  • On any excursion or tour, there is that moment right before the guide begins to speak where you cross your fingers and wonder, "Is this a good tour guide?"
Most times, it is. At Christiansborg Castle -- she wasn't.
I can roll with the punches and it takes a lot to get me upset -- but there are a few things that, regardless of culture or language or tradition, make me crazy mad.
One of those things is racism -- even if it's tongue-in-cheek.
Needless to say, I had a hard time liking this tour despite the beautiful buildings and the fact that my ancestors were part of the Scandinavian diaspora of the early 1900s -- and I had thought this would be a homecoming of sorts.
    It wasn't.
Now I'm sure that there are probably hundreds of tour guides at this attraction that are perfectly wonderful and professional, so this video is not about those ones. This video is about a beautiful castle and the low-fi passive aggressive ambivalence and creepy comment our tour guide had about their 200-year-long historic role in the Africa-to-Americas slave trade.
    Grrr.

Sometimes cultural racism is so ingrained that they don't even know it. Goods? People aren't shipping goods! You expect more from people in Denmark,, I don't blame you for not wanting to be on the tour after that

I wouldn't take what the tour guide said to heart bc the era of that time was slavery throughout the entire world.
    But, job well done!

Yes, I’m sure that it is! I just had a less-than-awesome interaction with our guide. Everyone else was very kind and welcoming. :)
