  • The Sony ICF-S5 Classic AM FM NSB Portable Radio is All Business when it comes to Sensitivity, and Superb Audio. The Imported S5 has a Linear Scale, and a Rotating Dial for setting Different Log Scales depending on where you live in Japan. FM is Excellent, but I could only test the top portion. NSB is an option as well, giving the user six different crystal controlled shortwave frequencies that they can tune in. The LED Tuning Indicator, along with its size, make this one of my favorites.

    Features I like about the Sony S5:
    Excellent MW Sensitivity, and Selectivity.
    Tone Control.
    Simple, and Easy to Use Controls.
    Smooth Analog Tuning Across the Entire Dial.
    LED Tuning Indicators on the Dial.
    Rotating MW Log Scale.
    Speaker Audio is Pleasant.
    Compact Size.
    LED Band Indicator.
    Made in Japan.
    Overall, the S5 reminds me of the GE Superadio, just on a smaller scale. These cost more, but if your a fan of the Medium Wave band, and of a pure analog tuning experience, this is one to consider.

    I had one for several years, put it on eBay and it sold within 15 minutes. I guess I didn’t ask enough for it.

    Just purchased the Sony ICF-S5. It's new in the box the strap and ear plug are still in plastic. The instructions and warranty card are in original plastic cover. Going to get batteries and see how it sounds. I like your reviews you are my go to guy for information on my purchases. Thanks ... Do you still sell the T-Shirts???

    Hey Todd? Can you hear EAS alerts on the AIR band, Shortwave band, and the Single Side Band?

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possible on Air band depending on your location. NOAA is the best for alerts. with SSB you will hear HAM Emergency Nets, normally with Hurricanes. There are also Emergency Nets on VHF.

    Hi Todderbert: glad to see you finally got around to reviewing thus radio. Guess what: I finally found 2 Tecsun dr-777 from Japan!! If course in Asia they were sold under a different name. Unfortunately the manual is in Japanese. Any chance you could send me a copy if your manual if you still have my email?
    I’d be really grateful.
    Best,
    Joe in Connecticut

    Very cool and different. The ICF-S5W has 88-108 FM and 10 US AM/MW zones, I think I'll pick one up to compliment my ICF-EX5MK2. Thanks Todd!

    There used to be a time when it was cool to have vertical slider controls for the volume and tone. My dad used to have an ICF-SW2001 portable back in 1981 and it had slider controls in front. They looked very futuristic in those days but it was a fiddly affair to finely increase or decrease the volume level.

      StratMan II
      Indeed, the early-mid 80s was a time when it seemed like all the major mfrs were going with the slider controls, which also had the problem of being more prone to getting more dust and corrosion on the slider pots compared to knob style. I believe the reason they chose this was because it was very common in the professional industry, such as sound boards, ect...even today they still use mechanical sliders to give the creative and production crew better ability to control sounds.

    • @StratmanII
      @StratmanII 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@watershed44 Yes, you're absolutely right about mixing consoles having more slider pots than rotary knobs, I forgot about them! I suppose for studio mixing desks vertical sliders made more sense as they represented a graphical interface and were easier to browse across the controls.
      For consumer level appliances like this radio the most obvious issues are their being prone to dust intrusion as well as taking up valuable space.
      That said, by the 1990s the use of sliders in radios and boom boxes waned in favor of rotary volume knobs and sliders were mainly used for graphic EQ controls. Later on with sophisticated fluorescent and LCD displays even graphic EQs were push button designs with the discrete frequencies being represented as little graphs on the displays.
      Sony abandoned the use of vertical slider pots by the mid 90s and their shortwave radios reverted to traditional knobs or thumb wheels.

      @@StratmanII Good reply friend. I used to work in a broadcast TV station back in the 90s and sure enough the studio mixers and sound boards all had extensive use of slider pots, so that the audio guys could easily see settings and return to them over and over again during various productions like newscasts, ect...

      @@watershed44 Nice to have met you in this comments section, sir. I don't think I've known anyone in real life or online who has a background career in broadcasting before. SWL'ing is my earliest hobby as a kid in the 70s as the only appliance I was allowed to explore was the vintage Sanyo Transworld multi-band radio in my parents' bedroom, which was later placed in the living room. 😁📻 It's an on and off pastime which I slowly neglected when I started working.
      The pandemic lockdown in Malaysia made me think of a hobby that I could enjoy during at home and my other pastime (dSLR photography) is no fun when I can't travel during these difficult times. My old Sony ICF-SW7600G doesn't function anymore and I started buying SW receivers online.. Maybe I'll have a tidy collection of Tecsun radios by the end of next year! 😀

      @@StratmanII Nice to speak to you as well.
      I too got interested in radio incl SW, amateur, and CB, back in the mid 70s as a child. Loved my first Radio Shack Archer Space Patrol walkie talkies with the morse code bar on them back in 1973, where I first talked to truckers on CH14...lol Got my first multiband portable JCPenney 8 band SW (it was bigger than a Zenith Transoceanic! in 1974, and it even had a BFO back then something not common on inexpensive (just 64$ !) portable multiband portables back then,(I still don't know who actually made it for JCP) Later on got interested in the engineering side of broadcast TV (actually was always more interested in that than the production side) technical stuff was always more interesting to me as opposed to programming and production, but eventually got a job in the 42nd biggest TV market in the USA at a network affiliate....
      Hope you don't think I am showing off, just figured you would be curious.
