    The photos are way too noisy for the 2000-2500 ISOs used for the daytime games. I recently tested the 100-400 at night baseball games and the ISO was at 6400. There was virtually no noise. It looks to me these photos were underexposed and then brightened in post-production. That will make noise more pronounced. I just want everyone to ignore the noise and look at sharpness. Sharpness looks good for using a 1.4 extender!

      I hope you are right about that because this video killed my hopes for this lens. Terrible results.

      Too Noisy.I think that ISO is up to High for a sunny day.I would of shot these a lot Better and I’m a straight Rookie.

    • @johansmolinski
      @johansmolinski 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is fast moving action. You will need a fast shutter speed to freeze the images. With this lens, which frankly is pretty slow, that means higher ISO.

    • @rogerfleming1121
      @rogerfleming1121 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The camera is ISO-less, so under-exposing and brightening in post should not make much difference with respect to just raising the ISO. A different way around the noise would be to try lengthening the exposure a little. But long story short, I don't think this lens + teleconverter is going to work well for very fast action in very low light.
      By the way, I don't think this is a Sony issue. The problem is just the f/8. Canon would behave similarly.

  • @BikeVisionScotland
    @BikeVisionScotland 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don't mind some noise in my images, (can reduce this in post) as long as it means getting the shot and are reasonably sharp.
    Looking forward to using the 1.4x Teleconverter when it arrives, with my A7RIII and 100-400GM lens... Thanks for posting this video.

    Great review, images seem a little noisy for my taste. Wondering if the 70-200 2.8 cropped would be a better choice? Good job on the review though, keep up the good work. 👍📸📸👍

      @designsbydm1519 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      leicanoct true, another reason why you would use a 70-200 and crop it. I get it though, he is just reviewing this lens with converter wich I would say is not good enough quality for my taste.

  • @k8wxq0
    @k8wxq0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your shots still looked pretty sharp without the converter in the lower light. Before dropping $2500 on that lens, I really appreciate your examples and want to get your opinion if this lens can handle low light well with today’s high ISO cameras. From this video, it seems like the pictures are pretty good, but maybe the autofocus hunts more often for video.

    I think a better test of the low light AF capabilities would have been with the A9 body as that is apparently more suited to fast moving sports photography. I have the A7Riii and the 100-400 with the 1.4x TC and I use it for wildlife where the subject may sometimes move quickly and erratically but over much shorter distances. The AF in low light with this combination in a non sports environment is truly excellent.
    I like your videos very much, please keep them coming.

  • @klaymoon1
    @klaymoon1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why don't you compare the crop mode vs 1.4 TC? For sport at least, you may get a better result with the crop because you get more light.

    I have the A7RIII and the 100-400 and have been considering the 1.4 I notice that your spoken impressions were all made while you were still out in the field. Did seeing the resulting images on a larger, higher resolution screen impact your impressions at all? Very much appreciate the video, thanks!

    Wow! I’ve been looking for a low light test of 100-400! I’m glad you did it here! I’ve been watching your videos and helped me a lot!
    Do you have a video where you used the 100-400 on a6500 on a low light environment shooting from slow to fast shutter speeds?
    that would be awesome to since a lot of people love the 100-400 g-master.

  • @AntonGrimpelhuber
    @AntonGrimpelhuber 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video, but ... what some commenters noted as missing sharpness may just be a lack of contrast in the way you developed the raws. They look too bright to me. Which brings me to a question: you mention "auto tone" in the captions - is that Lightroom's? In that case, that explains it: I find LR's auto correction to produce washed-out developments as a rule.

  • @karlnotyourbusiness4429
    @karlnotyourbusiness4429 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why so grainy? The shutter speed seems very high when the camera and lens stabilisation should mean you can get that down to 1/1000.

      Please test on static subjects that have a lot of detail in them and use low ISO. In the tests for this video, your ISO was so high it was hard to tell if the little bit of softness I was seeing was because of noise reduction, or because of the 1.4 teleconverter

    Thanks for the video. I'm just wondering if the teleconverter is worth the hit in light (1 stop), and if there is any drop off in sharpness, in other words might it be better to crop into a photo taken without the TC?

    Great job in testing. Very informative and helpful. I wondered if you can get your hands on a Sigma 100-400mm and compare it with the Sony 100-400mm. That would be really interesting.

    Like your reviews but shouldn't you be using a location where you are not shooting through a wire fence? Even completely out of focus the wire between the lens and subject could be affecting image quality and that effect will also increase the more acute the angle is that the lens axis makes with the fence.

    • @caseyta88

    Hello,luv your channel-I have a question regarding the 100-400 GM with 1.4 teleconverter,I recently purchased both the 100-400 GM and 1.4 teleconverter for my A7R3 and I noticed that with the lens and converter on the camera body there seems to be a slight amount of flex when twisting the lens and camera body.The camera works fine but just doesn't seem rock solid at the mount.Since you own and use both I thought you would be the best person to ask-Is this normal?I contacted B&H and they said a small amount of flex is normal.Thank you and any help would be appreciated

    How does the A7riii without 1.4 TC but in apsc mode compare to A7iii with the 1.4 TC regarding image quality? 18 MP vs 24 MP... Could be a reason to buy the A7riii over the A7iii, and the price difference will be smaller when you save the money for the TC. Also, switching between APSC an FF is much faster than changing TC. What do you think? Could you compare IQ?

    • @QuietOC
      @QuietOC 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It makes more sense to use an APS-C body instead of a 1.4x teleconverter on full-frame. You get more resolution and better AF performance.

    • @nhtalbot
      @nhtalbot 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel Gerber: I was thinking exactly the same thing. I have seen several camera youtubers recommend the A7RIII over the A7III for that reason.

    • @daenu
      @daenu 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew: for optimal IQ, this lens should be used on FF body in FF mode and without TC.
      We're only talking about how the lens range could be extended when needed. If you do have an additional APS-C body and don't mind the hassle changing the lens back and forth, you could do that. But I'd never buy this lens for APS-C only, it would be a "waste of glass".
      In my opinion, the A7Riii is the best choice, because you can quickly change between APS-C and FF modes.

    Why don't you talk about the pictures after you have taken them? Explain what you thought was crisp. Why some may not be. Your videos really do seem to lack a lot of "meat." They are sort of fluff pieces that don't offer a lit of detail.
