  • I've built up quite a collection of Moraknivs over the years, but which MORA should you choose?
    Here I review my collection of Mora Knives to help you decide which ones you need to add to your kit.
    PLEASE NOTE: I am not being paid by Morakniv to bring you this video, these are genuine knives from my kit.

    Not sure that red handled one is the Mora Robust. I think it's called something like the basic 511....
    The Robust has a black-ish and grey handle and the blade is thicker.
    Edit to add: BTW, I love your 'philosophy of bushcraft'. You're extremely mindful and I feel encouraged when I watch your videos.

      Exactly. Also, the full name of "Mora Black" is "Mora Bushcraft Black" and it comes with two blade lengths :).

    Well done Nick! You have a way of making things look easy and accessible. I’ve been recently noticing how just going through the motions of carving, and other simple bush craftings, open up that beautiful “head space” that you talk about. Thanks for all you do

    Thank you. I enjoyed that. Well explained without going into the nitty-gritty of bevel degrees and length of Scandi-grind etc. I also get in to that ‘headspace’ you mention. I really get absorbed in the piece of wood and the different holds cut or shave differently. It is a real tonic for my bouts of anxiety. Once I’m in the woods, I’m always late home again🤦🏻‍♂️. Thanks for producing the video. Paul.

    Good selection! I've been using a Companion for years in my work in nature and landscape (hedge) management. It is a fantastic tool to have on my belt all day, using and abusing it for all kinds of tasks. One of the ways it is a practical knife for me is the ability to take it out without having to take off my leather work gloves (working with thorny bushes and barbed wire). It is a stainless one, which means I don't have to maintain it as well, but a downside I find is that it is a bit harder to sharpen. In my free time the Black is one of my go to knives to take with me for crafting in the woods.
    Thank you for including the mental health aspects in your videos, it is so very important. Being in the outdoors and crafting are such good ways of dealing with it. My own struggles were the main reason behind changing my academic career for one in the outdoors working with my hands.

    • @JohnSmith-gs4lw
      @JohnSmith-gs4lw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also worth mentioning that the Black has a perfect 90 degree spine for scraping wood and, of course, ferro rods. I would be very surprised if you would get any sparks at all off any of those other blades; the spines are not sharp at all. Also, they offer the Black in that day glow orange as well. They don’t call it the Bushcraft Black, but it’s the same knife! I think it might be a stainless blade as opposed to the high carbon of the Black. Dimensionally identical knife though.

      The mental health aspect is paramount. Nothing like tuning in to the natural world on a daily basis to drain away the weird tension that comes with living inside modern industrial culture. Making spoons, or building campfires and brewing coffee in the wild does wonders for the spirit. Looking forward one of these days to building a Mors Kochansky supershelter.

    Hey Nick,
    Great run through, I’m always amazed with Mora . No faff no over pricing. I have added the orange stainless companion to my kit as I spend most of my time in a canoe, never rusts and I have not lost one yet😂 everything outdoors involves mindfulness and I totally get your ethos 👍👍

    The reason the companion is my favourite is that the knife actually clicks in place into the sheath and won’t fall out even if you hold it upside down and smack the sheath with your hand.

    • @scotty5717
      @scotty5717 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the knife gets a bit loose in sheath, just gently heat the top or the sheath with heat gun or even a hot hair dryer and push in.. Good as new. 👍

    good selection Nick, i bought a companion a few years back and cut the belt clip off, i made a leather sheath and shrunk the wetted leather around the plastic sheath, put a ferro rod and striker in outer straps and added the infamous bike inner tube rings, it works really well.

    Knives are great tools, and a bit of whittling goes a long way to calming the mind. I have several different knives in my collection but not yet got a Mora, my favourite is the 'Bushcraft' from Jack Pike, I've had it for years, it has an 8.5 inch full tang, 4 inch blade, 1/8 inch thick in 440 stainless, and has two finger cutaways for finer control, they are going for less than 20 squids, highly recommend them ✊😁

    Hi Nick, that was a nice feature, I like the mora range for their value and quality, you can have a range of knives for less than a fancy knife,
    I use a companion carbon (first choice) a companion stainless when around the coast and a comfort for food prep, the flexible blade makes it ideal for boning out, just remember they only have tab tangs so go easy when battoning.
    Great job mate 👍 👍 ☕

    Nice overview of the range and good tips on their use. I wished I had prepped a wedge when batoning with my Mora Black last week. It got stuck half way through a knotted pine log, but there was enough space to *carefully* use an axe to open up the split. In hindsight I should have used the axe to make a wedge.

    Like countless bushcraft enthusiasts before me, my first knife was a Mora Companion. It's a lovely little knife and great value for money. However the blade felt a touch too thin on certain heavier tasks and I was concerned I might break it. Owing to this I replaced it with a Mora Garberg. I bided my time and was able to pick one up in a sale.
    Man, what a knife. It feels totally rock solid and does everything I ask of it with ease. You can buy a branded bushcraft knife for £500 if you so desire, but I doubt there's a knife out there that performs any better than the Garberg.
    It seems, whatever the price bracket, Mora knives always come up trumps for performance, reliability and value.

      @nickthorp6361 £70 if I remember rightly.

    I have a hd companion for camping/bushcrafting/etc, blade is slightly wider than the standard companion (and carbon, nice sharp back for striking ferro rods), a hack I use is making a loop out of paracord that fits through the belt loop and crosses over the opposite side of the handle (so you see an X front facing) this will then stop the knife from falling out of the sheaf, especially useful when the sheaf stops holding the knife securely due to wear and tear, I think it would also work with the dingle dangler? I also use other moras and hultifors for work (mainly stainless), excellent cheap knifes, and if you do lose them or break them, you are not crying for weeks, and are cheap to replace, I do have the mora black (survival) knife on my shopping list though

  • @stellanstellan8708
    @stellanstellan8708 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Let me add Mora 2000 and Mora Eldris to the range. I´ve had the 2000 for 25 years I think and always come back to it no matter what other knives I have got. The Eldris is a large knife in a small package. If not batoning massive chunks of wood or filleting fish most of us would only use a small portion of the blade. The small handle fits most hands and the super sharp edge is perfect for any carving or normal cutting job, the small size means less to carry and fits in a front pocket. A sharp back is good for using with a ferro rod. Great give away.

    Great video as always! Some corrections though: None of these sheaths are Kydex. They are just plain old moulded plastic. Seemingly the same stuff they've used for the last 40 years or so. The knife you refer to as Mora Black is called Mora Bushcraft Black. Several models have a "Black" version. Which is basically a blued Carbon Steel version. There are 3 versions of the Bushcraft: Green, Stainless and Black and they all have different blades.
    The knife you call robust is actually not a Robust at all but plain Mora 511 craft knife.

    I own both a Companion heavy duty and a Kansbol.
    Even though the Kansbol is the supposed top range, I feel more confident in the Companion heavy duty.
    The added 3.2mm thickness in the spine make all the difference knowing it will handle everything you throw at it. Whereas I am sometimes a bit more cautious with the Kansbol, especially with the micro bevels. It cuts like butter, but is so razor thin I just couldn't confidently put the full muscle into it without fearing it might ruin the cutting edge.
    Maybe it 's the price factor, if the Companion heavy duty breaks, you can always replace it cheaply. But damaging the Kansbol would hurt the ego more! Hahaha.

    I use a mora classic no 2, completely wore out the blade via constant very hard use and resharpening, it took about about 3 years, wore it right into the core where the steel isnt as hard, but on the plus side it only costs £7 or £8 for a new blade blank so i kept the handle and just replaced the blade and made a spare knife with the old worn out one.
    Its a much less beefy model than the poly/plastic handles to be sure, but, its so much better for fine carving (from my experience), i dont need anything bigger because ive got a small axe for that stuff.

    Eldris👍👍 sheath fits horizontal in first loop of pants. Use the neck lanyard (cut to size) to attach to second belt loop (using larks head) twist the sheath to take up the slack and make sheath secure.
    A loop of paracord with a large stopper knot is fitted to knife handle and (when knife is in sheath) the looped stopper knot tucks under belt when buckled up, to retain it in sheath.
    Works brilliant🏆
    Highly underrated wee knife and is concealed at the midriff.
    Only downside to me is that my go to is for carbon. As far as I know Eldris is only avail in SS.
    Cranks a fire steel and sharpens easily.
    I carry a Swiss army champion in a leather belt pouch. It is near redundant but for the tools.
    SERIOUSLY reccommend👍👍

    I run the Mora Black, with the sharpening stone and ferro rod as part of the scabbard.
    I've bound a rubberized loop to the ferro rod, that wraps around the scabbard and keeps the blade from falling. (Wish I could show)
    Treat the blade with natural oil ,(olive, veg, butter) .

    • @BunkerDawes
      @BunkerDawes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @FukTheGender Agenda
      No, the rubberized loop was the lanyard from an old waterproof torch. The loop is about 9" (23cm) long and 4mm thick. One side runs behind the scabbard and the other between the knife handle and front of belt clip, it then wrap's back across the front with the end of the loop hooking onto the base of the Ferro rod/holder. Because the loop is rubber it holds tension on the handle and easily unhooks, with one hand, to draw the knife. Also, you could cut slivers of it to help start a fire.
      Sorry so long winded! 👍

    Honestly I am surprised you don't have a Mora Garberg which is their heavy duty full tang outdoor knife (in stainless or black dlc carbon steel). That one is crazy tough and can handle any survival task you can think of (and it is nice to have the metal tang on the end for jobs like crushing fibers, cracking nuts, & whatever). The Eldris "neck" knives are also fantastic for close in detail work in wood carving due to their short stubby blades.

      @@Butch_Deezlsteak for me it isn't too expensive since I own more expensive knives but it's cheap knives we are here talking about... It's just what many ppl from groups say. Also, DBK has proven that Condor Terrasaur is a better option. I had it too, but the quality was so poor that I have returned it to the retailer after few days.
      As for the $60 price point - I bought a Helle Didi Galgalu tang for $30, micarta plates for $10 and kydex sheet for $8 and made myself a custom, full tang knive with a lot more power and usability than a stock Garberg so yeah, there are some alternatives on the market. There are also vids on YT explaining why a Garberg is a good knive, but (now) pricey compared to other Moras, so it's not only my point of view.

    Interesting roundup, though I’m surprised that you didn’t mention the Kansbol (ss), which I think is the best bang for the buck. I also have the Companion (c) and the Eldris (ss) but find myself reaching for the Kansbol the most.

    Great video mate, really helpful.
    I’m in the market for my first knife and I’m going to go with the companion!
    Just a quick question - the companion obviously isn’t a legal knife so does everyone just have permission on private land when they use these type of knives or is it very common to just use them and be careful you don’t get caught? I’d imagine the later

    Hello nick , another very informative and interesting video but I've mentioned in a previous video that I've used the ontario SP10 marine raider bowie knife for years and for me it does everything that I need in the outdoors me personally I think morra knives are OK for starter knives but not much else (just my opinion) I did own a couple of morras but I donated them to a local scout group I would like ask if possible could you do a review on the SP10 just to see what you think enjoyable video as always thanks for sharing ♠️

    I generally rely on the Garberg/Black (the blades themselves are basically the same) for medium & heavier work but for light work & detail just a simple Swiss Army folder. I've never tried the 511, Companion or Comfort so this was a great segment to demo the practical usage ranges for each. Something for way down the line: Perhaps a similar bit on hook knives, or an alternative to using one?

  • @jinxjones5497
    @jinxjones5497 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    _that is a 511 basic in carbon. The robust is also carbon with a thicker, wider blade with a grey/black handle_
    You need a Morakniv (pronounced Moora ka neev) Garberg in carbon. They're a full tang with a 3.2mm thick 100mm long blade. It's actually got enough carbon to strike a piece of flint off the spine and produce usable sparks into char material and more suited to batoning

    The camp robins were in full force. Mora, quality! You can abuse the living daylights out of them... £15 you can't go wrong. I have a few scandi mora type knives just for the fact that they are bloody handy and useful. Being honest I have many knives of differing types, mainly Scandinavian but I most often use a petzel folder as my day to day pocket knife as UK law makes it a pain to carry a fixed blade.

    It seems that the Mora Pathfinder might be better for you than the Bushcraft Black, if you'll be batonning things that big. (Or perhaps the 140mm Terava Pukko for a non-Mora option.)

    Now what would you recommend carrying for sharpening or touching the knife up?

  • @Minsang1st
    @Minsang1st 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Correction: black knife is bushcraft black. There is also a stainless steel bushcraft knife (orange color). Red knife is newer 511 model, black and blue is older flex model. Flex model now seems discontinued and the closest resembling model is mora fishing comfort 3.5 in fillet knife. The clipper model knife you showed seems like a companion not a clipper (clipper had a differently textured handle). Mora sheaths are all plastic, not kydex, and as you mentioned often have retention issues.
    Appreciate the content, but if you’re doing a review of knife models, you should research them better and provide accurate info.

    I like your videos and you’ve always come across well.
    It would be worth checking some specs before filming as less than 1 min in you’ve mislabelled a mora (that’s not the robust) and got the sheath material wrong (it’s not kydex).
    If you want people to buy into what you say (which ultimately is the goal I’m assuming) then getting these bits wrong then draws question marks over other comments.
    I’m mean this as positive feedback & it’s easily fixed with a quick bit of pre recording research 👍

    I have looked on their site, but even they don’t have it.
    Any ideas on it?
    It’s stainless steel.
