Advice from someone who has done 2 uni degrees: Do bring more glasses, crockery and cutlery, but dont put them all out in the kitchen. Keep some in your room because your stuff WILL go missing/get broken/get used by housemates and not washed. So it's good to have spares. Uni lecturers talk way too fast to take hand notes... use a laptop and remind them to upload their ppts on to the system so you have access to the information after the fact. Ear plugs are essential.
@@terilyte3152 for sure, it's usually a lot of content to get through as well so it's difficult to write it all down in a way that is legible. Plus you can type whilst still looking at the lecturer, so you dont miss stuff. Not as easy to do that whilst hand writing
@@terilyte3152 Depends on how the lecture is structured and how you take notes in general. If you have to take notes in math lectures - where you basically have to copy all the boards, at least at my uni, because there were no handouts our ppts - you will have to take them by hand, because formatting matrices or integral signs in LaTex or something just takes too much time. The same is true if you have to write down anything that is not just plain text - which happens a lot when you STEM subjects, I would say. So it would be useful to either invest in an IPad with ApplePen early on or to just take notes by hand. And if you type, please make sure your keyboard allows you to do so relatively silently, otherwise it gets quite annoying if lots of peoples keys are clicking all the time...
@@terilyte3152 yes!! if you comprehend it better writing then write it in a notebook when you get home, but typing becomes so much easier and faster over time
About the note situation...I preferred to handwrite my notes. They were usually sloppy and I would always rewrite my notes so I could decide what I needed to clarify for myself. That said, my method isn't for everyone so I say do what works for you. I have a bachelor's, master's, and doctorate....finished my doctorate last year. Never took digital notes.:)
what did you eat off? did you not use a plate? also, did you not have a folder for your paper? i bet they got really crumpled and hard to read! And it must have been SO annoying trying to carry it all around without a bag!! But, as long as you felt superior I guess
if you don't bring anything else...bring slippers. slides, flip-flops, fuzzy house slippers idc. you will not vacuum every day. you will not want to put on shoes to wander around the dorm building. ESPECIALLY if you have roommates, triple especially if even one of you has long hair. just. slippers.
hello ladies, gentlemen and esteemed enbies. i am currently on my way to uni, and as i sit in this ratty old train the realization strikes me that i have, indeed, left my slippers at home. i will be deleting all of my social media accounts and vacating the country asap. thank you.

Definitely the amount of stationery you need depends on your course. I did maths and I used loads of paper, because I had to take hand-written notes. Doing digital notes is not possible for maths!
I found that getting a lot of my homeware things secondhand was really helpful since you can find some of those long-lasting items pretty inexpensively if you aren't able to buy them new! Like most of my cooking stuff was honestly from a thrift store (I made sure to disinfect all of them SUPER thoroughly first of course!) and it saved me tons of money
Ruby, your buying advice is just like my mom's...She always tells me to buy something little pricier when buying multiple use items like winter coat towels bedsheets crockeries etc and my stuffs always last sooooo longer..not having to constantly buy same thing over and over again is such a relief..
I've never been this early .... Today it's Teachers' day in India . I feel that you're one of biggest inspiration who taught me that Studies can be enjoyable
Friendly reminder: If you are a lazy person, bring the least amount of dishes ,forks and cups (etc) as possible in your dorm.Or else they are going to end up like a huge pile in your sink. And noone likes that.
I have that same measuring glass! I used it more as a shot glass on college than for baking but now I live in my own house I find it useful for liquid measurements as well
Tbh I would say get more than two, maybe four or five. You use them really often, more than plates and cutlery and otherwise you'd have to do the dishes very often
I took 4 glasses to uni and only ever used 1 - depending on what you drink in them you can just rinse between uses (but obviously wash them properly as well regularly) I’d say if you’re a hot drink person, take one glass and multiple mugs, but if you’re a cold drink person take a few glasses and one mug. don’t be wasting your kitchen space it’s precious 😂
I have only 2, one for tea and one for coffee 😊 And if someone comes to visit me, I give him my coffee mug 😄 2 mugs are really everything I need 😁 (I drink water from my waterbottle)
My top kitchen tip - buy a roll of coloured electrical tape and tape the ends of your cutlery, your mugs, base of your plates etc. Then at the end of the year you know what’s yours to take home! Even better- assign a different colour to each flat mate especially if you all bought the same set of cutlery
Ruby i want to tell you something... I used to be very unproductive earlier but after watching your channel i have really improved. You are like an inspiration
Omg I always buy so much stationary and unnecessary extras which I NEVER END UP USING. Every year always think I am going to be so organised and motivated but it never lasts.
I actually bought an ironing board + iron during my second semester because I like to iron certain pieces of clothing and hate it when they're all wrinkly. But if you don't feel that way I'd agree with Ruby - especially when your room is rather small.
I bought most of my kitchen wear from Wilko and ikea and my towels from Asda. I personally find that items from those places last a long time if you look after them properly . For example , Asda towels, if you wash them properly will last between 5 - 10 years. I also think the reason a lot of people buy things cheaply is because when they have shared kitchens or are inexperienced in cooking it doesn’t matter if they mess up or if someone else damages their items. I found that my items last a long time because I looked after them and used them correctly . I also couldn’t afford to buy from more expensive places!
I’m starting uni a week today and I love candles and I also bought a set of 3 led candles for my room. My room is a studio like yours in first year and I’m so excited 💕
The drying rack you put on your radiator was extremely usefel when I was renting, with roommates, so I didn’t have to hang my socks and underwear with everyone else’s (they also tend to fall over when people are walking past)
To add to the tupperware, I really recommend oven safe glass tupperware. You can get it quite cheap in TK Maxx, and it means you can make like lasagnas and things in the oven, and use them as food storage in the fridge, AND use them in the microwave! It's also really hard wearing, and I use it to help transport little bits and pieces to university. ETA: Also Towels! I bought a really cheap set of 4 towels in the factory shop before 1st year, and they work fine but they're pretty thin and I think they're going to get holes in them fairly quickly. I'm going to use them as kitchen rags once that happens because they're not awful. However during the summer before 2nd year I bought some really nice flannels and 2 lovely plush towels from Dunnes while visiting my grandmother, and they're so plush, so absorbent, and so high quality, even though I didn't even spend that much more on them. The best thing someone can do for themselves if they can afford it is buy really nice towels, because they'll last ages and just add a nice bit of luxury to your day.
i completely agree with getting slightly more expensive stuff that you know will last if you can. You will probably save money in the long run when you look at how long they last. When it came to going to university I bought more expensive pots and pans which I hope to use well after uni too and I definitely do not regret it
Ruby it is so lovely to see you. Looking back, it is hard to believe you are now in your third year of university (even though second year of your course)! Where has the time gone??? I’m sooo with you on the lights and darks situation... I just shove all my washing in and hope for the best and nothing has gone wrong so far 😂 Honestly though Ruby this video is such a mood, I did one of these and the amount of RUBBISH I bought with me to uni was ridiculous 😭
I felt that I HAD TO thumb up/comment on this video when you were saying that if you can, buy something that can last you a little bit longer. In my first year of Uni, especially with exchange rates in mind, I felt guilty of spending more on things that I actually could afford to upgrade. Whilst some of the Target crockeries are very good, a lot of the very cheap finds proved to be of lower quality -- 'throw-away items as you'd call them. Also, good bed linens (either treat yourself really good ones on sale or buy nice cotton ones from Target) is a good investment, full stop.
I completely agree about the whole 'spend a little more and get better quality' sentiment (obviously if you aren't able to that's completely okay) but I am also here to say that IKEA towels SLAP. In my family we all got really nice, soft, bath towels from IKEA like 10 years ago and they're still going strong.
This video shows the difference between college students in England and college students in the United States. Because the best advice I was ever given before going away to college was from a friend who went the year before me. He said, “The most important thing I can tell you is that you should try to go four straight years without ever watching television. Because you should be so busy studying and going to enriching events on campus that you don’t have time to watch television.” But here in Ruby’s video, she didn’t even need to mention to not bring a television. It was a given. It’s sad to say that years later when one of my younger friends was getting ready to go off to college, not only was he taking a TV with him but he was taking a DVD player. I told him it was a big mistake. But he was probably going to a college that didn’t make very many demands on their students. I’m really hoping that my comment gets a heart this time.
As an Aussie, I'm that jealous of everyone else starting uni soon, e.g. UK and Russia. I still have to wait until Feb... :( I can't wait any longer! Btw, thanks for the vid. Definitely holding onto this.
Hey Ruby :) I was wondering if you could talk about growing out your fringe. I have had one for years and everytime I try to grow it out, it starts bothering me and I end up cutting it again.
I'm about to start my second year and I was extremely anxious when I started last year. However, I ended up surprising myself with how well I settled in, and I think that happens with most people. You'll have a great time! Good luck 😊
This was so useful I’ve just got some things for my 2nd year but after watching this I’m getting the ikea jar for my oats, exercise mat, shower cap, coasters and some door hooks as my hanger too didn’t fit through my door. 😁✌🏼

does anyone know when the pre-ordered academic planners will be dispatched?
I wish i could order one too
I think the pre-ordered ones are going to be dispatched on the third week of September (according to the pumpkin productivity Instagram page)
i’m going into first year and i’m ~scared~ lol so thank you for this ruby:))
good luck!! don't be scared, it's so much fun!! and so different than high school/(secondary school depending on where you are in the world haha)
I'm about to start my second year and I was extremely anxious when I started last year. However, I ended up surprising myself with how well I settled in, and I think that happens with most people. You'll have a great time! Good luck 😊
Natasha M yes it definitely does!! A blank canvas is scary but college is really fun
she looks so much wiser and prettier in just the span of a year
It would be two years :) she did one year of philosophy and theology and then switched to English literature where she's starting her second year now.
Oh my god Ruby's book 📚 shelf is over flowing 😉😁😁
I start university in a little more than a week so this really helped me!! thank you 💞

Reganation thank you so much!
Olivia Xenia of course!! 💞💞
This was so useful I’ve just got some things for my 2nd year but after watching this I’m getting the ikea jar for my oats, exercise mat, shower cap, coasters and some door hooks as my hanger too didn’t fit through my door. 😁✌🏼

I would like to wish you a very happy teacher's day.
