Look no further! The Sony ICF-EX5MK2 is a DX Seeker. Seeking out new stations I have not yet been able to log before!
My example came from Japan at a cost of $141.00 shipped.
The internal ferrite antenna measures in at 7 3/4" to 200mm. This is on par with the GE Superadio's and C Crane's Dual Ferrite Rod system. Is it better? I have found it comes very close to equaling the sensitivity of my SR I, and is the same as my EP. The shining light is its Sync control switch. Amazing tech!
Features I like about this radio:
AM selectivity is the best I've used!
AM sensitivity is on par with the best I own.
Large internal Ferrite Antenna.
LED tuning indicator as the marker.
Upper and Lower side band sync control.
Tone switch.
Easy to manage size wise.
Features I wish it had:
Built in handle.
FM Stereo.
Cheaper price.
Usable Shortwave bands.
This radio is all about the medium wave and its ability to lock in on stations close to others. My EP has a new brother to contend with. I found a new station while filming this video...very cool indeed.
A cautious buy at this level...since you will not get a warranty. Its a Japan only radio and has to be imported. With that said every serious portable MWdxer should own one.

Love it. Cracks me up how even the in-between station noise sounds just like my ICF-SW7600GR, although this one seems much more sensitive.

The sync switch is not an automatic frequency control switch to counter drift. The sync setting is used to inject a synchronized carrier in at the AM radio station's carrier frequency to counter carrier fading that plagues AM reception. I have one on my Sony ICF-2010 and it works well. The Upper/Lower switch selects which side of the AM radio station carrier you wish to listen to, the upper sideband or the slower sideband.

Hi, after watching your video, I should take mine out for listening again ! This radio is very poplar among the MW DXer in Japan - this radio has huge ferrite bar antenna inside and we can put outside antenna in. The price you showed surprised me a lot - it was normally about ¥15000- i.e. about 150 dollers ... Maybe this product was no more built - discontinued model I think. No timer system to shut down... But quality of audio is super and sensitivity comes the same way. Tuning indicator tells the best point with red light. Thanks for up-loading. 73! Radio Nikkei is Japan's commercial shortwave radio network and its pronounced nee-kay. Radio Nikkei 1 broadcasts on 3.925, 6.055 and 9.595 MHz and Radio Nikkei 2 broadcasts on 3.945, 6.115 and 9.760 MHz.
I wonder how this compares to the C Crane CCRadio-2E Enhanced? So far that's my best MW radio. I actually prefer it over the coveted RF-2200.

This is superior to the old Panasonic RF 2200? Wow now that is saying something. The 2200 has been considered the king of AM reception for as long as it's been made the mid 70s! Incredible!
No no! To clarify, My experience is that for MW reception the Panasonic RF-2200 gets the gold, the CCrane CCRadio 2E Enhanced gets the silver and the bronze goes to the Sony ICF-EX5MK2.
Even though it Isn't as sensitive, I prefer the CCRadio 2E Enhanced because of the digital tuner and backlit display with clock. It's a better bed-side radio for me. The other factor is that you can't just order up a Panasonic RF-2200 so unless a person is willing to hunt around for one, pay a premium and possibly deal with costly repairs, it just isn't a radio I can recommend.
Yes for what i have heard this Sony is a great AM /DX machine some day i Will like to get my hands on one & probably this.is the main reason why still is in the. Market for so Long. I thing is super b for bed Night time Long distance listening what i do like is just moving the pointer step by. Step & Cruz. The band slowly yo established new contact of very weak signals now this receiver have been carried out at E/ BAY for less than 150D .for me is a little bit big for. Bed to turning it around therefore to be able to seperate the direction of. the different coming signals but at. any rate is a high quality piece of technology that as a whole even after all these years still can be usted .

Will the higher US 120 AC voltage work OK for Japanese radios like this that are built for Japan's 100 volts?
There is no direct AC in, so any 6VDC supply will work with a negative center. Not sure of how much mAH needed though, I would guess 500 should be enough. If the speaker distorts you probably need to increase the capacity of the power supply. Just kicked on the radio, and its soo good...man what a great piece of equipment.

Does Sony offer a dedicated 6V DC wall wart? Usually the small modern wall warts are "switching" units and they create a lot of interference and noise. You need what's called a "Class 2" or linear
adapter so you don't get the noise.

Holy smokes! You tuned in my second favourite station, CHML 900 from Hamilton, ON. They broadcast old radio dramas from 10pm to 1am nightly and I record/listen to all the shows. Hamilton is also home to my favourite station, CHAM 820 who broadcast comedy 24/7. Both are nearby and come in clear as day. Ditto for CFZM 740 (aka Zoomer).
I can also pickup New York and Chicago stations pretty well. As a MW enthusiast, I really lucked out living here.

I bought one today. I just couldn't help myself. I have to know how it compares with the CCradio 2E Enhanced. The winner will be my bedside radio (a highly coveted spot, I might add.)

I don't think you'll regret it. It is an incredible MW receiver. A battle royale against the ICF-EX5MK2 and RF-2200 would make for a heck of a dramatic showdown.
For audio quality the CC 2E is going to be the best. Still looking for a clean, working example of a 2200.

Yes, quite a few. Expensive to export and some don't have 10kHz tuning. mostly digital headset type radios.
When you buy a Sony it’s like buying a work of art. Everything is crafted beautifully and the designers have thought of quirky yet useful methods of improving performance. I’ve got two and won’t part with them now.
I love my Sonys. From vintage to new, always the fanboy.

I really love mine. I've been DX'ing since the late 60's and have had a dozens receivers starting with a Realistic DX-160. The EX5MK2 is top shelf due to the amazing sync. I'm still amazed how a single conversion radio can be this selective. I wish it had a dial light though.
I think it's overpriced but it is Sony quality. I have a 35 year old Sony ICF-6500W which still works as good as when it was new. If you want a technical review, check out radiojayallen dot com.
I've read that article and saw his breakdown. He had a loose speaker..that would freak me out.

Mine is slightly above average. Average is 48 stations on an analog radio. This one gets into the 50s, I just like the audio on the MW band more than FM, not enough fidelity with the onboard speaker.

this is the cheapest crap radio from sony i believe this radio is build from other company and use the name of sony because the sound is like 20 dollars walgreens bell and howell radio , i have the old ICF 2001. and no synchronous detection and sound better for the classic mile , but thanks so much for you review
