  • In the 1970s Lonnie Frisbee became widely known as California’s “hippie preacher,” the quintessential “Jesus freak” whose pictures frequented such magazines as Time and Life as the media told the story of a burgeoning “Jesus movement” across North America. Lonnie was part of one of the first Christian hippie outposts in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district before joining the fledgling Calvary Chapel church in Costa Mesa, California. Though he only stayed there for four years, from 1968 to 1971, Lonnie Frisbee was the charismatic sparkplug that launched the “little country church” into a worldwide ministry and propelled some of its then fledgling leaders into some of the most powerful movers and shakers of the evangelical movement.
FRISBEE offers insights as told by Lonnie's friends and family-complemented by rare and unseen archival pictures and film footage. This documentary tells the story of a simple man whom God empowered to fulfill a grand purpose, and who suffered mistreatment by his spiritual overseers because of his honesty and his struggles. For anyone who has suffered the abuses of organized religion but still wants to hold on to faith, Lonnie Frisbee’s life is a testament that God still finds favor among regular everyday people.

Best honest and raw documentary yet. God chooses the foolish things of this world to confound the wise. God has always had to choose flawed humans to do his will. Lonnie Frisbee’s anointing changed my life in the 70s. Glory be to God!

We are all flawed human beings, and we will always be. It's only by the grace of God through Christ that we are even justified. But as God's born-again believers, we are to walk in newness of the life that He has bestowed on us. We must let the world know that it is dying, and the fashion of this world will pass away. Only love will remain, and the one truth and the one love that can be understood, is Christ's, not the love that the world gives, which is the false love, and it will pass away along with it.

If the person that was trying to diminish him because of his bisexuality thinks that he/she is not flawed that person needs to think again. Jesus came because we are all flawed. GLORY TO God in the Highest. I am a sinner. But Jesus" blood redeems me.

As a 3rd year student of a spirit filled Bible College, I'll respectfully & briefly explain...
      1. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God
      (See Acts 2)
      2. The religious spirit is an evil spirit. Yes, they do exist & it's not a joke.
When Jesus walked the earth during His ministry... one-third of His ministry was casting evil spirits (demons) out of people.
It was the Pharisees (not exclusively), who came against Jesus, hated Him & demanded that He be crucified. The Romans carried it out. The Pharisees were one of several religious groups...& in scripture, Jesus called them sons of the devil.
In summary, it is true... a religious spirit is an evil spirit (a demon).

This is a great documentary. I knew Lonnie but not well. I was a bit younger then him and I did not know about the gay issue. When I got older I became aware of my own sexual orientation and I have struggled with it ever since. I have been celibate for almost 39 years now and occasionally I still have gay dreams and some sane sex attraction. As a Christian I realize that this doesn’t go away in this life. Lonnie was as true to Christ as any Christian. We all have sin in our lives and we fall sometimes. Being gay is not a choice. Just like others sins such as envy, gossip, pride, etc., sinfulness is our continuing struggle. Thank God He walks with us, convicts us of sin, forgives us and helps us grow. I have such sadness for Lonnie , but I know he would be so happy that his ministry is being revealed widely and in a sense he is still ministering to many people through his life story.💕❤️🙏✝️

It appears that the 39 years of celibacy..., has been your choice, and with Holy Spirits help, the right choice.
Cowardice, envy, pornography, gossip, jealousy, bitterness, and your struggle ARE INDEED COMMON . Like ALL, and apparently you, taking control of the SOUL, the 'personality' that has been hammered and led to..., by family, culture, & religion..., AND DAILY ACQUIESCING to the Spirit, and what the Spirit has codified in The Word, IS the habit that each believer must learn and grow in!

in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience-among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
      Ephesians 4:22
to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,

The issue of homosexuality and the church’s response is troubling. The relationship between love and correction in ministry and life needs much prayer and God’s guidance. Jesus told the woman caught in adultery to ‘go, sin no more’ Jesus didn’t reject her, but he commanded her to change. That is the goal of love and correction. We are to be transformed in who we are, and in our practices. May God guide all us sinners, in whatever our sin, and May He grant Pastors and Teachers to love in knowledge and wisdom. praise Jesus.

When I first learned about Lonnie through the trailor for "The Jesus Revolution" movie, I then looked up everything I could find on this lovely human being!!! I strongly agree he was not ministered to or helped to fight his own demons and struggles and for that I do feel these pastors and father figures... people he looked up to and would do anything for if asked...let him down and caused more confusion and pain in his heart and mind. I am sure Lonnie has forgiven them for they know not what they do....and I believe Chucks' remarks at the end of Lonnies service were misinterpreted. I may be wrong but my take from his words meant if someone else could have laid healing hands and prayers for the Holy Spirit to not only work through Lonnie but also work in him as He moved throughout this time in others... healing sickness and casting out demonic strongholds.
It is all over and forgiven ...now he is with the Father and teacher that he always longed for! So much love and comfort and peace surround him for eternity. He is so very loved!!!

I remember Charlie Peacock. I knew nothing about him until some people invited me to his last performance before he started his Christian life in earnest. He announced to the packed house that he just turned his life over to Christ before he and his band played for the last time. He was really good, so I’m almost certain his secular audience was sorry to see them go.
Oh, and the 77’s. I saw them at the Warehouse only one time too. But I went by myself that time.

    Interesting documentary
What came to mind is that discipleship is very important too once someone comes to Christ and to not fall into the trap of sharing testimonies or ministering too soon after conversion. Also many folk suffer from a father's wound and are seeking the affirmation of the Father, but in all the wrong places... 🤔

You are so right no one should ever be turned away from church, let he who is without sin cast the first stone, we must have faith, Jesus has already overcome the world, have faith the faith we have as a child. We are instructed to love everyone even the wicked, bless those who curse us, Jesus with his Holy Spirit gives us a new heart that enables us to truly love everyone, he changes us one day at a time, helping us grow in mercy, mercy is key word here.

    • @wzeitner

Amen to that, Josee. We gotta love & bless others, and follow Jesus' example.
Which is also the perspective of almost all church leaders-the good ones.
The flip side of that coin however, as presented by several of those interviewed in the film, is that we are not instructed to put those who curse us in positions of authority in our churches. Scripture provides specific details on the requirements of deacons and elders/pastors.
That doesn't mean we don't LOVE those people, and pray for them.

    • @rebornasdavid
      @rebornasdavid 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You clearly don't know or understand scripture when you speak like this. We absolutely are to throw a brother (someone who knows better) out of the church when they are in sin. Now was Lonnie dealt with correctly? I can't say cause I wasn't there. But scripture for certain says to do exactly this. Come as you are, but don't stay as you are.
1 Cor 5:1,5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's wife. you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.
1 Cor 5:11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler-not even to eat with such a one.
1 Timothy 3:10 And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless.
It's not casting judgement on someone to throw them out of the church if they are knowingly in sin. Because when they repent we will welcome them back in with open arms. But until that prodigal son repents, they are not welcome.

As for the comments made towards the end by Pastor Chuck at his funeral while they may not have been completely inaccurate I do think they were insensitive and inappropriate at a funeral attended by his family, loved ones and closest friends,, I was aware of Lonnie's role in the Calvary Chapel movement but not in his involvement with John Wimber, which is interesting having been a Vineyard pastor for nearly 10 years, though in the UK. Anyhow thank you again for sharing this

In a 2nd book which is credited to Lonnie and ? he details how he went to Africa and Europe, etc. Mainly from 78-82 With great detail of being hooked up w/Vineyard when it was little and splintered some from Calvary. But it was John Wimber. I don't know about the UK Amazon but in the U.S. the middle-2nd book is free w/Kindle and amazing, filled with tons of Vineyard commissions.

I think Chuck Smith’s comments were the comments of a man who didn’t know Lonnie at all. His words were not God would say about Lonnie. Yes, Lonnie was a sinner, re repented and God would say, “Well done good and faithful servant”. No man has the right to judge another man or women! How many times have we heard a church leader judge others and find they have some private sin in their own life. It is easy for a man to look at another man or women and judge them.
We as Christians have lost our first LOVE we first knew when we got saved. It is the same Love that started the Jesus movement. It was that love and acceptance the hippies longed for and people are hurting and craving for now. We need many Lonnie’s more than ever to turn this broken world upside down.

wow, what an incredible story. I understand so much more now about this type of sin and God's grace and mercy, thanks to this documentary. I think his story should be played on the big screen. It will help so many people who are gay, as much as those who are straight. Homosexualism is a sin. Just like it is lying and cheating, and adultery, etc. Sin is sin. But my God! I'm so thankful to a God who sent His Son to pay for our sins and I'm sure Lonnie and the likes were in that plan. We should never judge people because of their lifestyle. Jesus took time to sit with the woman at the well, even though He knew her life and who she was. Jesus knew us way before we were a thought in his mind, and still, He loved us and gave His life for us. I'm not a homosexual, but I know a lot of them, and I've never for a second thought whether when I wasn't a christian, nor after becoming one, that it was okay for me to judge them. I was not a homosexual, but i had other type of sins in my life which God forgave me for. And I'm so thankful I know a God who's loving and forgiving and is full of mercy and compassion. Something that the church and many christians lack.

He might not have been perfect in life or in preaching (some of his teachings and things he did was very wrong), but he was simply human - all flaws included. However, I respect that he got new Christian's feet wet in bringing them to Christ, The Lord, and The Spirit. Even after Lonnie passed, everyone could then choose their own path to explore and get to know Christ's sacrifice for our sins, the righteousness of the Father, and better understand the mystery of the powerful working hands of the Holy Ghost. Excellent backgrounder for me! As a child of the '60s who had friends make the pilgrimage from Idaho to the Haight-Ashbury district... I'm sorry they did not encounter Jesus Christ as so many others did. Yet I had to wait until I was an arrogant college senior to give my life to Christ in 1971. Reflecting on this documentary, I'm wondering if this is not the background that caused Andy Stanley (son of Charles Stanley) to open his church to the LGBTQ+ movement in such an open manner?
Only God will finish Andy's story. I'm glad I watched this. God's Word is our ultimate Guide for life here for our own finishing well.

I need the music in this documentary . Ive never heard it and its lovely . For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God . But I think that if you are a preacher living in sin , as Hebrews 13:17 states you are held more accountable .

There is such a great need for us to pray, seek God and be willing to reach out to our children, teens, 20-30's, to everyone who is being swept up in the lies and empty hope of being something, someone else, being caught up in the gender confusion and self hate, even sadly, self loathing that is such a lie from the pit of hell, and young kids are being targeted, being used toward what really they don't know about, and this is ultimately, Transhumanism. We need to show the love of Jesus to everyone, especially those who need to know they are made in the image of God and dearly loved. Not one of us is without sin, and we need to pray and ask Jesus to send the Holy Spirit to help all of us be light in the dark, be able to be used, not by our ability, power or might, but by the spirit of God, to come over every city, every nation and may we be a part of seeing God break through all the lies, deception, fear, for God to reveal his love and mercy through us and to everyone who is being deceived! I am not a leader or know how to do anything, especially not what is so needed right now, but I know I don't have to be, we just need to believe in our Lord Jesus who is the way truth and life, and ask for Jesus to send a fresh pouring out of the Holy Spirit to open people's eyes and ears, to convict and reveal Jesus and his love and life he's given so that we all can be forgiven, saved and made new people! Please pray with me, and let's believe that just as Jesus promised, he once again will send the Holy Spirit to fill us and lead us, use us to reach people now, for lives to be saved and made new, and God be glorified! For all the in our face evil going on today, we who have been saved, need to realize that out prayers and seeking God, to receive the power of God, through the Holy Spirit is greater, more powerful than the evil we have happening around us. Thank you for reading this all, and if you choose to pray with me, thank you, I just know God has been laying these things on my heart, and all I know to do right now is pray and have a heart for God to fill with the HS, and be available for his glory. ❤

What a wonderful story. The Jesus I know would intentionally pick a person like Lonnie to work through. If you had or have rejected Lonnie in anyway, check in with your heart and ask, “does this align with God’s Love and Glory.” I wish peace to all 🙏

Really good documentary. My impression after seeing this film, is this:
God has no perfect people to use to share His gospel. And that makes me kind of happy. We can all be used by God - in truth.

Yes, I suspect it is unavailable elsewhere. But that's how it's listed in the credits at the end of this movie 54:24 and on the CD track listing on Amazon (track 5). "Gentle faith" is mentioned in the lyrics so I'm guessing it's correct; "Gentle Faith" by Gentle Faith.

How many of those saved during the Jesus Revolution in Southern Calif are still serving their Lord today? I got saved in the 70’s and was a deacon at Calvary Chapel Santa Barbara! The falling away of so many that went back to the world was heartbreaking. Sadly, CC pastors would never admit this happened!

Yes. Many of us fell away and ended up joining the conservative evangelical churches. When the JM ended, people looked around and didn't find anything, save those churches, and there was no where else to go.

Thank you for putting this up on this platform. Now I know my ,one question after watching all of the documentary is after he was removed from being a staff member , was he repentant to stop living the homosexual lifestyle? If he was he should not have been cast out! If he was not then Leadership / staff / board members have no choice but to do so .

What's missing from Lonnie's acid trip conversion is the reality that he was a sinner, repentance, and dedicating himself to Jesus. What I hear is God promises I will do great things.
