved to be called". Either way it wasn't the refs fault quite frankly, he did his job even if you don't agree with the circumstances of the call you can't argue the fact he was holding him.
Utah being 15th in the conference standings is way more egregious than a no holding call. Their whole season and team from the athletic director down to the water boy is a disaster and embarrassing.
The Utah defender did himself no favors by being excessively grabby and flirting with the line. He put the decision in the hands of the official, never a wise choice. ... Also, BYU never would have had enough time to mount a comeback drive if Utah had played the clock better on its previous possessions. The last Ute drive started in Cougar territory and got to 3rd & 1 at the BYU 40 before Utah went offensive holding, short completion, delay of game, false start, and then punt-only taking 2:42 off the clock. That's loserball.
Wrong. That is exactly what a db is taught to do when a receiver tries to gain inside leverage when the D is set up for outside leverage. You redirect with arms and body check. I didn't see a hold, but we are watching from an angle where the Corner's hands are out of sight.
Utah is upset about officiating? Go look at the 2021 and 2022 regular season games against USC. Utah isn’t allowed to complain about officiating they get bailed out so much by the refs.
Terry McAulay, an extremely experienced NFL AND NCAA ref (Google him) tweeted this: "It’s a foul. It’s always been a foul and it will always be a foul regardless of game, time, score, or situation. The embarrassing and shameless on-field actions and press conference rant of the Utah AD should result in severe consequences. His behavior was despicable."

He had been Utahs AD for 12 years and never once said something like that. Not only was the holding call terrible (especially on 4th and 10 end of game) but before that, on Utahs last drive, they got a horrible spot and a questionable holding call on a TE. I did like Snowdens reaction post game more if anyone has seen that.
@dash4800 nobody mentioned the other crap called before this. Also lots of people seem to not know how press coverage is called 99 percent of the time. Look at any snap in man coverage it could be called. Not to mention it just happened to be the game saving play for the big 12s only top 10 team. This is why the NCAA should hire refs not the conferences
There was another interesting call at the end of the 1st half which is relevant here: with 3:00 left in the 2nd qtr, Utah had a 1st & 10 at midfield and the QB got sacked. It looked (live) like he had been pulled down by his face mask. There were two back judges who had the play right in front of them-one of them was this Asian (head) ref who did not throw a flag, but the other one did. They came together for a brief chat, and the head ref took the other guy’s word for it and enforced the penalty. But the replay showed this was clearly not a face mask-the defender had his hand under the QB’s chin and pulled him down by the jersey/pads. It should’ve been 2nd &18 in their own territory, instead it was a 1st down at the BYU 30, and Utah scored a td 3 plays later to give them an 11-pt ht lead. The holding call at the end of the game could’ve gone either way, but this call significantly benefited Utah and it’s interesting how they’ve forgotten all about it. And I’m completely impartial here.
Look again. His head whipped around when he grabbed the bottom bar of his facemask. You can see that he couldn't get his head up as he was going down. Correct call.
Utah fan here. There were a lot of calls that Utah didn't get called on them. Just watch the game. We did a play by play slow motion count. Counted 3 times as many no calls on Utah than BYU so I'd say it was probably fair. I mean honestly speaking, I think we did pretty good against BYU staying close to them. I'm not sad. It was a great game to was. Emotional rollercoaster! Those are the games we talk about forever. We'll get you next time Poogers!

C’mon man…this wasn’t ‘controversial’…it was a flag for holding that was 50/50 call. That was the basis for this whole thing?? Some AD whining doesn’t create controversy.
The refs didn’t lose the game, Utah lost the game. If you allow a team to march downfield and score a field goal in under 90 seconds, you had that coming.
Terry McAulay, a former NFL referee and current rules analyst with an esteemed résumé, including officiating three Super Bowls. McAulay gave his take after reviewing various angles of the play. He unequivocally affirmed, “It’s a foul. It’s always been a foul and will always be a foul regardless of game, time, score, or situation.”
I watched this live on tv and it was kind of funny how no mention of a penalty until about 30 seconds after the play. Also I didn't see anything that wouldn't normally be a no call. Also the QB was under duress and wouldn't of even thrown the ball to him even if he was completely open. BAD CALL.
They could call that 20 times a game if they wanted to is the thing. Calling it on 4th and 10 on a play that should have ended the game is insane. (Also, it didn't affect the play) Let the guys play. 🤷
It was unsportsmanlike conduct for the AD to talk/scream at the officials, only the Head Coach can question the call on the field. They should have flagged him. The Referee (R White Hat) did not make any of the calls in question. The AD is a jerk!
I think he was mad that the Referee didn’t overrule the guy who made the call. No excuse…the AD is a jerk. just explaining why I think he was yelling at that particular guy.
I'm so tired of the idea that you can't criticize refs. They're truly the cops of sports. Nothing is ever allowed to hurt their feelings ever. In hockey, the refs will just chirp back. In baseball and football, it's second only to blasphemy to even suggest that a ref isn't capable
I was waiting for this breakdown with all the zoomed in angles of the hold available. Thank you Jomboy.

Amazing how much time there is to be in a winning position in football and they’ll still just blame refs on the level that children will point blame
There was a big 12 youtuber that had an angle opposite of the ref's, you can see a jersey pull when the guy dips. That is probably what the ref saw.
link to video?
Yeah grabbed his outside shoulder. Jamming is find, grabbing and holding is not. Can't rely on "sometimes they don't call it" in that moment, can't win only scoring in the second quarter either.
But nah, it was a "horrible call" because reasons
This guys know ball! Well said
I figure even the most diehard fans have to admit that the ref on the field has a better angle than the salty coach, and certainly better than home viewers trying to decipher 12 pixels of zoomed in microfootage.
Imagine going 1-5 in conference and telling the officials to step up.
So if Utah was winning you would argue otherwise? Wtf

Vanderbilt would beat BYU
It's easy to look elite when your competition is subpar, actually below subpar. Come play Texas, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, get away from those slow footed teams , you might find 8-0 a little harder to achieve.
The first contact is within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. The second contact is past that which is why it’s called

@@phillipcook3430what are you saying? If refs miss a couple of holding calls early in the game they can’t call any?
No you can jam him up and hold him as long you're within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage.
The major problem here is there are no ramifications for bad officiating in all sports. You can’t criticize officials at all, yet you see bad calls all the time and those calls affect momentum and most of the time the outcome. Officials need to be held accountable period
The holding call is TECHNICALLY correct. No ref should EVER pull their flag there.

This is a great breakdown, my god! The iso dual cam was legit.
I’m with you. You can see the body get yanked down. This doesn’t look like a slip and stumble. The ref would have had a pretty good angle on this.
Yep. The ref doesn’t even flag the second instance of contact, it’s only just as he gets past the 5 yard from scrimmage marker where that contact becomes illegal.
That definitely wasn’t a catch though… but it was called a catch on the field so they need solid proof to overturn it.

2:37 definitely holding. Even the other Ute fans around me at the game said it was holding. Sucks, but it’s true.

Is that you Russell B?

Why was he called for defense holding and not illegal contact? Because illegal contact is not in the NCAA rulebook.
So the official was absolutely correct in the call of holding and the Utah defender did commit the penalty.
But even if the NCAA had illegal contact as a possible penalty, the Utah defender would still be in violation. Why? In the NFL, if a defender loses contact within the 5 yard space and he makes contact again, it’s a penalty for illegal contact.
So maybe instead of trying to call anyone out for not knowing “basic” rules, you can actually learn them first, yourself.

Oh man, this is such a great video!!! WELL DONE sir!

Terry McAulay, an extremely experienced NFL AND NCAA ref (Google him) tweeted this:
"It’s a foul. It’s always been a foul and it will always be a foul regardless of game, time, score, or situation.
The embarrassing and shameless on-field actions and press conference rant of the Utah AD should result in severe consequences. His behavior was despicable."
Isn't that the guy that tried to end an NFL game with time left on the clock? If so I'm not really looking at him as a beacon of correct calls...
@@Blindjager I have no idea. Feel free to send a link to an article if you have it. What I do know is that these are his certifications: "Terry McAulay was a NFL referee from 1998-2017. He was the referee for seven conference championship games and three Super Bowls. He is currently NBC’s rules analyst for Sunday Night Football and Notre Dame’s football games; he joined Amazon’s Thursday Night Football crew in 2022. Collegiately, he was a referee in the 1998 BCS National Title game and was the Coordinator of Football Officials for the Big East and AAC from 2008-2017."
@@Blindjager If he had no idea what he was doing, as you seem to insinuate, it's unlikely he would have stuck around for that long and been involved on that many levels. But I'm sure all these disgruntled Ute fans know way better than he does....
@FalafelWaffle81 That argument goes both ways though... of course the official is going to side with the officials getting reamed.
I'm a utah fan. Utah had plenty of opportunities to win this game. Byu deserves the win
They did win. AD is correct.
They really went and fined him an entire new car for saying something slightly mean. I'm glad those rules don't apply to the rest of us.
I totally disagree...good on the AD. He said what needed to be said. That's a real leader...and they will love him in Utah for that!
And one more thing - Whining is not leading
PREACH
Yep. Just because you lost doesn't mean it was someone else's fault.
There are times that you are treated unfairly and it's important to speak up, but all that happened here was that it was tough to lose at the last minute. That doesn't mean you get to blame everyone else.
@@its.that-time99% of people disagree from every comment I've seen on every video about this.
Uath, you can come back to the Pac12!
Why would you want them? They’re probably going to end this season 4-8
U mean pac 2
@@jeddrichards9601 Pac 7.5
Unbelievable…. ESPNU is showing the game rn so I just clicked on it but missed this play by like 2 mins. Sure, I’ll look at it again if I can.
God what horrible clock management by BYU at the end of the half. This game was so exciting yet so ugly.
Clearly, the Lord loves BYU more than Utah.
I think it's "loveth"-
Utah fan here.
According to the Salt Lake Tribune who is the source of unbiased truth in Utah. The referee got it right. They show other views shared on social media.
Next time score enough points that the refs can’t decide the game for you😉
There are much better angles from cell phones in the crowd. The call was correct
That's holding--all day! Good call, ref! The Utah AD should be fired immediately for misconduct!
"There's holding on every play in football, just a matter of whether they call it or not"- John Madden
What a whiner. Utah lost the game.
Coaches sure, but I've never seen an athletic director give post-game comments to the media.
They're always holding. But that play was just some hands at the beginning of the route. See that all the time.
Right after the beginning of the route, the DB pulls him, the receiver almost falls down and that's what the ref called holding.
Yes it's a hold you can see him being pulled towards the ground. I'm sure it made it so that it was hard for the BYU quarterback to see him
The defenders pulling him to the ground made it hard for the QB to see him
Even the "rules official" they called in during the tv broadcast was "oh yeah that's a hold, no question".
They were hand fighting within 5 yards. It’s legal. No hold
exactly it’s just contact
I watched this live on tv and it was kind of funny how no mention of a penalty until about 30 seconds after the play. Also I didn't see anything that wouldn't normally be a no call. Also the QB was under duress and wouldn't of even thrown the ball to him even if he was completely open. BAD CALL.
He pulled him down by the shoulder pad
That’s your ranking administrator for all university athletics? The designated adult for all the designated adults?
Good luck, Utah.
Look at that hold from the angle from the end zone, it was clearly a hold.
They could call that 20 times a game if they wanted to is the thing. Calling it on 4th and 10 on a play that should have ended the game is insane. (Also, it didn't affect the play) Let the guys play. 🤷
@@its.that-time But it did affect the play. Made the receiver unavailable for the pass, BYJew clearly looked to him and saw it wasn't an option.
@jonathanplatt5027 it wasn't an option because he got jammed at the line, it's called press coverage
If what the Utah cb did was holding, then the BYU right tackle at 5:05 was holding also.
Looks like the CB pulled the WR's arm down, throwing him off balance and he sold it. Put up points and don't let refs beat you..
No excuse…the AD is a jerk. just explaining why I think he was yelling at that particular guy.
the arm around the neck looks like holding to me, don't have a good enough angle to see if it wasn't contact
This is the first time ive seen "ball do lie" 😂😂
Very nice work on this! Props!
I'm so tired of the idea that you can't criticize refs. They're truly the cops of sports. Nothing is ever allowed to hurt their feelings ever. In hockey, the refs will just chirp back. In baseball and football, it's second only to blasphemy to even suggest that a ref isn't capable
Dismal yards and no points in the second half lost this game for the U. You can't do that against an 8-0 team.
