The Raspberry Pi has such a huge boost in value just because of the community support available. For someone like me whose not an expert, it's necessary!
I've been reading up on these 3 boards for the past couple of days, but I much prefer to watch comparisons over reading them, so thank you! You've made my day :)
thanks, great video. Got myself an Orange Pi ONE and im super happy with it. due to the very low price im not afraid to solder and experiment around with it, since if i break it, a new one costs less then trip to a KFC.
Take a look at how far the orange pi has come... I think you should do another video with the new "orange pi 2" or the mini version against the raspberry pi.
GreatScott. You saved me from making a terrible purchasing mistake. I decided to go with the raspberry pi instead. Thank you for your video! There are aspects of the Orange Pi I would love to have - like recharging my lithium battery - but the risks are too great. A good circuit board SHOULD look clean. Sloppy looking often correlates with USB ports not working etc. etc. I hope Orange Pi ups their game. They could be a great competitor to RaspPi and BPi
I've been following you on TH-cam for a long amount of time and got fascinated by the awesome projects you present on each video . I want to ask you on how did you gather all this knowledge on Electronics and programming since you're still this young ??? what is your advice on that to get me going on in the same path ??
Definitely i would buy (and i will at some point) the Raspberry Pi. Don't forget the noble cause for which the Pi was initially designed. All the other competitors are just aiming for profit.
If they are all open source then there is no difference. Also i dont mind we exist as a market for microelectronics, we being the majority of the worlds population, the 3d world. The ppl who used to buy the spectrum 48k, though now the strawberry if made in the uk, has a cost measured in pounds which measure more than euros>dollars>>> pesos.
I have the Raspberry Pi B+ and I have to say that I am very impressed with its performance despite what I read about it that it is very slow, It is actually quite fast for such a compact little machine.
Cara... Salgadérrimo o preço de 750 conto. No ML mesmo tem de 260 conto. Mesmo levando em conta os "Extras" que vem. Mas de qualquer jeito o trequinho é bom pra relembrar os tempos nostalgicos.. muito bom.
It was quite usefull! We sell orange pi pc on our store and there's no much info about the board. Thank you for the excelent video! Cheers from Brazil, mate!
BPro is looking amazing for a server with it's dedicated Ethernet and SATA port, I really like Orange's onboard VGA and battery circuit, and the RasPi has the best graphics solution (if you're a coder) and software support IMO. For desktop use I'd right now recommend Odroid XU4! It's under $80, has 2GHz quad core Cortex-A15 processor with four more LITTLE cores making it effectively an octa-core machine, and the Mali T6 GPU is way better than what you usually find on these kinds of devices.
Hey Scott, thank you for your videos! I especially like the Ambilight vids. How about a introduction to capacitors and its use in combination with the Pi? Never really understood how I am supposed to use them.
I have my Pi2 arriving today, but after I finish my intended goal with it, I plan to get the ODROID-C1. I don't have bench power supplies and fancy measurement tools, but I'm curious to see how well the two compare, considering their price tags are close and the C1 appeared before Pi2 (not bashing, but the Pi2, which wasn't supposed to be released until 2017, suddenly appearing when C1 jumps out of the gate with an agreement with Microsoft and Windows 10? Totally not related).
Hey have you seen the New Orange Pi plus? with a Quadcore H3 SOC, 8Gb eMMC, SATA, Onboard WIFI, 40 PIN GPIO, 4 USB 2.0 Port and 4K video... ? its a huge improvement and takes the best featues of them all combined into one board.
I have worked heavily with the Banana PI/Pro and while it is well made, it has some serious issues. Copywrite issues to boot, and then theres the fact that the AXP209 is not properly configured both in software and hardware. The board does not completely shut down power, and the chargine features are useless. I have worked heavily with the I2C bus that the AXP209 is on and there is no fix, it is a design/hardware issue. However, lemaker makes some great products and I still would reccomend their product for most uses that aren't power sensitive(such as battery powered wireless devices)
Hi, I'm a fan of RPI especially because of its size, but to be fair you need to compare it to orange pi plus (1.6 Ghz quad-core) which is more efficient but also bigger.
Love your videos very good with lots of info so I want to make a video player using XBMC to play my videos and other films from the internet on TV but the Pi is slow so how about a video showing the best home entertainment system that would be interesting using the best from this review. Thanks Bob
One thing I wish all these SBC manufacturers paid more attention to is the IO connector layout. It's pretty awkward to have cables sticking out from every edge, especially when there's internal and external connectors side by side. I have a BananaPro and for my project (a car computer) it's pretty much perfect, but the IO layout doesn't make me want to design a compact device with it.
I would buy the raspberry pie because I'm i'm just starting to learn about electronics. I think you should use the raspberry pie to control your LED panel because it is the most used pie device.
Thank you, man, nice practical review! I think that at this moment Banana Pro is better choice for my twilight projects. Rpi is good when you deal with something that does not require much computing power or when you deal with software that works better with Rpi. Connectivity is everything for me, so I took Banana Pro - separate eth controller, IR, SATA, WiFi, Backup power battery, standard LVDS,OTG, GPIO RAW mode (GPIO pins become fully compatible with Rpi) - I could only dream about it few months ago :) . Banana Pi is also good, but that bulky RCA connector... who needs this? . However, plastic cases are better for B Pi than for B Pro. I think making a wooden (bamboo) case for all these little useful monsters would be a nice project! Orange is rubbish, guys, go either for Rpi or Banana (Pro or Pi are both good choice)
Second comment here. *Bout that HDMI port*, they haven't figured out it's easier to keep the whole board 100 degrees f plus while it's being assembled. It would seem to me they are adding the port last, manually perhaps. This is most likely because they do not have the proper machining to put the port in on the conveyer. Because of their size, and the heat dissipating properties of general PCB material, it's often pretty hard to get just solder flow in a localized area, efficiently enough to ensure contact. (Ever remove an HDMI port? Put it in the oven or have a heat gun and patience if you don't want to destroy things.) If I was in their shoes, a burnt looking HDMI port is better than a non-working one considering I/O is typically done last in assembly. In China I/O parts are always being pre-fabricated just down the street (they are the more expensive parts in an operation like making an SBC, but the machines to make those are even more expensive than that, so why bother?). Alternatively, they could have a separate machine for that, and they are forced to remove the part off the conveyer allowing it to cool too much. No matter how you look at it, they need to get a handle on that. I can't imagine how many they reject a day. (Even though, one rejected is only roughly $4.50 USD give or take a dollar) The Chinese market is very versatile, a factory can close it's doors and open up 2-days later. Having gone from making dog bowls to making surgical plastics.
Hello, nice video. I think it really boils down to what you will be using the board for, don't you think? It's great that the Banana Pi pro runs Android, and some nice flavors of Linux, however it is probably not fast enough to do any heavy gaming on, which is what I use Android for sometimes. I like tha you can attach a Sata Hard drive to it for more storage, and the On/Off, reset buttons. If I were going to recommend one of these boards to anyone, it would definitely be the Raspberry Pi 2. There is just so much support, and if you want to use it for a really fast, small computer exclusively for KODI, the RP2 wins hands down. With its quad core processor, KODI runs really fast. I own several of the older Raspberry Pi boards and they worked well, but they needed to be overclocked. The RP2 runs OpenElec with a wireless dongle, with no messing around with any of the settings. Great for people who aren't quite the expert with this stuff as you are. I have the original Banana Pi, and I still have not found a distribution which runs KODI as flawlessly as the RP2 does, or the original RP. I will probably end up getting the Banana Pi PRO though, because I really like that wireless feature, and the other cool on board features.
I am fascinated that the Orange has a Li-ion battery buck boost / charging circuits. Here, looking at Ali Express, I see newer models, all very inexpensive, but can not tell which, if any have that circuitry. May I ask where you learned about this battery feature?
I'm thinking to buy an orange but I'm not sure.Do you think it is better to wait they solve these problems ? Maybe now is much more better a banana ...what do you think about? The orange web site is very bad , after 3 days the user group doesn't give the possibility to read some post and write something to get informations about it.....
ODROID C1 blows all these chips out the water for the same price! It even has a quad core 1GHz processor and can do 4K video decoding flawlessly. Great video though!
there is also the ODROID XU3 which has the best raw performance (on paper at least). There is also the cubbieboard 4 which is about the same as ODROID XU3 (a little less, again on paper) but has a few more bells and whistles and is cheaper. I haven't gotten to use them yet but I plan on buying and seeing how well they preform.
Thanks a lot for this comparison! Its needed as the fruit basket will fill ower soon. Now I am vaiting for the helfie board! A Carrot Tree for Rabbits!
How about the software? I find the Orange pi has a great Soc with a low price, but it seems that only a few people use it while others do their work on raspberry pi! Do these three computers have some difference while I using them?
GreatScott! Just ordered a banana dev board and an orange pi plus...how does the quad core orange (1.6Ghz) compare to a raspberry pi 2 for things like Kodi, EmulationStation etc?
I think I will be forrced to get the orange, even though it looks so cheaply made it can connect to a vga monitor so I can hook it to a cheaper monitor made for computers instead of having to buy a more expensive tv with hdmi port.
Hey Scott, what do you suggest. Im building a retropie gamingstation with an 16000mAh battery inside, and old screen and two old PS3 controllers to make a on the go gaming sytem. So what do you think? the Raspberry PI2, the Orange PI or the Banana pro?
Which one of these boards would be the easiest for a novice that's never done anything with electronics to build a handheld gaming device and what screen would you suggest.
It sounds like the Banana is Better, but i want to host a TS3 Server on win 10 and wanted to ASK you which Pi You Recommend! Can you tell me which has a Better performance?
I think the Raspberry should rate tops on this because of the community support. Banana is getting there. And I just don't trust the quality (or lack thereof) of the Orange. And if I really needed to connect to a 15-pin VGA cable I could just get a cheap HDMI-VGA adapter. No real need to put one on the board. They could save cost there and make those other 2 USB ports.. work..
I am still torn between the banana pro and raspberry pi 2... I like the extra's on the banana such as gigabit ethernet, wireless and IR control, but I do want to try that ambilight mod you did, for which I would need a raspberry :(
I told my dad about Raspberry pi, banana pi and orange pi..he thought it was some new ice cream thing :P I wanted to know why I would buy icecream thats $69.9USD on amazon :/
Basically a small computer. Like really small but powerful enough to play minecraft (probably) on max settings :3. It doesn't support* windows right now but it will be supported by windows 10 so then its gonna be like a computer that you use daily, just with less performance. :P
they're very cool, for me the best of 'em would be the orange. Idk I gotta watch synthetic benchmarks to decide, its pretty cheap too. I'd buy one to make my own router or as a tablet to carry to school
+wheelsnvolts Here's a link. www.aliexpress.com/item/Orange-Pi-PC-linux-and-android-mini-PC-Beyond-Raspberry-Pi-2/32448079125.html There are a number of Orange Pi devices. The one I ordered hasn't actually shipped yet, and none of the hundreds of orders before mine have reported any "feedback." So. . .this might be one of those "If it sounds too good to be true then it probably isn't." cases. Caveat Emptor.
@3.55 I see a WiFi antenna is it right? What's its technical name? Where could I find it? And, finally, with that "antenna", Orange Pi, became wifi capable out of the box? Thanks for the video and for infos
since the banana and the orange use the same power management chip is there any way to add a battery to the banana pi and take advantage of the battery management circuit inside the chip?
Hi @GreatScott!, In these days will you recommend Orange pi pc?? Actually I'm confused because of community. In specs wise I know Orange pi is better, don't know about the quality though. But I don't know the activeness of Orange pi community. Will you please tell me the current position of orange pi's community? As a novice should I go for Orange pi???
Thank's for the comparisons GreatScott! ; Love the integrated IR, SATA, WiFi, & GigE options on the competition also but I wish you would have given your personal preference in the end (you're too politically correct). Even though these versions might be ripping off RPi2's intellectual property, It does wake the folks at Raspberry Pi on what the people are clamoring for (integrated IR, SATA, WiFi, & GigE).
Hi. I'm very new to this and am interested in knowing if it's possible to build a DVR with 3 ATSC tuners (watch one live while possibly recording to different shows) using XBMC? If so which one would you recommend and can you add this to the request list? Thanks!
+Ḉąp̃tǻĭñ Ẽnçhilâdă Got one from MCM for $35 + $25 for a camera module, wifi dongle, and case bundle for, + $8 shipping. It is pretty nice although still kinda sucks for internet browsing.
Your video comparison is excellent! I don't know why nobody complimented you for that yet...
Cheers from Brazil!
andrednz Thanks ;-)
+GreatScott! i cannot wait for the pomegranate pi...
The Raspberry Pi has such a huge boost in value just because of the community support available. For someone like me whose not an expert, it's necessary!
***** Nice affiliate link and shameless promotion of it!
I sometimes like to use a flame thrower for soldering, it's just quicker.
I've been reading up on these 3 boards for the past couple of days, but I much prefer to watch comparisons over reading them, so thank you! You've made my day :)
Orange Pi Plus is a quad core.
thanks, great video. Got myself an Orange Pi ONE and im super happy with it. due to the very low price im not afraid to solder and experiment around with it, since if i break it, a new one costs less then trip to a KFC.
Apple Pi would cost 500$. :DDD
krmax44 XD
krmax44 mac mini mini or what? xD
DerBeutelBär xD mini mini
Take a look at how far the orange pi has come... I think you should do another video with the new "orange pi 2" or the mini version against the raspberry pi.
Very good presentation, well spoken, clear and concise and informative.
Use the Raspberry Pi 2.It offers great renewed features at a low price.Definitely would buy it for my projects!!!!
Paint it red to make it go faster!
I think it will be interesting to watch the progress of these systems over the next decade.
GreatScott. You saved me from making a terrible purchasing mistake. I decided to go with the raspberry pi instead. Thank you for your video! Amazing review.... Can you please tell us how can we use a battery for Banana Pro? Must one take care of charging offline?
I've been following you on TH-cam for a long amount of time and got fascinated by the awesome projects you present on each video .
I want to ask you on how did you gather all this knowledge on Electronics and programming since you're still this young ??? what is your advice on that to get me going on in the same path ??

I love this! how much does the banana pi cost?

Hey Scott, thank you for your videos!

in conclusion which one is better ? for every day using
GreatScott! This doesn't work with the orange pi mini btw at least 5v 2.5 amps
Review of the new Orange Pi 2? Just saw it mentioned on CNX Software blog. Would be interested to hear what you think of it.
I see there is now the Banana Pi M2 Quad core available, ill be buying one in a few weeks... if you are interested ill send you details of it...
Thanks for your review! It's indeed helpful and complete.
Second comment here.

the best part is the hdmi connector it looks like someone use a flame-thrower to reflow them ... OMG i cant stop laughing
Good video!
Orange Pi requires 5V from external AC/DC to supply USB 3 and 4.
X4YGMsl9 Thanks. I need to give that a try.

I want to make a super powerful laptop.

Would like to see a comparison with Hummingboard.
Thank you.

ok thanks, will you order 2dozen for me then?
***** They only come in 1 dozen packs, limit 1 per customer. I can't recall the company that had this offer, so I'll leave it up to you to google it.
LOL pity I missed the special offer :)
You can buy a HDMI to VGA adapter... They are like 10 bucks
Can you tell me if I connect it to a tv with HDMI and play a movie from where will the sound come from TV or Raspberry pi
Super informative. Thanks for making this.
Hey Scott, what do you suggest. Im building a retropie gamingstation with an 16000mAh battery inside, and old screen and two old PS3 controllers to make a on the go gaming sytem. So what do you think? the Raspberry PI2, the Orange PI or the Banana pro?

Great vid!, very professional and totally useful.
I'm considering to buy the banana pro, because I can turn it into a home NAS :-)
thank ,you for this video, for me, i think Raspberry PI still the best platforme
You should add which board fully supports (both hardware and software or source avaliblity ) open gl es support to your reviews

_AH Excellent presentation, as beginner of SBC and hobbies in general, looking forward to see more at the moment waiting for the new BananaPro in...
I'm REALLY curious about this new Orange Pi PC. Can't find out much about it but for $15 I couldn't help myself and got one put onto the slow boat.
+DancesWithRobots could you give more info on your purchase? ...

There are a number of Orange Pi devices. The one I ordered hasn't actually shipped yet, and none of the hundreds of orders before mine have reported any "feedback." So. . .this might be one of those "If it sounds too good to be true then it probably isn't." cases. Caveat Emptor.
Nice comparison
@3.55 I see a WiFi antenna is it right? What's its technical name? Where could I find it? And, finally, with that "antenna", Orange Pi, became wifi capable out of the box? Thanks for the video and for infos
I would love to see something about cluster computing with these boards.
since the banana and the orange use the same power management chip is there any way to add a battery to the banana pi and take advantage of the battery management circuit inside the chip?
Damn I want a LED matrix. Should I start with a smaller one, like say, 5x5? or should I make a LED cube instead?

Thanks!
I want to build a dedicated Arcade Machine running MAME, which software and hardware would you recommend ?
Will you be planning on comparing these boards to raspberry pi 3 just announced recently? I might actually get one if I can find one
+Power Max pimoroni has a pi 3 for $35, if that's what you mean.
+Ḉąp̃tǻĭñ Ẽnçhilâdă Got one from MCM for $35 + $25 for a camera module, wifi dongle, and case bundle for, + $8 shipping. It is pretty nice although still kinda sucks for internet browsing.
the orange seems perfect if you wish to do a custom portable device
what are the lcd screen you use for the raspberrypi and does that one work for the orange pi
