The imperfections definately add to realism on a project like this

Glad you did the black soot effect. Loots great. Ive walked through a few old train tunnels and shining your torch around inside. Its just pure black from decades of soot.

I think the correct term is patina. It seems to get used a lot on tv antique shows. It is where you get something that is old, and over the years it has worn away, got dirty, been cleaned, scratched, polished etc. Basically the stuff that makes it look interesting and individual, and not just an identical mass produced something-or-other. I find it horribly difficult to do in modelling, and this is a really good start. Makes it look so much more real.

Turned out great, looks nice and realistic, I really like the touch of black at the top of the tunnel entrance as well! :)

I think you did a great job, love how you made the tunnel look rustic and more old as if the track was a main line and used all the time.

Very nice work. I agree with what you say about keeping it rough....looks much more realistic. I really like the weathering powder smoke residue..that adds another level of realism. Looking forward to more of this project. All the best...Tom

Nature doesn't build in straight lines. The natural world is full of imperfections. I started model making when rogue trader came out back in the day. Stopped wargaming with the release of 6th edition. Changed my focus to n scale\gauge. Oddly i found doing scenery more challenging at first. Once I stopped over thinking it the easier it became. Love your show.

Realistic includes rough and ready - better to look real, than perfect. I find that leaving stuff out and undusted helps quite a bit too!

When i do this i do like you have done but also do a wash of olive/moss green over most of it then when that is dry do some vertical dry-brush lines to represent lime leaching out of the stone and some more solid small lines of white to show where the bird shit has splattered down the wall face.

I think what you are talking about is not necessarily flaws in the texture and highlight details but you are trying to create visual interest by implying that the materials have been worn or used. When something appears to be worn or used, it starts to tell a tale about what is happening visually in the scenery or figures, it does indeed bring things together as a whole.

Tried this and when I did the black wash...it turned all of my bricks grey. I had to completely redo it all since I had added a bunch of colors and dimensions to the bricks before I did the black wash. Any idea what I did wrong?!

Hey Luke! Would you follow the same process with different colours for a Hogwarts/Abbey brownish look? Would you use black wash or brownish?
