You can make it smooth by doubling or tripling the gum stay at the point where you want to add bias to. It makes it more firmer at that point. I normally cut one inch wide cloth stay three times and add to the wrong side of the exact place I want the bias, then I use the bias in front, comes out smooth

I used the hard one but it made my velvet so hard and it didn't sit well on my client's body, what should I do?
For light and softer fabrics, try to stick to tissue stay..its less rigid..sorry about that though
