F8, this is the best lens for everything. No other company has such a great lens for this price with this low light performance. Thank you Fuji for this great lens…
I'm waiting to see a comparison between this and the Sony 200-600. I think the only benefit of this Fuji lens is that it's lighter, but will wait for the comparisons videos before deciiding to ditch Fuji. Moving to the Canon R7 + 100-500 lens is tempting, but that Canon lens is so expensive!
A comparison would not be fair. The Sony is a full frame, on a crop sensor the Fujifilm lens actually offers a 900mm field of view. Sadly, all good lenses are expensive.
@@MaartenHeilbron I think a comparison between the Fuji lens and the Sigma 150-600 + Fringer adapter would be fair, especially as the Sigma is roughly half the price.
I was so happy to see a review from you on this lens Maarten. Was worried I would only find the usual suspects with nothing but good things to say. Looks like a great lens, but high iso noise in low light on the X-H2s was my primary concern, which you confirmed here. Lack of parafocal was the final blow for me personally. I wanted to want this lens, but have to be honest with myself. If I could afford it the 200mm F2 would be more in my lane.. Still considering X-H2s, but need the right lens for it. Coming from Z6 with 200-400 F4, it is hard to see the path...
Just got back from the Porcupine Mountains in the UP, since I am heavily invested in Fuji, will have to decide to sell my 100-400 with the 1.4 teleconverter giving me 840mm, or buy this new lens, which I like that the Zoom is internal and gives 900mm without a teleconverter. I will wait until this fall when Fuji's 40 megapixel camera comes out and next year after seeing extensive BIF birds in flight testing to buy the New Fuji Camera or jump ship to the Sony A1 or Nikon Z9...Thanks for another Great Video

Nice review) thank you. Do you know what some audio beeps during video were caused by? And it's quite nice to see your attention to indigenous people of the North) as a person from one of arctic tribes, I like it)
Thanks for your kind words. I do know what caused that. I'm using the Zoom F2 external recorder (so it's not an effect introduced by a camera) and even with 32 bit float (and no ability to set the level) an occasional gust of wind over-drives the processor. Next time - a better wind sock or mic inside the shirt.
Thanks for the nice video. I was wondering what your thoughts are concerning the aperture of the new lens at 400mm being F7.2 vs the F5.6 on the 100-400mm. That's something where I'm wondering if it's not best to hold onto my 100-400. Then again I love sharpness and I'm hoping the new lens is overall sharper, especially at the long end? It's also a bit longer but I do own both teleconverters so it's not that big of a difference again, except for hopefully sharper images as teleconverters aren't ideal? Best regards from Bangkok
Now that’s a focal length in my wheelhouse and kudos to Fujifilm for producing it because, as you say, that focal length in the APS-C arena is a rarity. Terrific introduction to the lens and, again, kudos to Fujifilm for making it “affordable”. Not wanting to sound petulant, I do wonder to whom Fujifilm is targeting this lens as it seems the bulk of sports/action/wildlife photographers (for whom this would be standard arsenal) are shooting “Canikony”. Then again, paired with that XH2s, it may just be a killer combo for the video/stills shooter. Props to your daughter too on the paddling coz it looked like you were moving at a pace based on the rippling of…the Humber?
I think that there are likely some nascent sports/wildlife photographers among Fujifilm fans. And who knows if this is the push some need to consider this brand. The buzz of the lens is either iOS and/or the linear motor magnetic rail focusing system… the linear rails are very noticeable in the smaller 50-140, which btw is regarded as fujis best XF-zoom lens
Am not sure the pricing is great especially if you are not already into the Fuji ecosystem. R7 from Canon and A74 from Sony are more compelling, with Sigma and Tamron lenses for the Sony being amazing value for money!
I would actually say that this lens is a deal breaker for me to move to Fuji, f8 at 600mm really Fuji. And more expensive than the FF Sony or Sigma offerings. What a shame. The only people that will be happy with this are those that haven’t tried the competition.

After my comment on the other vlog (About the H2-s,) I found this review about the lens. I find it interesting, I am used to Tamron- Sigma long lenses. Yet they have one less stop at the end of the range (600mm) How odd that the lens doesn't have a stabilization button? Is it always ON ? Despite the fact that I was waiting for a lens with one less stop, thanks to the cameras being able to take isos up, I don't think that will be too hard for us birders. Birds are mostly shot during the early morning or late afternoon. Thank you very much! I will await your final comments about both lens and camera when they are released into the market! Best from distant Uruguay.
Sorry to say, sir, there are at least two situations of long-lens use where turning the lens stabilization off is crucial, and both of those situations are quite common in birding/wildlife situations. 1stly, when set on a tripod stabilization needs to be turned off, otherwise it fights the natural stability from the tripod and often resulted in blurry photos. Now, if I presume this lens detects the tripod automatically (like the 16-80), 2nd question arises regarding panning. Lenses like these from other brands mostly have a panning mode in stabilization switch, that turns the horizontal axis off for a smooth panning shot. Now again, I suspect if XH2S does that in body or not, but I certainly know that many fuji bodies can't do that. So making a stabilization button on the lens does make sense, for a lens of this category.
@@PhotographerSen The stabilization (and I'm well aware what a disaster it is on a tripod) can be turned off in camera - I assume that leaves some optical system in place, but I didn't detect any issues. Panning is also accounted for (Fujifilm has been held to task for this issue) in the settings. An advanced non-panning mode is available. Hope this clarifies.
Like always very informative! This lens is a clone of the XF100-400 with teleconverter. I wonder how they behave side by side zoom range by range (aperture wise). Could you do a comparison between the XF100-400 with the 1.4 teleconverter and the 150-600 without teleconverter? 🙏🙏🙏 Oh please, please, please!!!! 🙇🏻♂️
Hi Marteen, great review. I would like to see how the xf150-600mm perform on a X-T4. Most of the peoples on youtube show the performance on the new camera XH2S... but is it the same performance on a X-T4 ? Thanks.
At the moment, the X-T4 is slightly less stable, and focus is a little slower. They’ve promised a firmware update which will likely address those issues.
This lens arrived yesterday and so far so good. I've attached it to an X-Pro 3 with a 1.4 converter. However I am unable to use the Focus Preset function. I think it is because I am using it on an X-Pro 3 which is not subject to a Firmware update that allows use of the preset function. I don't think it will be a huge problem for me because the automatic focus seems to be pretty fast. I'd be glad to receive confirmation/advice on this.
Right, noted in the description. The wind was overloading the Zoom F2 - which, with 32 bit float (and no level adjustment) shouldn't happen. Am looking for solutions, so open to suggestions.
I use the 100-400 + 1.4 extender (= also F8) for years. Dear Fuji; why should I buy the new 150-600 for only a couple of mm's more and and with the same aperture of F8 ? For months I hoped they announced a 150-600mm with aperture F6.3 like most other brands. I'm a little bit dissapointed. 🙁
Would appreciate your opinion if it worth upgrading from xf 100-400 for birds photography. Will it be a better quality sharper image in your opinion? Thanks
just curious do you guys think this lens can be creative for landscape or cityscape images that include elements in the background like the moon or a plane, I think the compression made in this focal length is very hard but creative and you don't see that many photos using these lenses
That is an interesting idea, howeverI think it would be very difficult to find a suitable position to do this in most urban situations. Even at the widest end (225mm equivalent) it's not easy to get landscapes or cityscapes.
Thanks for the review, Maarten. I won't be buying it, but thanks anyway. I have a question and a comment: You say the full frame equivalent zoom range is 229-914 mm? Unless the focal range is really longer than specified, then this amounts to a crop factor of approximately 1.524? Are these "odd" numbers listed by Fuji, or did you figure them out based on observations? I'm not surprised you had little success at 600 mm in the canoe! You might have mentioned it in the video to warn potential buyers.
Thanks, always appreciate your comments. Yes, those focal length numbers are provided by Fujifilm - so I guess, not quite 1.5. I'm sorry, that observation came only after I'd recorded the video and was looking at the images (and screen recordings) at home. Hopefully viewers do read the description.
Yes, I was using black tape, becuase at the point that I was recording this video, neither camera or lens had been announced, so I was doing my best to be discreet.
I think it is still better to go with Tamron 150-600 g2 with adapter, given the wider aperture and lower price of the Tamron, unless Fuji released a wider aperture one.
Very helpful review ... as always. I'm unsure whether to upgrade from my XF100-400 + 1.4 teleconverter. That extra reach is tempting. We are suffering terrible Inflation here in the UK so it seems a little pointless having any money sitting in the Bank.
Looks like trying to copy the Olympus 150-400 (300-800mm) but smaller zoom range, without the built-in 1.25x teleconverter and much slower than the constant 4.5 of the Olympus.
Loved the review but I'm curious: how does the lens perform on the X-t4? is the stabilization/focus still acceptable is it likely that we're going to get a autofocus software update for the X-t4 soon? I'm not a video shooter and the xh5 (XH2s X'D ) doesn't really interest me
Fuji has said that the xt4 will need a firmware update to work well with this lens. One is coming but fyi and test combining the today at present won't be representative of the finished product.
It is in the description: I receive a small commission if you purchase: Cotton Carrier Holster - use this affiliate link for a 10% discount: www.cottoncarrier.com/discoun...
It is to me. I still don't understand why Fuji standard lenses exhibit this behaviour - the wobbly sudden loss of focus while zooming - when the competition does not. Suppose I wanted to use this lens for video at a motorsports event. There's going to be a lot of zooming in and out during recording. I wonder if the new X-H2S solves or at least mitigates this behaviour or if it's a "chronic" video issue with Fujifilm. So far the only Fuji lens that does well in video is the new powerzoom and parfocal 18-120mm...
I didn’t feel that we were taking any chances - canoes are pretty stable in the right hands, and we’re on a pretty gentle river. Also, not rich - the equipment demonstrated is on loan (and insured).
@@MaartenHeilbron u have to be closer to subject and have more distance from background than when using a lower f stop number. that gives u less chances to take nice wildlife shots with blurred bg. i have the nikon d500 with 200-500mm f5.6 (almost ½ the price) and have been waiting for fuji to release a telephoto lense to switch to the xt4 but this one wont do it for me.

Could you do a comparison between the XF100-400 with the 1.4 teleconverter and the 150-600 without teleconverter? 🙏🙏🙏 Oh please, please, please!!!! 🙇🏻♂️
Right. Let me see if Fujifilm will support your request.
Thanks for sharing this helpful note.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you Maarten for the update, this lens will be my next one :-)
Hey, Maarten! What a long lens!
This sounds like a line from the wolf to little red riding hood. The reply would be "All the better to see you with my dear."
Great question, but unfortunately I don't have an X-Pro3 to check it out. Let me reach out to my friends at Fujifilm Canada.
My Fujifilm contact says that there is an update coming for this issue, but no timeline has been provided yet.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks Maarten. I really appreciate your help.
Lots of audio beeps and chirps at around 3 minutes in.
Right, noted in the description. The wind was overloading the Zoom F2 - which, with 32 bit float (and no level adjustment) shouldn't happen. Am looking for solutions, so open to suggestions.
Appreciate you. ✌🏻
Thanks for your kind words, appreciated.
Rhetorical question?
This was cool
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words.
Hi, thanks for video, is it compatible with fuji xt2 camera?
It is compatible with all x-mount bodies, including the X-T2
@@MaartenHeilbron thanks!
Отличный объектив, но останусь пока со своим 70-300 с 1,4 телеконвертером, меньший вес и отличное макро для меня важнее. Спасибо за видео!
Я ценю твои добрые слова.
Would appreciate your opinion if it worth upgrading from xf 100-400 for birds photography. Will it be a better quality sharper image in your opinion? Thanks
Well, mostly upgrade for the longer reach. I didn't get a chance to compare image quality side by side this week.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you
Maarten in the wild!
I'm frequently in the wild.
just curious do you guys think this lens can be creative for landscape or cityscape images that include elements in the background like the moon or a plane, I think the compression made in this focal length is very hard but creative and you don't see that many photos using these lenses
That is an interesting idea, howeverI think it would be very difficult to find a suitable position to do this in most urban situations. Even at the widest end (225mm equivalent) it's not easy to get landscapes or cityscapes.
Isn't 2k too much for such a small aperture lens? It will be 2250€ for sure in europe
I thought this was fairly reasonable, and in practice the aperture didn’t seem much of a limitation.
Thanks for the review, Maarten. I won't be buying it, but thanks anyway.
I have a question and a comment:
You say the full frame equivalent zoom range is 229-914 mm?
Have you used the 100-400? Do you have thoughts about this lens compared to that one?
I have not.
Excellent review but even greater because of the homage you pay to the original people of the land.
I appreciate your kind words, thanks!!
Thanks for the review. How does that lens compare to Fuji's other big lens, the 100-400?
Not sure, never tried the 100-400.
sorry but why is he hiding Fujifilm logo thats on the front of the camera?
i really like that! was he using a black tape?
Yes, I was using black tape, becuase at the point that I was recording this video, neither camera or lens had been announced, so I was doing my best to be discreet.
This dude rocks
This dude also appreciates your kind words.
love your voice!!
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words.
I think it is still better to go with Tamron 150-600 g2 with adapter, given the wider aperture and lower price of the Tamron, unless Fuji released a wider aperture one.
If you're happy with that solution (I haven't seen that lens) that makes sense.
This looks leagues sharper than the g2. Plus internal zoom.
Very helpful review ... as always.
I'm unsure whether to upgrade from my XF100-400 + 1.4 teleconverter. That extra reach is tempting.
We are suffering terrible Inflation here in the UK so it seems a little pointless having any money sitting in the Bank.
I love the rationale! It never occurred to me to use that as a justification for a new lens/camera purchase. Thanks!!
@@MaartenHeilbron Please go ahead and use that rationale yourself. I've spent a lifetime creating good excuses to buy stuff! 🙂
@@Smarty3853 Sounds like a good topic for a video!
If you sell the lens, keep the teleconverter... imagine that reach
@@tjkrueger2655 right, mind-boggling!
Still not available. Come on Fuji - it's July and I'm eager to get shooting with this. Don't leave me hanging 😁
Clearly disappointing, but I'm certain they'd love to make a sale and get one in your hands as soon as possible.
How are the quality compared to 100 to 400?
I have no experience with the 100-400 to provide you an authoritative answer.
Looks like trying to copy the Olympus 150-400 (300-800mm) but smaller zoom range, without the built-in 1.25x teleconverter and much slower than the constant 4.5 of the Olympus.
In fact, the zoom range is 900mm, and with Fujifilm's teleconverters, it can reach to 1.4 and 2x.
Loved the review but I'm curious: how does the lens perform on the X-t4? is the stabilization/focus still acceptable is it likely that we're going to get a autofocus software update for the X-t4 soon? I'm not a video shooter and the xh5 (XH2s X'D ) doesn't really interest me
hehe, I didn't have an X-T4 to try that.
update on this - my friend Sonam came over last night with his X-T4. The stabilization is just slightly less, the focus is noticeable slower.
Fuji has said that the xt4 will need a firmware update to work well with this lens. One is coming but fyi and test combining the today at present won't be representative of the finished product.
@@TheRacerRich We'll see.
@@TheRacerRich I doubt a software update is going to make a two year old camera focus as fast as a new camera.
Object isolation with f8?
I doubt that this works....
Did you look at the samples? It absolutely does. When it arrives, go to your dealer and check it out.
please make me know, what is the camera mount on your chest? thank you!
It is in the description:

$2000 for F8 is insane .
While I appreciate that your slightly hyperbolic comment is valid for you, I’m sure that there are many who will find this lens valuable.
$2000 for this kind of reach and sharpness is insane
Crazy is as crazy does.
I don’t,now why you’d even touch on parfocality of a 150-600… it makes little sense
Maybe because it’s of interest to some, even if not you.
It is an artifact of the lens, not the camera. I find the XF16-55 to be usable, even if it's not strictly speaking parfocal.
How much this lens cost

this lens work with X T1 anyone try ????
All X-mount lenses work with all X-mount cameras. However, I do not have an X-T1 to confirm.
Crazy taking expensive equipment in a canoe. But on the other hand if Maarten is rich who cares, right?
I didn’t feel that we were taking any chances - canoes are pretty stable in the right hands, and we’re on a pretty gentle river. Also, not rich - the equipment demonstrated is on loan (and insured).
too expensive for an f8 lens in my opinion
Valid, but as the quality of high ISO images continues to increase, smaller apertures are more livable.
@@MaartenHeilbron yeah, but what about bokeh.
@@sergiollag1 From the images I've taken so far, it's quite impressive - at that focal length it's actually much easier to defocus the background.
@@sergiollag1 I encourage you to have a look at the images I posted on flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/maartech/albums/72177720299406356 and check the EXIF data for focal length and aperture while admiring the bokeh to see for yourself.
Imo the lens is too expensive for only offering F8.
In the days when higher ISOs offer greater flexibility, it's not such a burden. Also, excellent stabilization.
@@MaartenHeilbron F8 means less DoF and i have no information yet than the X-H2s 5th Generation Sensor is better at High ISO than the X-T4.
@@muttishelfer9122 Not when the focal length is the equivalent of 900mm. Please check out the EXIF data (which includes length and aperture) on the images I posted on flickr - I'm sure you'll see that F8 isn't an obstacle to a very blurred background and a lovely bokeh.
@@MaartenHeilbron Still thinking other APS-C Set Ups like A6600+ Sigma 150-600 5-6,3 DG DN or Sony 200-600 5-6,3 (--> also 900mm equivalent) are faster and cheaper than this Fuji offering. Sorry, but i see no benefit on the Fuji why i sould buy this lens (+ pay more than at other manufactureres). The only single point is weight, but dont care much about 300 Gramm less on an supertele lenses.
@@muttishelfer9122 Understood.
The fashion of thanking the first nations is comical and cringe worthy. Our company HR team started doing it. Makes me die on the inside.
If you would care to take a few minutes to understand how their land was stolen, and promises made in treaties were honoured only on the indigenous side, you are right to die on the inside. The behaviour of colonists and settlers has been shameful.
@@MaartenHeilbron I fully understand Maarten and I fully understand how little these acts are worth about as much as we pay for them. Land won't be returned and years of injustices undone with a few hashtags and token words.

disappointing lens, non of the photo presented here are sharp.
Maybe you need to upgrade your internet data plan - TH-cam will reduce quality when the bandwidth is low. When viewed on a 4K display with sufficient bandwidth, I'm sure you'll see they are sharp.
@@MaartenHeilbron I change the setting to 4K, indeed pic is sharp now :)
This is such a dumb lens. What was Fuji thinking?
That Fujifilm photographers might appreciate a nice long lens (900mm equivalent) that's relatively small, light and affordable.
I think it’s great. I have the 100-400 and considering this lens provided it give good detail and saturation.
Why is it dumb btw?
