  • The first run on video. Master Airscrew 15x8, OS F plug, Omega 5%. I checked all fasteners after the run and all were tight. Unsure why there is an oil leak from the head. It is an pretty old engine...

I need one of these engines

This is the first Ive come across this nice engine. The shapes indicate that the parts are cnc'd from bar stock as opposed to diecast, making it a more time-intensive, low volume product. The internal design is extremely reminiscent of the classic British single cylinder ohv motorcycle engines with two separate cam gears running off the timing pinion, like a BSA or Royal Enfield. In which case, a bit of oil leaking is entirely in keeping with tradition 😊

Very nice, David. I am sure Jon will be able to advise on the oil leaks and how best to cure them. I am sure with a better fitting prop it will idle nicer. Most (if not all) Lasers idle below 2000rpm. Grahame

I often use the white outer tube from a Bic pen as a bushing when I have reamed a prop to 5/16 then I need it to be 1/4 inch again.

I would have expected more maximum rpm. The leaking concerns me a little bit. I found the diameter of the vent nipple on my Laser 100 rather small and used one with larger inner diameter. You can also drill it out a little bit or just remove it for the test run.

I have run it since that video also. I rotated the carb 180 degrees and now the HSN is on top. Massive fuel leak from the carb and it would not generate the same top RPM this run either. I am chocking this up to a tired old engine not at its peak. The last run I did not see any oil leakage from the push rod tubes or the head, just fuel from the carb.... Go figure.

May be caused by the microphone but I hear a rattling noise which I usually don't have on my Lasers. seems like I was lucky with the broken carb on my Laser 150. This one is ok so far and will go into a flying test stand for further run in. My Laser 70 and Laser 80 are unemployed atm. I may take them to the test stand for Tests with different glowplugs.

That is the mic on the Sony. My Nikon has better, truer sound.

Nice to see it up and running but it shouldnt leak oil like that.
The exhaust note sounds a bit flat and the rpm is low. There also seems to be oil blowing past the exhaust O rings so i think your exhaust might be clogged with castor oil. To test, just run it with no muffler and see if she's any faster. If its quicker then bin that old exhaust and i can sort out another for you. To prevent this happening again use a fully synthetic fuel once you have got through your current gallon.
The oil that appears to be blowing out of the exhuast O rings could also be blowing past the head. Its not uncommon for this to happen on the first run but it shouldnt happen after that once the parts have all settled together. If its still blowing out of the head/liner joint then the liner is likely damaged as i mentioned before and will need some work to flatten it off again.
Regarding the revs, did you tune it at all? i didnt see you make any adjustments.

At 2:42 I am adjusting the HSN and again at 3:19, so yes I was making HSN adjustments. I can blow freely through the exhaust so I do not think it is completely clogged.

Yea being able to blow through is not a reliable indicator. The way the baffle is set up there are two routes for the gas and one is likely blocked. Testing without the exhaust should show if this is the case.

It looks like it wants to pull your table over.
